Evelyn remained on the porch while the championship ticket trembled in her hand. No one knew who had sent it, but the timing made the invitation feel less like kindness than surveillance. Wayne took the note and recognized the block lettering from signs Alyssa had carried at football games.
Lindsay did not want to believe Alyssa had reached into Wayne’s family crisis. The school investigation had already removed her from cheerleading activities, yet punishment had apparently sharpened her need for control rather than ending it.
Jamie asked who Alyssa was. When Lindsay explained the dare, the videos, and the false cheating accusation, he laughed without humor. Wayne’s life sounded as if it had been arranged for public entertainment long before Jamie arrived.
Evelyn offered to leave Maple Hill. If her presence threatened Wayne’s focus or Jamie’s stability, she would wait elsewhere until they invited contact. Wayne saw the familiar instinct to disappear whenever love became complicated.
He asked her to stay for the game. The invitation did not grant forgiveness, but it refused another silent separation. Jamie said nothing, though he did not object.
Mike arranged for Evelyn and Jamie to sit with the Johnson family rather than in the crowded student section. He also notified school security about the anonymous ticket. The precautions made Lindsay wonder what Alyssa hoped to accomplish.
At school, rumors about Wayne’s secret brother spread before lunch. Someone had posted the childhood photograph from the blue box, even though only the family possessed copies. Lindsay checked her sent messages and discovered that the file she shared with Jamie had been accessed from an unknown device.
Jamie denied posting it. His anger sounded genuine, but students were already searching his name and exposing details about Mara’s death. The reunion he had not chosen was becoming another spectacle.
Wayne wanted to confront Alyssa. Lindsay persuaded him to remain at practice while she brought the evidence to the principal. He could support Jamie without giving the anonymous account another recording of him losing control.
The principal traced the upload to a school tablet checked out under Phoebe’s name. Phoebe swore she had never borrowed it. Security footage showed a hooded student taking the device from the media room, but the face remained hidden.
Alyssa denied involvement and pointed out that her access to school equipment had been suspended. For once, the evidence did not fit her usual direct style. Lindsay began to suspect someone was imitating Alyssa to keep attention away from themselves.
Jeremy examined the photograph’s metadata. The uploaded image had not come from Lindsay’s phone; it had been photographed from Julie’s laptop screen on the night Jamie arrived. Everyone in the Johnson house became a possible source.
Mike reviewed the security footage again. Behind Evelyn’s car, another vehicle had stopped briefly across the street. The license plate belonged to Jean, one of Alyssa’s closest cheerleading friends.
Lindsay found Jean after school and asked why she had followed Evelyn. Jean’s confidence collapsed almost immediately. Alyssa had promised to restore her place on the squad if she gathered information that could break Lindsay and Wayne apart.
Jean admitted photographing the laptop through the kitchen window. She also sent the ticket to Evelyn, hoping an emotional confrontation before the championship would destroy Wayne’s performance. Alyssa had planned everything through private messages.
The confession could end Alyssa’s campaign, but Jean begged Lindsay not to report her. Losing cheerleading and facing suspension could cost her college applications. Lindsay understood the terror of having one mistake define an entire future.
She offered Jean a choice: tell the principal the truth herself and accept the consequences, or Lindsay would submit the evidence without her cooperation. Mercy did not require silence, and accountability did not require cruelty.
Jean agreed to confess. As Lindsay left, her phone displayed a message from Wayne: Jamie had vanished from the Johnson house, leaving the completed compass and a note that read, I won’t ruin your championship too.
