Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad – Chapter 3
Fay barely slept that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw two faces.
Daniel.
And Kent Lippert.
One had shattered her heart.
The other had somehow become even more dangerous.
By sunrise, Fay had convinced herself that she was being ridiculous.
Kent Lippert wasn’t some mysterious fantasy figure.
He was a criminal.
A convicted criminal.
A murderer.
A man whose name appeared in countless headlines alongside words like organized crime, racketeering, extortion, and homicide.
The fact that he happened to be devastatingly handsome was completely irrelevant.
At least, that’s what she kept telling herself.
“You’ve got this, Fay.”
She whispered the words while standing outside the state correctional facility.
Her first major psychological evaluation assignment.
A routine assessment.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
The massive steel gates buzzed open.
Fay tightened her grip on her clipboard and walked inside.
The prison felt colder than the winter air outside.
Guards escorted her through a maze of concrete hallways and reinforced security doors.
Every metallic click echoed through the building.
Finally, they reached a private interview room.
One guard opened the door.
“Good luck.”
The way he said it made Fay nervous.
Very nervous.
The door closed behind her.
And there he was.
Kent Lippert.
For a moment, Fay forgot how to breathe.
The photographs online hadn’t done him justice.
Not even close.
The man sitting across from her radiated authority.
Power.
Danger.
He wasn’t wearing a designer suit or surrounded by bodyguards.
Yet somehow he still looked like he owned the room.
Owned the prison.
Owned everyone in it.
Including her.
Dark eyes lifted toward her.
A slow smile appeared.
And suddenly Fay understood why powerful people feared him.
“Mr. Lippert.”
Her voice sounded much smaller than intended.
She quickly cleared her throat.
“My name is Fay Thompson, and I will be administering your state psychological assessment.”
Kent leaned back in his chair.
The handcuffs around his wrists seemed almost insulting.
Like someone had attempted to chain a lion.
“You’re doing my psych evaluation?”
His gaze slowly traveled from her face to her shoes.
Then back again.
Amusement flickered in his eyes.
“You look like a little girl playing doctor.”
Heat rushed into Fay’s cheeks.
Most people would’ve been intimidated.
Unfortunately for Kent, she’d already survived one heartbreak this week.
Her patience was gone.
“I assure you,” she replied coolly, “that I am more than qualified.”
One dark eyebrow lifted.
Clearly, he wasn’t convinced.
Neither was she.
But she wasn’t about to admit that.
Pull it together, Fay.
Don’t let him get to you.
She sat down across from him and opened her file.
Kent continued watching her.
Not speaking.
Not moving.
Just watching.
It was unsettling.
Like being studied by a predator.
“Let’s begin.”
The words came out firmer this time.
Kent nodded once.
“By all means.”
Fay glanced down at her paperwork.
“Can you please state your full name and date of birth?”
A faint smile touched his lips.
“You already know the answer.”
“Mr. Lippert, this is standard procedure.”
His eyes sparkled with amusement.
He enjoyed challenging her.
Of course he did.
After several seconds, he finally answered.
She recorded the information and continued.
“The next questions will be of a more personal and psychological nature.”
Kent folded his arms.
“What gives you the right to ask me anything?”
Fay straightened.
“The state has issued me a license to conduct this evaluation.”
“Has it?”
His deep voice rolled through the room.
Dangerously calm.
Dangerously confident.
Fay forced herself to maintain eye contact.
For several long moments, neither of them looked away.
Then something changed.
Kent’s expression shifted.
Subtly.
Almost imperceptibly.
He leaned forward.
Closer.
Much closer.
Fay’s pulse immediately accelerated.
“What are you doing?”
Instead of answering, Kent inhaled slowly.
Once.
Twice.
His eyes darkened.
The look unsettled her more than any threat ever could.
“What?”
Kent’s gaze remained fixed on her.
“Chamomile.”
Fay blinked.
“What?”
“Lavender.”
Confusion replaced irritation.
She stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
A slow smile appeared.
The kind of smile that suggested he knew something she didn’t.
“Your perfume.”
Fay’s stomach tightened.
Most men couldn’t identify perfume brands.
Kent had somehow identified individual ingredients.
How?
Why?
Before she could respond, he continued.
His voice dropped lower.
More intimate.
More dangerous.
“Interesting.”
Every instinct in her body screamed warning.
“What’s interesting?”
Kent held her gaze.
And for the first time since entering the room, she felt completely exposed.
Like he could see straight through her.
Past her professional mask.
Past her confidence.
Past every defense she possessed.
Then he delivered the final blow.
“You must be a virgin.”
The world stopped.
Fay’s eyes widened.
Her clipboard nearly slipped from her hands.
“What?”
A triumphant gleam appeared in Kent’s eyes.
The Mafia King smiled.
And suddenly Fay realized something terrifying.
This wasn’t an interview.
It was a game.
And somehow…
Kent Lippert was already winning.
To be continued…
