The Call Boy I Met in Paris – Episode 7

The clerk’s signature dried beneath the official seal while Sophie stared at the marriage certificate in her hands. Less than a day earlier, Justin had been a stranger in her hotel bed; now the government recognized him as her husband. The speed of it should have terrified her, but the deadline in her mother’s will had left no space for hesitation.

Justin watched her study the document as though it were both a shield and an architectural plan that might collapse if she missed one detail. He could have revealed his identity at any point. Instead, intrigue—and the memory of the woman who had once helped him without conditions—had carried him all the way through the ceremony.

Sophie drew a breath and shifted into the businesslike tone that made the arrangement feel safer. “Okay, husband. From now on, I pay you ten thousand dollars a month for as long as we’re married.” She had chosen a sum she believed no struggling escort could refuse.

Ten thousand a month was insignificant beside Justin’s fortune, but he nodded solemnly. Correcting her now would mean explaining his hotels, his development company, and the connection between them that stretched back seven years. He was not yet ready to end the strange honesty her mistake allowed.

Sophie extended her hand. “It was a pleasure doing business with you.” Beneath the formality lay visible relief: she had met the requirement, denied Derek the satisfaction of seeing her crawl back, and preserved her chance to claim the firm.

Justin took her hand and held it a fraction longer than a business agreement required. “You got it, boss,” he said. Then his eyes warmed with mischief. “Or should I say wife?”

“Boss wife,” Sophie corrected, although the title drew an unwilling smile from her. Their marriage might exist only on paper, yet the memory of their night together made the word wife feel more intimate than she wanted to admit.

Justin opened the door for her with exaggerated ceremony. “Let the show begin.” He thought he was indulging an unexpected adventure, but Sophie heard the truth beneath the joke. Her family would not accept defeat quietly.

They traveled to the Swift home with the certificate safely inside Sophie’s bag. The closer she came, the more old tension gathered in her shoulders. This was the house where every choice she made became evidence against her, and where Stella’s betrayals were forgiven while Sophie’s resistance was treated as a crime.

Justin remained beside her when she entered. Tony, Stella, and Derek were already waiting, arranged like a tribunal. Their expressions revealed that they expected an apology and had prepared themselves to enjoy it.

“Nice of you to finally come home,” Tony said. There was no concern in his greeting, only anger that she had ignored his order. His gaze moved suspiciously to the unknown man at her side.

Stella leaned toward Derek with a smug smile. “If I were you, I’d be begging Derek to take me back,” she told Sophie. Her confidence rested on the assumption that the approaching birthday had left her sister no alternative.

“Derek probably doesn’t even want to see her anymore,” someone added. “That’s why she came crawling back here.” Derek said nothing, allowing the others to perform his outrage while he waited for Sophie to surrender.

Sophie looked from her unfaithful fiancé to the sister who had slept with him. “That’s funny coming from two home-wreckers,” she said. The accusation shattered Stella’s satisfied expression.

“How dare you!” Stella cried, instantly turning toward their father. “Tony, do you hear your daughter?” Tony muttered that Sophie was a rude brat, but Sophie no longer flinched beneath the familiar insult.

“I’m not here to listen to you guys talk down to me,” she said. Her hand slipped into her bag, and the room quieted as she withdrew the official paper. “I’m here to show you my marriage certificate.”

For several seconds, no one understood. Then Tony snatched the document and scanned the signatures, his face draining of color. The requirement he had intended to use against Sophie had been satisfied without Derek, without his approval, and without any opportunity for him to interfere.

“In about three days, I will be taking over my late mother’s architecture firm,” Sophie announced. Pride steadied her voice as she stood beside the man her family believed was a stranger. “And you guys can’t do anything about it.”

Derek stared at the certificate while Stella tried to read over Tony’s shoulder. Their carefully arranged future had disappeared in a single morning. Worse, Sophie no longer looked frightened of them.

Tony’s gaze stopped on the groom’s signature, and his shock sharpened into fury. He lifted the certificate and glared at the composed man standing beside his daughter. “Who the fuck is Justin Lake?” he demanded, unaware that the answer would be far more dangerous to his plans than the marriage itself.
