Chapter 8 – The Line We Can’t Cross

The cold night air surrounded them as they stood outside the fraternity house.

Neither of them spoke.

Cole could still feel Kaitlyn’s hand resting lightly against his arm.

His heartbeat refused to slow.

“Katie…”

His voice came out softer than he intended.

She looked up at him with those familiar green eyes.

“What?”

For one dangerous moment, every reason he had ever built to stay away from her disappeared.

She wasn’t Ryan’s little sister.

She wasn’t the awkward thirteen-year-old who used to follow them around.

She was a woman standing right in front of him.

Without thinking, Cole leaned closer.

Kaitlyn didn’t pull away.

Instead, she closed the distance herself.

Their lips met in a gentle, hesitant kiss.

It was brief.

Tentative.

Yet it carried years of unspoken feelings.

When they finally separated, Kaitlyn smiled through a nervous laugh.

“Sorry…”

Cole searched her face.

“It’s okay.”

He admitted quietly,

“I didn’t want it to end.”

For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.

Then reality crashed back into Cole’s mind.

“Ryan.”

“Your best friend.”

“His little sister.”

He stepped backward as if burned.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Cole?”

The words weren’t meant for Kaitlyn.

They were aimed squarely at himself.

“This…”

He shook his head.

“…was a mistake.”

Kaitlyn’s smile slowly faded.

“A mistake?”

“It can never happen again.”

“Why?”

She refused to let him avoid her eyes.

“Because you’re younger than me?”

Cole forced himself to nod.

“You’re too young.”

A bitter laugh escaped Kaitlyn.

“I’m barely younger than you.”

“You weren’t thinking about my age a second ago.”

Every word she spoke chipped away at his resolve.

“Kaitlyn…”

He exhaled slowly.

“This can’t happen.”

“You should get some rest.”

She folded her arms.

“You can’t send me to bed like I’m twelve.”

A faint smile almost appeared on Cole’s face despite himself.

“I can.”

“And I just did.”

“Because you’re acting stubborn.”

She stared at him for several long seconds.

Finally, disappointment replaced the hope in her eyes.

“Good night, Cole.”

She turned and walked toward the apartment without looking back.

Cole remained outside long after the front door closed.

He buried his face in his hands.

“Ryan trusted me.”

“How am I supposed to protect her…”

“…when I’m the one falling for her?”

That night…

Sleep came quickly for Kaitlyn.

But peace never did.

In her dream, she found herself standing beneath the same stars outside the party.

Cole reached for her hand.

This time, he didn’t pull away.

This time, there were no rules.

No guilt.

No Ryan.

Only the two of them.

He smiled at her.

“I’ve been fighting this for too long.”

Kaitlyn felt tears gathering in her eyes.

“So have I.”

He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear before leaning in once more.

Their foreheads rested together.

“I need you,” he whispered.

“I don’t want to keep pretending.”

Kaitlyn closed her eyes as she leaned into his embrace—

“Cole…”

She whispered his name.

“Cole…”

Suddenly—

“Kaitlyn!”

Her eyes flew open.

Morning sunlight streamed through the bedroom window.

She sat upright, breathing hard.

Her cheeks burned with embarrassment.

“It…”

She covered her face with both hands.

“…was just a dream.”

A knock sounded on her bedroom door.

“Katie?”

Cole’s familiar voice came from the hallway.

“Are you okay?”

She froze.

Her heart immediately began racing again.

How was she supposed to face him…

…after dreaming about him all night?

To be continued…
