Married at First Sight – Episode 11

Summer woke to warmth and the unfamiliar rhythm of another person breathing beside her. Sometime during the night, the pillow barrier had collapsed onto the floor. Christian’s arm circled her waist, and her cheek rested against his chest as though they had shared a bed for years instead of hours.

She froze, afraid that any movement would wake him. Without the sharp control he wore in public, Christian looked younger and less guarded. Summer told herself she was merely surprised, but the steady beat beneath her palm made leaving his embrace strangely difficult.

Christian opened his eyes. For one suspended moment, neither acknowledged their position. Then he wished her good morning with infuriating calm and asked whether she always broke contractual boundaries in her sleep. Summer shoved away, gathering the blanket around herself while accusing him of crossing first. Her indignation would have sounded more convincing if she had not already begun to miss his warmth.

He pointed out that he had fallen asleep on his side and awakened near the center, suggesting the evidence was inconclusive. The teasing eased her embarrassment, but the imprint of his arm remained around her waist. Their rules had survived the night in principle and failed completely in practice.

In the kitchen, Summer attempted breakfast to repay him for the interview. Christian’s refrigerator contained expensive ingredients and almost no ordinary food. She found eggs, bread, and coffee, then discovered that the elegant stove possessed more settings than she knew how to operate.

Christian entered as smoke curled from the pan. Instead of calling staff, he loosened his cuffs and helped. He claimed competence with breakfast, though his first attempt at flipping an omelet landed half of it on the counter. Summer laughed so hard that the tension from the bedroom finally broke.

They ate imperfect eggs beside the windows while morning spread across the city. Christian asked about the article, and Summer explained that Penny had taken control of the footage. He offered to make publication approval conditional on Summer receiving the byline. She refused at first, fearing special treatment, but he argued that insisting on accurate credit was not favoritism.

Summer reluctantly accepted the distinction. She sent Penny a formal message documenting her role in securing and conducting the interview. Within minutes, Penny replied that editorial decisions belonged to management. Christian watched Summer’s expression change and reached for his phone.

She stopped him. This was a fight she needed to handle herself, not because she rejected partnership but because her career had to stand on more than her husband’s power. Christian respected the boundary, though he advised her to keep written records. His restraint made the offer of help feel safer.

At the office, excitement over the interview had become chaos. Advertising clients called, website traffic surged from the preview announcement, and senior editors suddenly treated Summer as valuable. Penny could not erase her contribution without provoking questions from people above her. Coworkers who had avoided Summer during the ultimatum now offered congratulations, proving how quickly success could make private courage appear obvious to everyone else.

Jess cornered Summer near the copy room and noticed she wore the same blouse as yesterday beneath a different jacket. Summer claimed she had slept at a friend’s home. Jess asked whether that friend happened to own Norton Enterprises, and Summer nearly dropped her coffee.

Before Jess could press further, reception announced a visitor. Vincent entered carrying a bouquet and the wounded expression he once used whenever he wanted forgiveness without accepting blame. The office grew quiet as he approached Summer’s desk. She felt no longing, only the old exhaustion of being expected to manage his emotions.

Vincent said they needed to talk privately. Summer refused. He placed the flowers before her and claimed Nancy had exaggerated the café confrontation, as though the cheating itself were a misunderstanding created by someone else. He missed the woman Summer used to be—the one who always believed his explanations. The bouquet was made of her former favorites, a calculated reminder that he still knew details about her life even after proving he had never valued them.

Summer reminded him that he had chosen Nancy and denied owing her anything. There was nothing left to discuss. Vincent lowered his voice and warned that Nancy’s family could damage Summer’s career. He presented his warning as concern, but the satisfaction in his eyes revealed that he expected fear to reopen the door.

Penny emerged from her office and greeted Vincent with unexpected warmth. Summer understood then that the pressure surrounding her was more coordinated than she realized. Penny invited him inside, claiming they could discuss a legal matter related to the publication. Vincent had not come merely to apologize.

Jess whispered that Vincent was probably helping Penny find grounds to fire her. Summer’s stomach tightened. The interview had protected her for one day, but Penny now had a newly qualified lawyer eager to punish the woman who demanded repayment. Their shared resentment could turn ordinary paperwork into a weapon.

Summer photographed the flowers and the time of Vincent’s visit, following Christian’s advice to document everything. As she did, a message arrived from him asking whether breakfast had earned a second attempt tomorrow. The contrast between Vincent’s manipulation and Christian’s uncomplicated invitation steadied her.

Penny’s office door opened. Vincent stepped out holding a file marked CONFIDENTIAL and looked directly at Summer. Penny announced that an internal investigation had been opened into how Summer obtained Christian Norton’s private contact information—and until she explained it, her job was officially suspended.
