How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 22

Chris took Harper to the apartment above his nightclub while firefighters secured the house. The rooms were spare and immaculate, revealing almost nothing about the man who owned them. Even here, he lived as though he might leave without warning.

Harper sat at the kitchen island wrapped in his coat. “Tell me about Evan Mercer.” She would not accept another promise that the truth could wait.

Chris poured water but left his own glass untouched. “Evan ran security for Mark and me eight years ago. He was also feeding information to federal investigators.”

Their Boston property had been used by a business partner named Victor Sloane to move drugs through private events. When Evan uncovered the operation, Mark agreed to turn over the records.

“The night before they were supposed to meet the investigators, the warehouse caught fire,” Chris continued. “It wasn’t an accident.”

Harper listened without interrupting. She could see each decision still living inside him, preserved by guilt.

“Mark was unconscious near the east exit. Evan was trapped in an office on the other side.” Chris’s fingers tightened around the counter. “I carried your father out.”

He had promised Evan he would return. Before he could, the roof collapsed and buried the office in flames. No body was recovered, but no one could have survived.

“Saving my father wasn’t a mistake,” Harper said quietly.

“Leaving Evan was.” Chris had repeated that judgment for eight years, and nothing she said could loosen it in a single night.

Mark and Chris helped convict two of Sloane’s men, but Sloane disappeared before charges reached him. The threatening messages began again when rumors surfaced that evidence from the old case still existed.

“And you thought it was better if I knew none of this?” Harper asked.

“I thought ignorance kept you outside it.” Chris finally met her eyes. “I was wrong.”

His security chief arrived with footage recovered from a camera across Harper’s street. The intruder’s face was partially hidden, but one frame captured the blue-and-gold Yale ring.

Harper recognized him before the image sharpened. “Cole Mercer.” He sat two rows behind her in an ethics seminar and had attended the party without ever speaking to her.

Chris searched the name. Cole was Evan’s son, raised by relatives after the Boston fire. His enrollment at Yale had begun the same semester Harper transferred.

The coincidence felt engineered. Cole had entered her life before Chris moved into the house and before Bryan sent his threat. He had been waiting for the right moment to make old guilt visible.

A message appeared on Harper’s phone from an unknown number: *Ask your father which man he really left inside.* Attached was a photograph of Evan Mercer alive—dated three months after the warehouse fire.
