Chapter 1 – The Worst First Day Ever
Kaitlyn Sanders stood in front of the tiny mirror hanging on her bedroom wall, smoothing the wrinkles from her favorite summer dress for what felt like the tenth time.
Today was supposed to be perfect.
The first day of college.
A new beginning.
A new apartment with her boyfriend.
And finally, the chance to give Brent the gift she’d spent the entire summer working overtime to afford.
She smiled at the neatly wrapped box in her hands.
“He’s going to love it.”
Two double shifts every weekend, aching feet, endless rude customers—it had all been worth it for this moment.
After all, Brent wasn’t just her boyfriend.
He was her first love.
Her future.
At least, that’s what she’d believed.
The apartment door wasn’t locked.
Weird.
“Brent?” Kaitlyn called as she stepped inside.
No answer.
Instead…
Laughter.
A girl’s laughter.
Her heartbeat slowed.
Then stopped.
She walked toward the bedroom, each step heavier than the last.
The door stood half open.
And there he was.
Brent.
In bed.
With another girl.
The gift box slipped from Kaitlyn’s fingers and hit the floor with a dull thud.
Brent’s eyes widened.
“Kaitlyn? Why are you here so early?”
She stared at him, unable to process what she was seeing.
“I left work early to surprise you…”
Her voice trembled.
“…and this is what I find?”
Brent sighed as though she had inconvenienced him.
“I mean… can you even call it cheating?”
He shrugged lazily.
“You never wanted to sleep with me anyway.”
The words hit harder than any slap.
Before Kaitlyn could respond, the blonde woman beside him climbed out of bed with a smug smile.
She picked up the wrapped gift.
“Oh? Is this for Brent?”
She admired the ribbon before flashing Kaitlyn a fake smile.
“Thanks.”
Kaitlyn rushed forward.
“Don’t touch that!”
The woman ignored her.
“I’m Maddy.”
She flipped her hair dramatically.
“President of Theta Gamma.”
“The hottest sorority on campus.”
She looked Kaitlyn up and down as though examining something beneath her.
“You can leave now.”
Kaitlyn frowned.
“What?”
“This is our apartment.”
Maddy laughed.
Brent answered instead.
“Actually…”
He pulled a set of keys from his pocket.
“It’s my apartment.”
Kaitlyn’s face drained of color.
“What?”
“You signed everything over to me, remember?”
“You asked me to!” she cried.
“I trusted you!”
Brent merely shrugged.
Maddy noticed Kaitlyn’s oversized T-shirt and faded jeans.
“No wonder your boyfriend got bored.”
She grabbed Kaitlyn’s milkshake from the kitchen counter and, without hesitation, dumped it over her.
Cold strawberry milk dripped through Kaitlyn’s hair and soaked her clothes.
Maddy tossed the empty cup aside.
“There.”
“Now you match your personality.”
Kaitlyn lunged for the gift.
“I paid for that!”
She managed to snatch it back before glaring at both of them.
“You deserve each other.”
Her voice shook—not from fear, but heartbreak.
“A cheater…”
She looked directly at Brent.
“…and a pathetic homewrecker.”
She turned and walked out before either of them could answer.
The moment the apartment door closed behind her…
The tears came.
She sat on a bench outside, hugging the ruined gift to her chest as she dialed the only person she could count on.
Her older brother.
Ryan answered immediately.
“Katie?”
The second she heard his voice, she broke down.
“Ryan…”
“Brent cheated on me.”
“I don’t have anywhere to go.”
Ryan’s tone softened instantly.
“Oh, Katie…”
“I’m so sorry.”
A pause.
“Listen.”
“I’m studying abroad in London this semester.”
“You can stay at my apartment.”
Relief washed over her.
“Really?”
“Of course.”
“You’re family.”
“You’ll be safe there.”
Kaitlyn wiped away another tear.
“Ryan… you’re the best.”
“There is one thing—”
Ryan’s voice suddenly crackled.
“Cole moved in—”
“What?”
The signal became distorted.
“Ryan, I can’t hear you!”
“I’ll text you later!”
The call disconnected.
Kaitlyn sighed.
It didn’t matter.
Anything was better than sleeping on the street.
An hour later, Kaitlyn unlocked the apartment Ryan had told her about.
The place was quiet.
Modern.
Spotless.
Exactly how she’d imagined her responsible older brother lived.
She dropped her suitcase beside the couch and sighed.
“This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.”
Instead…
She smelled like strawberry milkshake.
Wonderful.
She wandered toward one of the bedrooms, hoping to find a towel.
A familiar scent drifted through the room.
Rich cedar.
Fresh citrus.
Masculine.
She frowned.
“Ryan changed cologne?”
Curious, she picked up the T-shirt lying on the bed and instinctively buried her face in the soft fabric.
It definitely wasn’t Ryan’s usual scent.
Before she could think about it any further—
A deep male voice echoed behind her.
“Who are you…”
“…and why are you wearing my shirt?”
Kaitlyn froze.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Slowly…
She turned around.
Standing in the doorway was a tall man with damp hair, wearing nothing but gray sweatpants.
Sharp jawline.
Broad shoulders.
The exact face she’d secretly dreamed about since she was sixteen.
Cole Bennett.
Ryan’s best friend.
Her impossible childhood crush.
And she was standing in his bedroom…
Half dressed…
Holding his shirt against her face.
Heat flooded her cheeks.
“Please let the floor open up and swallow me alive.”
To be continued…
