The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 11
Lindsay changed outfits three times before Wayne knocked on her bedroom door. She finally chose a short dress that made her feel bolder than she was, then checked every angle in the mirror. Tonight had to produce a boyfriend—or at least the beginning of one.
When she stepped into the hallway, Wayne fell silent. His gaze traveled over her before returning quickly to her face, and the reaction sent a spark of confidence through her. She asked what he thought of the outfit and whether his friends would like it.
The mention of his friends spoiled Wayne’s first answer. “Yeah,” he managed, though he had been thinking less about them than about how difficult it would be to spend the evening watching other boys approach her. Lindsay smiled, satisfied, and announced that they should leave.
During the drive, she rehearsed ways to seem charming rather than desperate. Wayne remained quieter than usual. Each time Lindsay asked about his friends, his responses grew shorter, but she mistook his jealousy for concentration.
Music and laughter spilled from the house when they arrived. Wayne’s friend Felix welcomed him with an easy embrace, then looked Lindsay over with open interest. “What’s up, cutie with the glasses?” he asked.
Lindsay’s nerves eased. Wayne’s social circle contained exactly the kind of confident, attractive boys she had hoped to meet. If one of them agreed to date her, Alyssa’s impossible dare might end tonight.
She reminded herself that she did not need true love before morning. She needed a beginning convincing enough to grow into a relationship before the deadline. Most importantly, she needed to avoid becoming the naked punch line Alyssa wanted.
Felix suggested a game, and the group enthusiastically agreed. Lindsay was about to follow when familiar laughter cut through the room. Alyssa had arrived with her friends, dressed for attention and already looking for a target.
She stared at Lindsay’s outfit and announced that no one would ever find a boyfriend wearing it. According to Alyssa, Lindsay looked ready for a church bake sale rather than a party. She advised Lindsay to practice her best angles because cameras would cover every moment of her eventual streak across campus.
Lindsay refused to shrink. She pretended not to recognize Alyssa without pasta on her head, drawing laughter from the people around them. Then she suggested Alyssa worry less about her dress and more about the bird’s nest replacing her hairstyle.
Wayne heard the word streak and turned toward Lindsay. Alyssa’s insults no longer mattered; he wanted to know what wager had made Lindsay so determined to find a boyfriend. “What streak is she talking about?” he asked.
Lindsay’s stomach tightened. If Wayne learned the truth, he might realize she had been treating him and his friends like tools in her escape plan. Worse, he might pity her. She dismissed it as nothing and looked for any interruption.
Felix provided one by producing bottles stolen from his father’s liquor cabinet. He announced a game of Spin the Bottle: Truth or Dare, and the party shifted toward the living room with renewed excitement. Alyssa smiled as though the game had been arranged specifically for her.
Everyone settled into a circle. Lindsay took a place near Wayne, hoping his presence would shield her from the worst attention. Alyssa sat opposite them, where she could watch every reaction.
The first spins produced embarrassing confessions and reckless dares. With each turn, Lindsay relaxed enough to laugh. Wayne remained close, his knee occasionally brushing hers, and those small contacts distracted her from the boys she was supposedly there to meet.
Alyssa noticed. She also noticed the way Wayne watched Lindsay whenever Lindsay looked elsewhere. What had begun as a plan to claim the new star was becoming something far more personal: she wanted to prove that Wayne could never choose the girl Alyssa despised.
The bottle spun again, catching the room’s light in flashing arcs. It slowed past Alyssa, passed Wayne, and pointed directly at Lindsay. Conversation died as every face turned toward her.
Lindsay’s new confidence threatened to collapse. Alyssa leaned forward with delighted anticipation while Wayne studied her with concern. When the choice came—truth or dare—Lindsay selected what seemed safer, unaware that the truth Alyssa wanted would expose the one romantic secret she had guarded all her life.
