The Vanguard facility collapsed into the sea minutes after the final evacuation. Rescue teams accounted for investors, employees, and Connor’s operatives. Elias Vale was not among the living or the dead.
Voss surrendered to international authorities. He provided locations of the twelve depots and admitted his role in the kidnappings, attacks, and Aegis theft. Cooperation would not erase his crimes.
Richard recovered in a private hospital room with Connor beside him. He apologized for ordering his son to sacrifice him. Connor admitted he might have given the same order once.
They had both mistaken self-destruction for love. Richard promised to stop deciding which losses Connor should survive. Connor promised to stop treating every rescue as his burden alone.
Scarlett brought Summer into the room after doctors approved the visit. She climbed carefully onto Richard’s bed and replayed his recorded promise about dangerous truths. Richard confirmed that he intended to keep it.
Summer then replayed Connor’s promise to come home. He had returned again, though his torn clothes made her declare that he needed a safer job. No one in the room disagreed.
Dominion’s board met under the emergency trustee. Connor proposed dissolving all founder-level control keys and placing strategic systems under independent civilian oversight. The change would prevent another Vale or Cross from seizing the company.
Richard made his transferred voting rights permanent. Reed wealth would remain an investor without governing weapons or defense policy. The decision ended a power his family had protected for decades.
Several directors resigned rather than accept oversight. The remaining board approved Connor’s reforms by one vote. Dominion survived, smaller and less powerful than before.
Asterion received control of all civilian Aegis applications. Scarlett created an international public-benefit trust to govern Constellation. Neither marriage nor inheritance could transfer that authority to one person.
Connor worried that she was giving away the advantage her mother had protected. Scarlett answered that Evelyn had built Constellation precisely so protection could never become private property. Keeping it public completed her work.
Investigators cleared Dominion of the drone attack but continued examining Connor’s historical missions. He accepted restrictions on travel and command while the cases proceeded. Accountability did not end because Vale had escaped.
Public opinion remained divided. Some called Connor a criminal, others a reformer, and many considered him both. He stopped measuring his worth through strangers’ fear.
At home, he helped Summer build a cardboard constellation for school. She assigned a star to every person who had protected the family. Even Stephen received a small one after Scarlett allowed it.
Lily added herself twice because of her injured shoulder. Richard objected until Summer gave him two stars for surviving a kidnapping. Their argument filled the house with ordinary noise.
Scarlett found Connor watching them from the doorway. He said he had spent years building systems to control danger and never imagined safety could look like this. She reminded him that safety required daily choices, not one final victory.
He asked whether their forced marriage had become real somewhere between the first rescue and the last. Scarlett kissed him and said it became real every time he stayed. Summer complained about embarrassing adults without looking up from her stars.
Cypher interrupted with a priority alert. Vanguard Arc had lost every license and entered international receivership, but one server transmitted after the facility’s destruction. The signal used Evelyn Hayes’s personal research code.
The transmission led to an underground laboratory purchased twelve years earlier through a foundation that officially never existed. Security footage showed Vale entering with a case taken from the destroyed archive.
He opened the laboratory using Evelyn’s voiceprint. A screen played a recording dated six months after her official death, and Scarlett’s mother looked directly into the camera. “If Connor Reed is watching this,” she said, “then Elias found me again.”
