Gail denied recognizing the note, but her voice lacked conviction. Hailey did not summon Adam or threaten police. She simply reminded Gail of the castle, where Candice had called her unstable the moment the hidden camera exposed the bracelet. Loyalty had never protected her.
“You don’t understand,” Gail whispered. Candice possessed a video from Hailey’s first morning showing the knife at the bike rack and Gail restraining her. If released, the footage could support charges far more serious than bullying. Candice had promised to send it to police and make Gail responsible for every violent act.
Hailey remembered the flash of metal and the crowd turning away. Gail had participated willingly, and fear did not erase that choice. Still, Candice was exploiting genuine guilt to demand new harm. Accountability and coercion could exist at the same time.
Gail admitted stealing the student assistant’s key, printing the draft, and placing it inside CeCe’s locker. Candice had designed the plan and selected CeCe because destroying her scholarship prospects would hurt Hailey most. The confession emerged between tears and repeated claims that Gail saw no escape.
Hailey told her there was one: stop lying and accept consequences for what she had actually done. Candice’s power depended on everyone believing confession was more dangerous than obedience. Gail could break that pattern, though truth would not guarantee comfort.
Luke joined them after Gail agreed to speak with Dr. Mercer. He suggested recording an immediate statement before Candice learned of the decision. Hailey insisted that Gail have a parent and attorney present so no one could later claim coercion by the Kaplan family. They arranged the meeting through the investigator.
Dr. Mercer collected Gail’s phone using a forensic tool that preserved deleted messages. Cloud backups restored conversations predating the castle party, including Candice’s instructions to isolate Hailey, target CeCe during dodgeball, and prepare the locker-room ambush. The pattern was broader than any single incident.
One message referred to the science draft by file name and ordered Gail to place it beneath CeCe’s chemistry notebook. Another promised legal protection if the castle theft returned to police. Candice’s written words supplied the connection the silent conservation footage could not.
Gail signed a new statement acknowledging her false testimony at the earlier hearing. She did not ask Hailey for forgiveness. Instead, she requested that the knife video be submitted with the full context rather than released through Candice’s edit. Hailey agreed that evidence should tell the whole truth, even when it harmed them both.
The next morning, CeCe returned to class. Dr. Mercer’s recommendation and the printer evidence forced the school to withdraw the cheating allegation pending final dismissal. Students applauded when she entered, but CeCe appeared uncomfortable receiving praise from people who had believed the accusation hours earlier. Their approval felt almost as unstable as their suspicion.
Mr. Dalton restored every missed assignment and wrote a formal letter confirming the document could not have aided the examination. He also offered to contact scholarship committees if the allegation leaked. CeCe thanked him, then sat beside Hailey with quiet relief.
Gail approached during lunch. She apologized for the locker plot and admitted fear had made her keep harming easier targets. CeCe listened without softening. She said being threatened explained why Gail was afraid, not why she had chosen to destroy another student’s future.
“I don’t forgive you,” CeCe said. “Not yet.” Gail accepted the answer and left without defending herself. Hailey admired both girls for allowing consequence to exist without turning it into permanent dehumanization. Repair, if it came, would require time.
Dr. Mercer called Hailey, Luke, and CeCe to the conference room after school. The recovered messages contained references to someone identified only as “the office.” Candice repeatedly assured Gail that discipline reports would support their version and relevant video would not survive.
Metadata linked the messages to dates when the interim administrator had accessed Hailey’s official enrollment file. He had reviewed her legal name, emergency contacts, and Frank Kaplan’s verified signature hours after the assembly. From that point forward, he could not plausibly claim ignorance about her identity.
Despite knowing the truth, he had maintained Hailey’s detention, described Candice as the donor’s daughter, and threatened suspension for further claims. His office then deleted surveillance footage and altered reports to label Hailey the aggressor. Protecting the school’s donation had become a deliberate cover-up.
Dr. Mercer cautioned that the evidence did not yet prove he coordinated directly with Candice. It proved that his misconduct created the protection she exploited. Whether money, pride, or fear motivated him, an adult had chosen institutional reputation over student safety.
Hailey felt anger settle into something colder than outrage. Candice’s cruelty had always been personal, but the administrator had possessed a duty to investigate. He saw the documents, understood the truth, and punished her anyway because admitting error threatened his position.
The school board scheduled an emergency session for the following morning. Dr. Mercer would present the recovered messages, deletion logs, altered reports, and Gail’s corrected statement. Candice would face a new disciplinary review, while the interim administrator would answer for his own actions.
As Hailey studied the report, one attached log caught her attention. The administrator had opened her verified enrollment file before ordering her to apologize to Candice at the assembly. He had not merely failed to recognize the true heiress. He had known exactly who she was when he tried to silence her.
