The moment Tiffany left the office, her carefully controlled expression shattered.
The hallway outside Blood Moon’s Alpha wing was empty, allowing her anger to surface freely.
That stupid orphan.
Selene.
Tiffany’s nails dug into her palms as she replayed the scene.
Jackson had dismissed her.
Dismissed her.
In front of Selene.
No one had ever embarrassed her like that.
Especially not some servant who didn’t even have a wolf.
“If I could bury her alive, I would,” Tiffany muttered.
The thought brought a cruel smile to her face.
Soon enough, she promised herself.
Soon enough.
Meanwhile, inside the office, tension lingered in the air.
Jackson stood near his desk, watching Selene carefully.
She remained where she was, arms at her sides, refusing to meet his gaze.
Most wolves trembled under an Alpha’s stare.
Selene didn’t.
That alone irritated him.
“How long have you been at Blood Moon?”
The question caught her off guard.
“Almost fifteen years.”
Jackson nodded slowly.
Fifteen years.
Longer than many pack members.
Long enough to know the rules.
Long enough to understand hierarchy.
“And in all that time,” he continued, “have we ever let you go hungry?”
Selene remained silent.
“No.”
“Cold?”
“No.”
“Homeless?”
Again, she shook her head.
Jackson spread his hands.
“So what exactly is your problem?”
Her brow furrowed.
“My problem?”
“I’m giving you shelter.”
His voice hardened.
“You’re a packless orphan.”
The words landed exactly where he intended.
Most people would lower their heads in shame.
Most people would apologize.
Most people would thank him.
But Selene wasn’t most people.
She simply stared back.
For the first time, Jackson noticed something unusual.
There was no fear in her eyes.
Only resentment.
Years of it.
Accumulated quietly beneath the surface.
The realization unsettled him.
“You should be grateful.”
Selene laughed.
Actually laughed.
A short, bitter sound.
The reaction stunned him.
“Grateful?”
Her voice trembled.
Not with fear.
With anger.
“I clean your floors.”
“I wash your dishes.”
“I do whatever your pack orders me to do.”
Her eyes flashed.
“And somehow that’s generosity?”
Jackson’s wolf stirred uneasily.
The conversation wasn’t going the way he expected.
“Then tell me something.”
He stepped closer.
“Why won’t you call me Alpha?”
There it was.
The question that had been bothering him.
Again and again.
Every interaction.
Every conversation.
Every command.
She always hesitated.
Just enough for him to notice.
Selene folded her arms.
“I call you Alpha.”
“Eventually.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Not naturally.”
Silence.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then a terrible idea entered Jackson’s mind.
An explanation that instantly irritated him.
A ridiculous explanation.
Yet somehow one that made sense.
“Are you jealous?”
Selene blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Jackson leaned against his desk.
“Is that what this is?”
The words became sharper.
“Do you wish you were Tiffany?”
Selene stared at him.
Confused.
Then horrified.
“You think I want to be Tiffany?”
“Maybe.”
His arrogance made her blood boil.
Maybe because she was exhausted.
Maybe because her eighteenth birthday was approaching.
Maybe because she was simply tired of being treated like dirt.
Whatever the reason, something inside her finally snapped.
“You disgust me.”
The room fell silent.
Jackson froze.
Nobody spoke to him like that.
Nobody.
Especially not servants.
Especially not someone without a wolf.
“What did you say?”
“You heard me.”
Selene’s heart hammered against her ribs.
Every instinct told her to stop.
To apologize.
To back down.
Instead she took another step forward.
“You disgust me.”
The words came easier the second time.
“And you’re not my Alpha.”
A dangerous growl echoed from Jackson’s chest.
The Alpha aura exploded through the room.
Books rattled.
Furniture creaked.
Pressure crashed down around her.
But Selene remained standing.
Jackson’s eyes widened.
How?
Even seasoned wolves struggled against an Alpha’s dominance.
Yet somehow she endured it.
Breathing heavily.
Shaking.
But standing.
Then came the final insult.
“The only A-word you’ll ever be…”
Selene looked him directly in the eye.
“…is asshole.”
For a full second, the world stopped.
Jackson simply stared.
Half furious.
Half shocked.
And beneath it all…
Something else.
Admiration.
The realization disturbed him even more.
A sudden knock interrupted the moment.
Both turned toward the door.
A Beta entered hurriedly.
“Alpha, sorry for interrupting.”
Jackson immediately regained control of himself.
“What is it?”
The Beta swallowed.
“It’s regarding the engagement party.”
“What about it?”
A nervous expression crossed the man’s face.
“The guest list has been finalized.”
Jackson frowned.
“Then why are you bothering me?”
The Beta hesitated.
“Because Alexander Kane just confirmed attendance.”
The office instantly became silent.
Selene had heard the name before.
Everyone had.
Alexander Kane.
The legendary Alpha of Nightwind.
The most powerful Alpha in the country.
Some called him a king.
Others called him a monster.
Either way, everyone respected him.
Even feared him.
Jackson cursed under his breath.
“Shit.”
The Beta nodded.
“He’ll arrive personally.”
Jackson’s expression darkened.
Alexander never attended events he wasn’t interested in.
Which meant he wanted something.
The question was—
What?
Far away, at that exact moment, Alexander stood on a balcony overlooking Nightwind territory.
The moon shone brightly overhead.
His wolf paced restlessly beneath his skin.
Closer.
The feeling was getting stronger.
Every day.
Every hour.
His mate was near.
Not physically.
But close enough for the bond to awaken.
Alexander closed his eyes.
For a split second, he saw a flash of silver eyes.
A young woman standing beneath moonlight.
Lonely.
Defiant.
Broken, yet unbowed.
His wolf growled possessively.
Mine.
Alexander opened his eyes.
A dangerous smile appeared on his face.
“Prepare the convoy.”
His Beta immediately bowed.
“We leave tomorrow?”
Alexander looked toward the distant horizon.
Toward Blood Moon territory.
Toward fate.
“Yes.”
Neither man knew it yet.
But the engagement party would change everything.
And for Selene, it would be the beginning of a truth hidden for fifteen years.
