Luke traced Renee’s accounts to payments from Walter spanning almost twenty years. She had not merely served the Smith household; she had watched Raina for the man who switched the infants. Every kindness now carried the possibility of surveillance.
Theo urged Raina not to rewrite every childhood memory as false. A compromised person could still have felt genuine affection. Raina appreciated the nuance, though uncertainty remained its own form of grief.
Joshua located Renee at a small house outside Brookfield. Police surrounded the property while Raina waited at a command point with her brothers. She had agreed not to approach until the scene was secure, a choice rather than an order.
Renee surrendered without resistance. Inside, officers found boxes of photographs documenting Raina’s life from infancy through adulthood. Some were ordinary family images; others had been taken secretly at school, hospitals, and the Smith mansion.
During questioning, Renee admitted Walter hired her to ensure Raina remained with the Smiths and never recovered memories of the hospital switch. She had altered records, intercepted letters from the Lincolns, and reported every attempt Raina made to investigate her scar.
She denied ordering Theo’s death. The messages to Secretary Lee were designed to make him appear medically unstable, not kill him. Weston had exaggerated the plan after receiving access through Walter.
Raina asked why Renee stayed after Walter disappeared. The older woman’s composure finally cracked. She said she had grown to love the child she was paid to monitor, but fear and money kept her silent.
“Love that requires my ignorance is not protection,” Raina replied. The sentence applied to Renee, the Smiths, and even the Lincolns. Everyone in the room understood it.
Renee revealed one final secret. Walter did not choose the Smith infant randomly. Coco’s biological mother had once been engaged to Walter before marrying Jeffrey, and Walter believed Coco was the child he should have had.
Mrs. Smith denied any affair. She explained that Walter’s obsession ended long before her marriage, but he continued claiming ownership over the life she built without him. Switching the infants let him punish the Lincolns while placing Coco inside their fortune.
The revelation explained Walter’s long protection of Coco and his resentment when she treated him as a tool. It also threatened Coco’s certainty about her biological father, though no evidence challenged Jeffrey’s paternity.
DNA testing confirmed Jeffrey was Coco’s father. Walter’s fantasy had driven the crime, not hidden parentage. Mrs. Smith wept with relief and horror at how one man’s obsession had shaped both daughters.
Renee surrendered the intercepted letters. For years, Mrs. Lincoln had written to hospitals, agencies, and unknown families describing the daughter she sought. One letter had been addressed directly to Raina after a possible lead placed her near the Smiths.
Raina read the unopened page. Her biological mother had written that she did not know Raina’s name or face, only that a room waited for her and five brothers asked about her every birthday. The words reached across fifteen stolen years.
She brought the letter to the Lincoln estate. Her brothers gathered quietly as she read it aloud, none attempting to hide their tears. The family could not recover the past, but they could finally share it honestly.
Raina told them she was ready to move into the real family home, not as an heiress under protection but as an adult with her own work and choices. The brothers agreed before she finished listing conditions.
