The apartment felt quieter after dinner.
Jocelyn West carefully packed the remaining cornbread into a small container.
“How does it feel now?” she asked gently.
Ray flexed his fingers.
“Much better.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“Thank you.”
Jocelyn nodded, already shifting into her usual rhythm of care.
“I’m going to package the cornbread for you. You can take it with you.”
Ray blinked.
“What? That’s not necessary.”
But Jocelyn was already moving around the kitchen, wrapping the food with quiet efficiency.
“I’m catching a flight later today,” she added softly. “Back to my hometown. I won’t be able to finish it anyway.”
That sentence landed heavier than it should have.
Ray looked up sharply.
“You’re leaving?”
Jocelyn didn’t look sad.
Not exactly.
More like… resigned.
“Yes.”
She tied the container carefully.
“After so many years in the city, I think I’m ready to return to a quiet rural life.”
Ray watched her closely.
The way she spoke wasn’t dramatic.
There was no anger.
No bitterness.
Just acceptance.
And somehow, that made it more powerful.
He stood up.
“Then let me give you a ride to the airport.”
Jocelyn paused.
“That’s not necessary.”
Ray shrugged slightly, but his tone softened.
“After a meal like that… it’s the least I can do.”
Before she could refuse again, he stepped forward.
“Hey, let me get that for you.”
He took the bag from her hands with quiet confidence.
Jocelyn hesitated… then let him.
A strange comfort had begun to form between them.
As they walked toward the door, Ray glanced at her.
“So… you’re really going back to your hometown?”
“Yeah.”
Jocelyn nodded.
Her eyes drifted briefly to the window, as if she could already see the road leading away from the city.
“I just want something quieter. Slower. Simple.”
Ray didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, he studied her.
A woman who gave without asking.
Who cooked like she was caring for someone she loved.
Who spoke about leaving like she was disappearing from a life she never truly belonged to.
They stepped outside.
A small stray cat appeared near the entrance, meowing softly.
Jocelyn’s face instantly lit up.
“Oh, look.”
She crouched down.
“Come here, kitty kitty.”
The cat approached cautiously.
Jocelyn gently placed a small piece of food on the ground.
“I got you some food. You want to see it?”
She smiled as the cat began eating.
Ray stood behind her, watching silently.
There was something effortless about her kindness.
Something rare.
Jocelyn brushed the cat’s head softly.
“Look who’s going to take care of you when I go home,” she murmured. “Who’s going to give you little treats?”
Her voice carried a quiet sadness now.
Not for herself.
But for something she was leaving behind.
Ray’s expression changed.
Something inside him shifted.
He stepped closer.
“Jocelyn.”
She looked up.
The street was quiet.
The world around them seemed to slow.
Ray met her eyes directly.
And for the first time since they met, there was no test in his gaze.
No disguise.
Just certainty.
“Let’s get married.”
The words fell between them like a line that couldn’t be taken back.
Jocelyn froze.
Even the cat paused mid-bite.
And in that moment, everything—her hometown plans, his hidden identity, and the fragile distance between them—hung suspended in the air.
