The news spread through the Blood Moon Packhouse faster than wildfire.
Alexander Kane was coming.
Not a representative.
Not a Beta.
Not an envoy.
The Alpha of Nightwind himself.
The strongest Alpha in the country.
The man whose name alone could silence a room full of wolves.
Inside his office, Jackson stared at the RSVP card as though it might suddenly reveal its secrets.
“Alexander Kane is coming.”
Even saying it aloud felt strange.
Across from him, Beta Luke struggled to hide his excitement.
“I still can’t believe it.”
Jackson tossed the invitation onto his desk.
“Neither can I.”
The room fell silent.
For years, Blood Moon and Nightwind had operated in different circles.
There had never been an alliance.
Never been a friendship.
Never even much communication.
So why now?
Jackson folded his arms.
“I only invited him out of courtesy.”
Luke nodded.
Everyone did.
Sending invitations to powerful Alphas was common political practice.
Nobody expected them to actually show up.
Especially not Alexander Kane.
“We don’t even know each other.”
Jackson frowned.
“What exactly does he want?”
Luke leaned forward.
“Maybe nothing.”
Jackson laughed.
“No one travels hundreds of miles for nothing.”
“Maybe he respects us.”
The answer made Jackson pause.
Luke seized the opportunity.
“Think about it.”
His eyes brightened.
“Nightwind is the biggest pack right now.”
Jackson nodded.
That much was true.
Nightwind dominated almost every territory.
Its warriors were stronger.
Its resources were larger.
Its influence reached across the country.
But Blood Moon had been growing.
Fast.
Very fast.
Luke continued.
“Everyone knows Blood Moon is expanding.”
“We’ve doubled our territory in five years.”
“We’ve increased our warriors.”
“We’ve strengthened trade.”
A grin spread across his face.
“Maybe Alexander finally noticed.”
Jackson’s ego immediately liked that explanation.
The strongest Alpha in America recognizing Blood Moon’s rise?
That sounded much better than a hidden agenda.
“You think he’s worried?”
Luke shrugged.
“Maybe.”
The possibility made Jackson smile.
A dangerous smile.
“If Nightwind sees us as competition…”
He leaned back in his chair.
“Then we’re doing something right.”
For several moments, neither man spoke.
The atmosphere became lighter.
Until Luke made the mistake of laughing.
A quiet chuckle.
Jackson immediately narrowed his eyes.
“What?”
“Nothing, Alpha.”
“What?”
Luke raised his hands defensively.
“I just think it’s funny.”
“Funny?”
“Watching you panic.”
Jackson grabbed a pen from his desk and threw it at him.
Luke dodged easily.
“Very funny.”
The Beta’s grin widened.
That grin lasted exactly three seconds.
Because Jackson suddenly remembered something.
And smiled.
A much more dangerous smile.
Luke instantly regretted everything.
“Oh no.”
“Oh yes.”
Jackson stood.
“You seem so enthusiastic about the party.”
“Alpha…”
“Why don’t you handle all the preparations?”
Luke froze.
“All of them?”
“Every single one.”
The Beta looked horrified.
“From beginning to end?”
Jackson nodded.
“From beginning to end.”
“That’s cruel.”
Jackson sat back down.
“That’s leadership.”
Luke groaned dramatically.
Then another realization struck him.
“Wait.”
His face fell.
“The party is this weekend.”
“Correct.”
“My birthday is this weekend.”
Jackson’s expression remained perfectly calm.
Luke stared.
“You promised me time off.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Alpha!”
“No.”
Luke looked as though he might cry.
“I turn eighteen.”
“No.”
“I’ve waited my entire life for my wolf.”
“No.”
“You’re evil.”
Jackson pointed toward the door.
“Get out.”
Still muttering complaints, Luke turned to leave.
Halfway there, however, he stopped.
A strange expression crossed his face.
One that immediately caught Jackson’s attention.
“What now?”
Luke hesitated.
Then asked carefully,
“Does Selene still not know?”
The office became silent.
Completely silent.
Jackson’s expression changed instantly.
The humor vanished.
The confidence vanished.
Even the arrogance vanished.
Only tension remained.
Luke already knew the answer.
Because Jackson’s silence said everything.
“No.”
Jackson looked away.
Toward the window.
Toward the forests surrounding Blood Moon territory.
Toward the servant quarters hidden beyond the trees.
“No.”
Luke sighed.
“You should tell her.”
Jackson’s jaw tightened.
“It’s complicated.”
“Not really.”
Luke crossed his arms.
“She’s your mate.”
The words hung heavily in the air.
Mate.
The single most important bond in werewolf existence.
The Moon Goddess chose one person for every wolf.
One soul.
One destiny.
One future.
And somehow—
Jackson’s mate was Selene.
The orphan.
The servant.
The girl with no wolf.
The girl everyone looked down on.
Luke still remembered the day Jackson discovered the truth.
Years earlier.
One accidental encounter.
One brief scent.
One impossible realization.
Mate.
At first, Jackson had refused to believe it.
Then he had tried to ignore it.
Then hide it.
Because the truth was inconvenient.
Embarrassing.
Unacceptable.
An Alpha’s mate was supposed to be strong.
Respected.
Powerful.
Not a servant girl everyone treated like garbage.
“You can’t keep hiding it forever.”
Luke’s voice softened.
“What happens when she gets her wolf?”
Jackson didn’t answer.
Because he knew exactly what would happen.
The bond would awaken.
She would feel it.
Everything would change.
And the closer her eighteenth birthday became, the less certain he felt.
For the first time in years, fear crept into his thoughts.
Not fear of war.
Not fear of Alexander.
Not fear of rivals.
Fear of losing control.
Because recently his wolf had begun acting strangely.
Protective.
Possessive.
Obsessed.
And every instinct screamed the same thing.
Mine.
Meanwhile, across Blood Moon territory, Selene worked late into the evening.
She had no idea that the upcoming engagement party would also be her eighteenth birthday celebration.
No idea that the strongest Alpha in the country was traveling toward Blood Moon.
No idea that Jackson had been hiding a life-changing secret from her for years.
But as she carried decorations into the main hall, a sudden warmth spread through her chest.
Stronger than before.
More powerful than before.
She stopped walking.
Her heart raced.
For one brief second, she heard a voice.
A deep male voice.
Distant.
Yet somehow familiar.
Coming.
The whisper vanished immediately.
Selene looked around in confusion.
The hallway was empty.
Yet the strange feeling remained.
And hundreds of miles away, Alpha Alexander Kane suddenly opened his eyes.
His wolf surged violently.
Mate.
Closer.
Much closer.
Alexander slowly rose from his chair.
Tomorrow, he would arrive at Blood Moon.
And neither he nor Selene knew that fate was preparing to place them in the same room.
