Chapter 2 – Living with My First Crush

Cole Bennett.

The name alone was enough to send Kaitlyn’s heart spiraling back several years.

She was thirteen the first time she cried because of other girls.

The popular girls at school had cornered her after class, laughing as they whispered loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Nobody’s ever kissed Kaitlyn.”

“She’s too plain.”

“Who would want her?”

She’d run all the way home before the tears finally came.

Cole found her sitting alone on the backyard swing.

He was only a few years older than Ryan, but somehow he always knew when something was wrong.

“Those girls bothering you again?” he asked softly.

Kaitlyn nodded, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her hoodie.

“They said everyone’s going to find out I’ve never had my first kiss…”

Her voice cracked.

“They said it’s because I’m ugly.”

Cole’s expression darkened.

“They’re idiots.”

She looked up.

“Boys your age are even bigger idiots.”

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

“They don’t recognize beauty even when it’s standing right in front of them.”

Kaitlyn blinked.

“You don’t have to lie to make me feel better.”

“I’m not lying.”

His voice was steady.

“You’ve never been ugly, Katie.”

“Not then.”

“Not now.”

Her heart skipped.

“But…”

She looked down again.

“I’m never going to get kissed.”

Cole stood quietly for a moment before taking one step closer.

“We’ve known each other forever.”

“So…”

“This probably doesn’t count.”

Before Kaitlyn could ask what he meant…

He gently cupped her cheek.

His lips brushed against hers.

Soft.

Quick.

Barely more than a whisper.

But to thirteen-year-old Kaitlyn…

It was everything.

Cole pulled away first, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.

“There.”

He smiled.

“Now nobody can say you’ve never been kissed.”

Heat rushed into Kaitlyn’s cheeks.

She couldn’t even breathe.

Then Cole’s smile faded.

“But…”

“You have to keep this between us.”

“If Ryan finds out…”

He laughed nervously.

“…he’ll kill me.”

For years, Kaitlyn had convinced herself that kiss meant nothing.

Cole treated her like family.

Like Ryan’s annoying little sister.

She admired him.

Trusted him.

But somewhere deep inside…

Her childish admiration had quietly become something much bigger.

Something she’d never admitted to anyone.

Not even herself.

“So…”

Cole folded his arms as they stood awkwardly in the apartment.

“What are you doing here, Katie?”

“My brother said I could stay here while he’s studying abroad.”

She smiled sheepishly.

“I’m starting college today.”

“What about you?”

“I live here.”

He shrugged casually.

“I moved in with Ryan a few months ago.”

Kaitlyn froze.

“You… live here?”

“You didn’t know?”

She slowly shook her head.

Ryan’s warning suddenly echoed in her memory.

“Cole moved in—”

The call had cut out before she heard the rest.

Cole grinned.

“Looks like whether you stay here…”

“…is actually up to me.”

He leaned against the wall with an amused smile.

“So.”

“What are you going to do to convince me?”

Kaitlyn rolled her eyes.

“Seriously?”

“When did you become such a jerk?”

Cole laughed.

The sound was warm and familiar.

For a split second…

The awful day she’d had almost disappeared.

Almost.

His smile slowly faded as he looked closer.

Her eyes were red.

Mascara stained her cheeks.

Her oversized shirt was still spotted with dried milkshake.

“She’s been crying…”

His chest tightened.

“What happened?”

Kaitlyn looked away.

“It’s nothing.”

“I’ll just leave.”

She reached for her suitcase.

“I’m sorry for barging in.”

Before she could move, Cole caught the handle.

“Hey.”

She looked back.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

His voice was calm but firm.

“Stay.”

“Really?”

“Of course.”

“We’ve known each other practically our whole lives.”

“I’m not letting you end up homeless.”

Relief flooded through her.

“Thank you.”

He pointed toward the bedroom.

“Only one condition.”

“Don’t distract me from studying.”

Kaitlyn laughed for the first time all day.

“I promise.”

“I’ll be the perfect roommate.”

Cole glanced down at the oversized shirt hanging off one shoulder.

“My shirt.”

Her eyes widened.

“Oh my God!”

She immediately tried pulling it off.

“I’m so sorry!”

He burst into laughter.

“I’m kidding.”

“You can keep it.”

He shrugged.

“It actually looks better on you.”

Her cheeks turned bright pink.

“Why is he suddenly so nice?”

Later that evening…

Kaitlyn stood in front of the mirror wearing a fitted black party dress.

After everything Brent had done to her…

She refused to spend the night crying.

If this was her fresh start…

She was going to own it.

She stepped into the living room.

“So…”

“How do I look?”

Cole looked up from his textbook.

Time stopped.

The oversized T-shirt she’d been wearing was gone.

In its place was a dress that hugged every curve she’d grown into over the past few years.

His heartbeat skipped.

“When did she…”

“…become this beautiful?”

He quickly looked away.

“Get a grip.”

“She’s Ryan’s little sister.”

“She’s off-limits.”

“You look…”

He searched desperately for the safest possible answer.

“…different.”

Kaitlyn frowned.

“Different?”

Cole cleared his throat.

“You can’t wear that.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“The dress.”

“It’s too short.”

“Go change.”

Kaitlyn folded her arms.

“You don’t get to tell me what to wear.”

“You’re not my brother.”

Cole stepped closer without thinking.

“If you walk out wearing that…”

His jaw tightened.

“I swear to God, I’ll—”

“You’ll what?”

She looked up at him, refusing to back down.

“What exactly are you going to do, Cole?”

The apartment suddenly fell silent.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them looked away.

For the first time…

Neither of them was pretending this was simply a relationship between a protective older brother’s best friend…

…and his little sister.

To be continued…
