The Virgin’s Bucket List – Episode 25

Wayne stared at the boy on the porch, searching for pieces of himself. Jamie was shorter and leaner, but the resemblance around their eyes was unmistakable. The completed compass hung from his fist, its two halves locked together after years apart.

Lindsay invited him inside. Jamie refused until Wayne promised Evelyn was not in the house. His suspicion suggested their mother was a threat rather than the frightened woman described in the buried letter.

Wayne gave the promise and stepped aside. Jamie entered without removing his jacket, ready to flee at the first sign of betrayal. Mike kept his distance, recognizing him as the disguised visitor from the security footage.

Jamie admitted stealing the pendant. Mara had told him that if anyone connected to Evelyn found him, he should retrieve Catherine’s half before they could use it as proof of his identity. He had followed old letters to the Johnson address and posed as a repair assistant.

Wayne asked why the compass mattered. Jamie twisted its outer rim, revealing a tiny compartment beneath the joined halves. Inside was a memory card too small for the technology available when their mothers separated them.

Someone had modified the pendant recently. Jamie claimed Mara added the card shortly before her death and instructed him to watch it only if Evelyn returned. Fear had kept him from opening it alone.

Julie found an adapter and loaded the file onto her laptop. Mara appeared on screen, older and visibly ill. She explained that Evelyn had not abandoned James willingly; a court order and threats from James’s father had forced her away.

Mara had raised him under a protected identity. Years later, evidence cleared Evelyn of the accusations used against her, but Mara concealed the news because she feared losing the child she considered her son. Her confession transformed Jamie’s certainty into grief.

The video ended with an apology. Mara asked Jamie to judge Evelyn by what she did next rather than by the lies that separated them. She also revealed that James’s father had died, meaning the original danger no longer existed.

Jamie shut the laptop. His anger had protected his love for Mara, and accepting the truth felt like betraying the woman who raised him. Wayne did not demand that he call Evelyn “Mom” or forgive anyone.

Instead, he said Mara had been Jamie’s mother in every way that mattered. Evelyn’s suffering did not erase the years Mara devoted to him, just as Mara’s deception did not erase her love. Jamie’s guarded expression cracked.

A car stopped across the street. A woman stepped out but remained beside the driver’s door, staring at the Johnson house. Wayne recognized Evelyn despite the years etched across her face.

Jamie moved toward the back exit. Lindsay blocked no path; she simply told him he could leave if that was his choice. He looked at the completed compass, then at Wayne, and decided to remain.

Wayne opened the front door. Evelyn crossed the lawn slowly, as though any sudden movement might send both sons away. She stopped several feet from the porch and spoke Jamie’s birth name.

Jamie flinched. He told her that Mara was his mother and warned her not to rewrite his life. Evelyn agreed, tears filling her eyes. She had not come to replace Mara, only to answer whatever questions he was willing to ask.

Wayne’s own questions crowded behind his silence. Evelyn had also kept the truth from him. He asked why she never told him about James after the danger ended, and she admitted shame had become another kind of prison.

The reunion remained fragile, without easy embraces or instant forgiveness. Still, Jamie stepped onto the porch rather than retreating. Wayne stood beside him, allowing their shoulders to touch without forcing more.

Evelyn reached into her bag and produced a regional championship ticket. Someone had mailed it anonymously with a note saying both her sons would be there. Across town, Alyssa deleted the receipt for the ticket and smiled at the chaos she had set in motion.
