Chapter 7 – The Girl I Couldn’t Lose
The bathroom door slammed against the wall.
“Hey!”
Cole’s voice cut through the room like thunder.
“Get the hell away from her!”
Brent instinctively stepped back.
Before he could react, Cole grabbed him by the front of his shirt and yanked him away from Kaitlyn.
“Cole…”
Kaitlyn’s weak voice barely rose above a whisper.
She swayed unsteadily.
“You came…”
Cole caught her before she could lose her balance.
“I’ve got you.”
His voice softened instantly.
“You’re safe.”
Those two words were enough to make Kaitlyn’s tense shoulders finally relax.
Brent struggled against Cole’s grip.
“Are you crazy?”
“Let me go!”
Cole didn’t move.
Instead, his eyes swept over Kaitlyn.
Her breathing was uneven.
Her pupils were unfocused.
She could barely stay on her feet.
His expression darkened.
Realization struck him all at once.
“You can’t even stand.”
He slowly turned back toward Brent.
His voice became frighteningly calm.
“…Did you drug her?”
Brent’s face froze.
For one split second…
That was all the answer Cole needed.
Without another word—
BAM!
His fist connected with Brent’s jaw.
The impact echoed through the hallway.
Students rushed toward the bathroom after hearing the noise.
Within seconds, a crowd had gathered.
No one had ever seen Cole Hart lose control.
The quiet honor student.
The campus golden boy.
The man everyone admired.
Now he looked ready to tear someone apart.
“What the hell?”
“I’ve never seen Cole this angry.”
Lydia felt her face go pale.
“What if he finds out we helped Brent?”
Nat grabbed her arm.
“Shut up.”
“He’s not going to make a scene over some freshman.”
But Cole wasn’t listening to anyone anymore.
He hauled Brent back to his feet.
“Tell them.”
Brent spat blood onto the floor.
“I didn’t do anything.”
Another punch landed.
“This…”
Cole’s voice shook with fury.
“…is for drugging a defenseless girl.”
Brent finally broke.
“Okay!”
“Okay!”
“I did it!”
His terrified confession silenced the hallway.
“I put something in her drink!”
“I’m sorry!”
“But I wasn’t alone!”
He pointed toward Lydia and Nat.
“They helped me!”
The girls immediately shook their heads.
“He’s lying!”
“We didn’t—”
Before either of them could finish, one of the panicked girls accidentally knocked over a tray of brightly colored party drinks.
Sticky punch splashed across expensive dresses and shoes.
“Oh my God!”
“My dress!”
“It got in my eyes!”
The hallway erupted into complete chaos.
No one noticed Cole stepping directly between Kaitlyn and everyone else.
His broad shoulders formed a shield around her.
His cold gaze swept across the crowd.
“If anyone…”
He spoke slowly enough that every single person heard him.
“…ever lays another hand on Kaitlyn Sinclair…”
His eyes lingered on Brent.
“…you’ll answer to me.”
Silence.
No one dared respond.
Cole gently wrapped his arm around Kaitlyn’s shoulders.
“Come on.”
“We’re leaving.”
She leaned against him as they walked outside into the cool night air.
The breeze helped clear her thoughts just enough for her to look up at him.
“Are you hurt?”
Cole asked quietly.
She shook her head.
“No.”
Then she studied his face.
The concern in his eyes looked painfully genuine.
“Why did you come for me?”
Her voice was soft.
“Why do you care so much?”
Cole looked away.
Inside his head, another voice answered immediately.
“Because the thought of losing you terrified me.”
But another voice interrupted.
“She’s Ryan’s little sister.”
“She’s vulnerable.”
“Don’t cross that line.”
He clenched his jaw.
Kaitlyn was still slightly dizzy.
This wasn’t the time.
Not now.
Not like this.
He forced himself to stay calm.
“You scared me.”
“That’s all.”
Kaitlyn smiled faintly.
“Really?”
“Because…”
She stepped a little closer, still leaning against him for support.
“You looked pretty jealous back there.”
Cole blinked.
“What?”
“All those guys were staring at me.”
She smiled teasingly.
“You kept telling me my dress was too short.”
“You practically dragged me out of that party.”
She tilted her head.
“If I didn’t know any better…”
Her green eyes searched his.
“…I’d think you were jealous.”
Cole’s heartbeat became deafening.
“Tell her.”
“Tell her how you feel.”
Instead, he shook his head far too quickly.
“No.”
“I…”
The word caught in his throat.
Because for the first time in his life…
Cole Hart couldn’t lie to himself anymore.
He wasn’t acting like Ryan’s protective best friend.
He wasn’t simply worried about a roommate.
He was jealous.
Hopelessly, undeniably jealous.
And that realization frightened him almost as much as it thrilled him.
