Frank sat behind Hailey with the family attorney, ready to intervene. Hailey asked both men to let her speak first. She did not want wealth to become the only reason anyone listened. CeCe and Luke took seats beside her as student witnesses.
Candice entered wearing modest clothes unlike anything she had chosen before the scandal. The expensive labels were gone, replaced by a plain sweater that supported her new image as a working-class victim. She walked beside Dedra but never looked at her mother. Online sympathy had provided a new costume.
The interim administrator opened by calling the conflict a private disagreement between two students. He described the identity confusion as unfortunate but mutual, avoiding every occasion when school officials had refused Hailey’s evidence. His version erased institutional responsibility before testimony began.
Candice spoke first. She claimed classmates had mistaken her for the heiress after seeing a rented car and that fear trapped her inside the misunderstanding. Once the real Hailey began threatening her, Candice said, admitting the truth felt dangerous. Tears appeared precisely when she described Frank’s security team.
Hailey listened without interrupting. Candice never explained why fear required stealing a watch, slapping its owner, hosting a party in her castle, or claiming Frank as a father. The account survived only by treating deliberate acts as missing scenes. When questions began, Hailey supplied them.
She presented the Cartier registration, castle access log, restored family portrait, and police evidence receipt for the bracelet. The laboratory report showed that she had initiated evacuation rather than caused the reaction. Each document carried independent verification, denying the school another excuse to call it family influence.
Luke testified about the locker-room trap. He described the planted clothes, boys waiting with phones, and Candice arriving at the exact moment Hailey was exposed. He emphasized that he had defended Hailey before knowing she was wealthy. Candice’s attorney objected to his conclusions but could not change what he witnessed.
CeCe followed. Her voice trembled at first as she recounted the dodgeball attack and hallway bullying. When Candice smirked, CeCe straightened and described how cruelty spread because students and teachers believed the supposed heiress was untouchable. The room became quiet enough to hear pages turn.
The interim administrator attempted to redirect attention toward Hailey’s cafeteria retaliation and public accusations. Hailey admitted smearing food on Candice after being tripped and acknowledged that anger influenced some choices. Accountability, she said, required context without pretending retaliation was always ideal. Her honesty made Candice’s evasions more visible.
Then Gail was called. Everyone expected her to confirm the castle plan and phone messages collected by police. She walked to the witness chair without meeting Hailey’s eyes. Candice watched her with an unreadable expression.
Gail announced that stealing the bracelet had been her idea alone. She claimed Candice’s whisper concerned the birthday cake and that the messages about distractions referred to harmless school pranks. The reversal stunned the room. Even Dedra looked toward her daughter with suspicion.
Hailey asked why Gail had changed the statement given to police. Gail said panic made her blame someone else and that reflection had restored the truth. Her answers sounded memorized. Without audio of Candice’s instruction, the conservation footage proved the planting but not who ordered it.
The family attorney requested time to authenticate every message, but the interim administrator seized the uncertainty. He announced that the evidence established Gail’s misconduct while remaining inconclusive regarding Candice’s role in the jewelry incident. A school-board member objected, but he continued.
Candice lowered her head to conceal a smile. Someone had persuaded Gail that protecting her offered a safer future than testifying. Hailey did not know whether the pressure involved threats, promises, or online harassment. She knew only that Candice had found another person willing to carry her consequences.
The administrator proposed temporary counseling for Candice and detention for Hailey’s “mutual participation” in campus conflict. Outrage swept through the audience. CeCe called the decision punishment for surviving bullying, while Luke demanded an independent review.
Frank rose at last. His patience had ended. He stated that the Kaplan Foundation would freeze all unrestricted donations to Western High until an external investigation examined the administration’s handling of violence, stolen property, and identity fraud. The announcement struck the room harder than any shouted threat.
The interim administrator accused Frank of using money to overturn discipline. Frank replied that continuing to fund negligence would be the true abuse. Existing student scholarships and direct program grants would remain protected, but the administration would no longer control Kaplan funds without oversight.
Candice saw an opportunity and addressed the students. She claimed Hailey had brought her billionaire father to punish the entire school because one hearing did not end her way. Fear moved through those who depended on arts, science, and athletic programs. Facts became secondary to the word *freeze*.
