How to Tame a Silver Fox – Episode 01
Rain sheeted across the street, turning the pavement into a mirror of smeared headlights. Harper Reeves stood beneath the narrow shelter of an awning and tried not to look as stranded as she felt. Her damp clothes clung to her skin, her ride was nowhere in sight, and the neighborhood grew less inviting with every passing minute.
A man passing nearby slowed to stare. “Looking good, girl,” he called, amusement thick in his voice. Harper looked away and tightened her grip on her phone, thinking that another creep was exactly what her night needed.
She called the one person who was supposed to answer when things went wrong. The line rang while cold rainwater slid down her neck. “Please pick up,” she whispered, fighting the embarrassing tremor in her hands.
When her father finally answered, noise crowded the background. Harper forced her voice to stay level. “Hi, Dad. I’m stuck, and I need you to come help me.”
“Sure thing, hon,” Mark Reeves replied, but he sounded distracted. A woman’s voice murmured close to him, and Harper’s humiliation sharpened into disbelief. “Mr. Reeves…” she said. “Are you seriously screwing someone right now?”
Mark ignored the accusation. “He’ll be there soon.” Before Harper could demand an explanation, the call ended, leaving her staring at the dark screen.
“Wait. He?” she muttered. “Who?” Her father had once again solved a problem by handing it to somebody else, and whoever he had sent was now another uncertainty on an already miserable night.
Across town, Chris Collins had a man pinned down inside his nightclub. Music throbbed beyond the walls while the accused dealer struggled uselessly beneath Chris’s grip. The polished club belonged to Chris, and he had no patience for anyone who endangered women under his roof.
“Drugging girls in my club?” Chris asked, his voice quiet enough to be more frightening than a shout. “You must have a death wish.” The man swore Chris had the wrong person, but Chris silenced him with a hard command.
His phone rang at the worst possible moment. Chris glanced at Mark’s name and answered with irritation already in his eyes. “You have the worst timing.”
Mark did not waste time apologizing. “You know that favor you owe me? I’m cashing it in. Now.” Whatever history lay behind that debt, it was enough to make Chris release the man to his security staff and walk away from unfinished business.
Back on the rain-darkened street, the stranger had moved closer to Harper. “What’s a princess like you doing in a place like this?” he asked, blocking the easiest path around him. “It’s nice and warm in the back of my truck.”
Disgust overcame Harper’s fear for one sharp second. “Ew. Get away from me, creep.” She tried to step past, but his expression changed when she rejected him.
“You’ve got a mouth on you, don’t you?” His hand shot out and caught her before she could retreat. Harper twisted away, ordering him to stop, but he only leaned closer. “Let’s see what else it can do.”
Panic crashed through her. The rain swallowed the smaller sounds of the struggle, and the street suddenly seemed impossibly empty. Harper shoved against him, but his grip tightened.
An engine cut through the downpour. A vehicle stopped close enough to throw white light across them, and a man emerged with the controlled speed of someone who did not need to announce how dangerous he was. The stranger’s hold loosened as he turned.
Chris crossed the distance between them and pulled the man away from Harper as if he weighed nothing. “What the hell?” the creep sputtered, but whatever he saw in Chris’s face killed the rest of his protest.
Harper backed toward the vehicle, breathless and shaken, then stared at her rescuer through the rain. Silver touched his dark hair, but she knew the severe face beneath it. “Mr. Collins?” she said, disbelief replacing fear as the truth landed. Her father had sent his best friend.
