The withdrawn offer turned Alaina’s confession into another moment threatened by money. She looked at Noah across the table, and old suspicion moved between them before either spoke.
“It wasn’t me,” he said.
Alaina believed him. The certainty surprised them both.
She placed the call on speaker and asked the employer to identify the investor. The executive refused, citing confidential negotiations.
Noah offered legal help only after she requested it. Together, they reviewed the limited facts without assuming a motive.
Aaron traced the pressure to a fund seeking exclusive rights to Alaina’s completed series. Blocking her Los Angeles deal was a bargaining tactic, not a personal attack.
The fund expected financial vulnerability to force her cooperation. It did not know her current series had already generated enough revenue to give her leverage.
Alaina instructed her attorney to reject the rights offer and notify the Los Angeles employer of the interference.
Noah watched her manage the crisis. She no longer needed him to rescue her, and loving her no longer required pretending otherwise.
The employer reinstated the offer after its board learned the truth. It also strengthened the contract against outside rights pressure.
Alaina accepted. Her career had survived because she defended it with evidence, counsel, and the confidence she once reserved for helping others.
Later, she and Noah walked through the neighborhood where her new office would open. The future felt close enough to discuss without turning it into a promise.
“We said the words,” Noah observed. “What do we do with them?”
“We live like they’re true.”
For Alaina, that meant honesty before sacrifice. For Noah, it meant partnership without possession.
He stopped beneath a streetlight. “I don’t want our old relationship back.”
The statement startled her until he continued. “I want one where we know how to stay.”
Alaina took his hand. “Then we start here.”
They kissed without cameras dictating its meaning. This time, neither pulled away from fear.
When Noah returned home, Nora waited with the engagement ring Alaina had once thrown away. “If you ask her again,” she said, “make sure the choice is hers.”
