The morning sun bathed the sprawling Kaplan estate in gold, illuminating the luxury cars lined up outside the mansion.

Inside, servants hurried through the halls carrying designer outfits and accessories worth more than most people made in a year.

“Good morning, Miss Hailey,” one of them greeted respectfully.

A Gucci outfit was displayed on a mannequin. Beside it sat a Chanel handbag, a matching backpack, and a pair of custom-made Louboutins.

Everything had been carefully prepared for Hailey Kaplan’s first day at her new school.

But Hailey barely glanced at them.

“Thanks, guys,” she said with a smile. “But this year, I’m changing things up.”

The servants exchanged confused looks.

“Changing things up?”

Hailey opened her closet and pulled out a plain white T-shirt and a pair of simple jeans.

The room fell silent.

For seventeen years, she had been known as the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the country.

Today, she wanted to be nobody.

Or at least, nobody special.

Downstairs, her father nearly dropped his coffee when he saw her.

“Sweetheart…” he said slowly. “What are you wearing?”

Hailey spun around proudly.

“What? It’s comfortable.”

Her father’s expression only worsened when he noticed the bicycle waiting outside.

“And what’s with the bike?”

“Dad,” Hailey groaned, “I don’t want to be known as the Kaplan heiress.”

He frowned.

“That’s impossible. You are the Kaplan heiress.”

“Exactly. That’s the problem.”

Hailey crossed her arms.

“All my life, people only liked me because of our last name. They wanted invitations to our parties, connections to our family, or money.”

For a moment, her voice softened.

“This transfer is supposed to be a fresh start. I want real friends.”

Her father sighed.

“You know I can have a driver take you.”

“No.”

“A security team?”

“No.”

“A limousine?”

“Definitely no.”

“You’re really riding that bike?”

Hailey grinned.

“Yep.”

Her father looked like he was about to have a heart attack.

A few minutes later, Hailey pedaled toward her new school.

The cool breeze brushed against her face.

For the first time in years, she felt free.

No bodyguards.

No expensive uniforms.

No expectations.

Just her.

Of course, she didn’t notice the black SUV quietly following her from a distance.

Inside sat Adam, the Kaplan family’s trusted security chief.

“Mr. Kaplan said not to let her out of your sight,” the driver reminded him.

Adam nodded.

“As always.”

At the same time, excitement buzzed across campus.

Rumors had spread like wildfire.

The famous Kaplan heiress was transferring in today.

Students crowded the hallways, whispering eagerly.

“I heard she’s gorgeous.”

“I heard she owns three sports cars.”

“I heard she has a private jet.”

“Forget that,” another girl said. “If we become friends with her, we’ll be set for life.”

Two girls stood among the crowd, already plotting.

Gail and Tiffany.

They were determined to join the heiress’s inner circle before anyone else.

Little did they know, the girl they were looking for had already arrived.

And she looked nothing like what they expected.

Hailey parked her bike near the entrance.

As she adjusted her backpack, she overheard nearby conversations.

“The Kaplan heiress is supposed to be rich rich.”

“We have to find her ASAP.”

“Imagine getting invited to her parties.”

Hailey rolled her eyes.

And that is exactly why I’m hiding who I am.

She turned to walk away.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

“Ew.”

A sharp voice stopped her.

Hailey looked up.

Two girls were staring at her from head to toe.

One of them wrinkled her nose dramatically.

“Look what the Goodwill dragged in.”

The other snorted.

“Seriously. Did she get dressed in the dark?”

Hailey sighed.

First day.

Five minutes on campus.

Already dealing with idiots.

“Eavesdropping much?” Gail sneered.

“Loser.”

“Careful,” Tiffany added mockingly. “She might ask us for spare change.”

The girls burst into laughter.

Hailey stared at them for a moment.

Then she smiled.

A dangerous smile.

“Wow.”

The girls blinked.

“Your insults are just as basic as your personalities.”

The laughter stopped immediately.

Gail’s face turned red.

“What did you just say?”

Hailey shrugged.

“You heard me.”

“You bargain-bin reject!”

“Creative,” Hailey said dryly.

“Did you spend all night thinking of that one?”

The crowd nearby began paying attention.

Whispers spread.

Someone was actually standing up to Gail.

That almost never happened.

Enraged, Gail stormed forward.

With a sudden movement, she slapped Hailey’s bicycle helmet off her head.

The helmet crashed onto the pavement.

“Oops,” Gail mocked.

“Did I ruin your little cartoon helmet?”

Hailey looked down at it.

Then back at Gail.

Her patience was running out.

“What are you?” Gail continued. “Five years old?”

Without warning, Hailey grabbed Gail’s wrist.

Hard.

“Ow!”

Gail gasped.

“What are you doing?!”

“Teaching you boundaries.”

Gail struggled.

“Let go!”

Hailey’s grip tightened.

The arrogant smile vanished from Gail’s face.

For the first time, fear flashed in her eyes.

Around them, students watched in stunned silence.

Nobody had ever seen someone challenge Gail like this.

Nobody.

Then Tiffany suddenly stepped forward.

And what she pulled from her pocket made the entire crowd gasp.

A knife.

The metal blade gleamed beneath the morning sun.

Hailey’s eyes narrowed.

Her first day at school had just become far more dangerous than she expected.
