Chapter 4 – A Dangerous Night
Brent couldn’t take his eyes off Kaitlyn.
She stood beneath the party lights, smiling politely as she introduced herself to strangers, looking happier than she’d looked in months.
It should have made him happy.
Instead…
It made him furious.
Only this morning she’d been crying over him.
Now the entire room couldn’t stop staring at her.
And somehow…
Cole Hart’s name kept coming up.
Brent’s jaw tightened.
“So that’s the guy she’s living with…”
His hands curled into fists.
“No.”
His voice was barely more than a whisper.
“I’m not letting Cole steal her from me.”
His jealousy twisted into something ugly.
He motioned for Maddy’s friends to come closer.
“I need a favor.”
The girls exchanged knowing glances before one of them smirked.
“I think we can help.”
Across the room, Kaitlyn was trying to ignore the whispers surrounding her.
A cheerful brunette approached with another girl.
“Hi!”
“I’m Lydia.”
“And this is Nat.”
Kaitlyn smiled politely.
“I’m Kaitlyn.”
“It’s my first week here.”
“We figured.”
Lydia laughed warmly.
“You looked a little lost.”
“Come hang out with us.”
For the first time that day, Kaitlyn felt like maybe college wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Nat handed her a plastic cup.
“To new friends.”
Kaitlyn hesitated for only a second before lifting her drink.
“To new friends.”
“Cheers!”
Music exploded through the room as everyone laughed and clinked their cups together.
Around them, students danced and shouted over the music.
No one noticed one of the girls quietly brushing against Kaitlyn.
“Oh!”
The girl stumbled deliberately, bumping Kaitlyn’s arm.
“So sorry!”
“It’s okay,” Kaitlyn answered with an embarrassed smile.
“It was an accident.”
She never noticed the quick glance the girl exchanged with Brent across the room.
Brent watched from a distance.
A satisfied smile slowly spread across his face.
Several minutes later…
Kaitlyn frowned.
The room suddenly felt… warmer.
The music sounded strangely distant.
She blinked.
Why was everything becoming blurry?
She pressed a hand against her forehead.
“That’s weird…”
“I haven’t even had that much to drink.”
Her balance wavered.
Lydia caught her arm.
“Are you okay?”
“I…”
Kaitlyn forced a smile.
“I just feel a little dizzy.”
Across campus…
Cole sat at his desk, attempting to focus on the textbook in front of him.
He’d read the same paragraph four times.
None of it had registered.
His thoughts kept drifting back to Kaitlyn.
The dress.
Her smile.
The way she’d challenged him before walking out the door.
He rubbed his temples.
“Why am I worrying so much?”
His phone suddenly buzzed.
A message from one of his classmates flashed across the screen.
Hey, Cole.
I saw your roommate at the freshman party.
Something doesn’t look right. I think someone may have tampered with her drink.
For a split second…
The world went silent.
Cole was already on his feet before he’d finished reading the message.
His chair crashed onto the floor behind him.
“No…”
His heart pounded.
“I never should’ve let her go alone.”
He grabbed his keys and sprinted out of the apartment without even bothering to lock the door.
Every second suddenly felt like it mattered.
Meanwhile…
At the crowded party, Kaitlyn leaned against the wall, struggling to stay steady as the room continued to spin around her.
She had no idea that danger was closing in.
And she had no idea someone was racing across campus to find her.
To be continued…
