The apartment offered one bed and a narrow couch. Noah chose the couch before Alaina could discuss it, removing a tension that might otherwise have filled the room.
She gave him a blanket and one of the pillows from her bed. Domestic familiarity returned in gestures neither had practiced for years.
Rain struck the windows while they reviewed Courtney’s draft statement. It described the breakup without turning sacrifice into romantic virtue.
“We should have talked,” Alaina said. “I don’t want people believing what I did was noble.”
“It was loving and wrong.” Noah looked at her. “Both can be true.”
She accepted the description. His revenge had been wounded and wrong in the same complicated way.
Near midnight, the power flickered out. The city beyond the windows became a blur of rain and distant emergency lights.
Alaina found candles in a kitchen drawer. Their small glow softened the apartment and erased the billionaire from Noah’s silhouette.
They spoke about Oxford for the first time without accusation. Noah admitted he had been terrified of failing after losing the person who made success meaningful.
Alaina described her mother’s final weeks. She had sat beside the same hospital bed, wondering whether Noah hated her enough to stop hurting.
He moved from the couch to the floor beside her chair. “I’m sorry you were alone.”
“I chose to be.”
“You shouldn’t have had to choose.”
The quiet between them no longer concealed a lie. Alaina reached for his hand.
Noah waited until she leaned toward him. “Are you sure?”
“About this moment.”
Their kiss was gentle, carrying grief before hunger. It did not restore their engagement or erase the intervening years.
When they separated, Noah rested his forehead against hers. Neither promised forever.
The power returned, filling the room with ordinary light. Alaina laughed softly at how little the world had changed.
Then Noah’s phone displayed Courtney’s breaking report. The story was already live—and the anonymous source had released a second allegation accusing Noah of paying Peter to lie.
