Selene stood outside Alpha Jackson’s office, her heart pounding.

The summons had come unexpectedly.

Normally, Jackson only called for her when there was work nobody else wanted to do.

Cleaning.

Serving.

Running errands.

The kinds of tasks reserved for someone at the very bottom of the pack hierarchy.

She took a deep breath and raised her hand toward the door.

Then hesitated.

Inside, she heard laughter.

A woman’s laughter.

Tiffany.

Selene lowered her eyes.

She should have known.

Gathering her courage, she pushed the door open.

The moment she stepped inside, the room fell silent.

Jackson looked up immediately.

Tiffany turned as well.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Heat rushed to Selene’s face.

“I—”

Jackson’s expression darkened.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Selene immediately dropped her gaze.

“You asked to see me, Alpha.”

The title felt bitter on her tongue.

Jackson rose from his chair.

His towering frame seemed even larger inside the office.

“You don’t knock?”

His voice carried the unmistakable authority of an Alpha.

The pressure rolled through the room.

Even without a wolf, Selene felt it.

Instinctively, she lowered her head.

“I’m sorry.”

Tiffany crossed her arms.

A cruel smile appeared on her face.

“Was she watching us?”

Selene’s cheeks burned.

“No.”

“Really?” Tiffany stepped closer. “Because it looked like you were.”

The accusation stung.

Not because it was embarrassing.

Because everyone always assumed the worst of her.

No matter what happened, she was the one blamed.

Always.

Jackson’s eyes remained fixed on Selene.

“You will address me as Alpha.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

His wolf growled softly beneath the surface.

The sound surprised even him.

Something about the girl standing before him felt different today.

He couldn’t explain it.

For years she had been nothing more than a servant.

Someone invisible.

Yet lately, every time she entered a room, his attention drifted toward her.

It irritated him.

Annoyed him.

And for reasons he couldn’t understand, his wolf seemed even more unsettled.

Tiffany noticed his distraction immediately.

Her expression tightened.

“Jackson?”

No response.

His eyes remained on Selene.

Tiffany’s stomach twisted.

She hated the way he looked at that girl.

Not with affection.

Not even with interest.

But with curiosity.

And curiosity was dangerous.

Especially for someone like Selene.

A nobody.

An orphan.

A servant.

Tiffany stepped between them.

“Why is she even here?”

Jackson finally blinked.

As though waking from a trance.

Then he spoke.

“Tiffany. Leave us.”

The room froze.

Tiffany laughed nervously.

“Excuse me?”

“I said leave.”

Her smile vanished.

For the first time, genuine hurt flashed across her face.

Normally Jackson indulged her.

Protected her.

Spoiled her.

Yet now he was dismissing her without hesitation.

In favor of a servant.

“You’re choosing her over me?”

Jackson’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

Tiffany stared at him.

Then at Selene.

Hatred flashed in her eyes.

Pure and undisguised.

Selene immediately looked away.

She didn’t want this.

She didn’t want more trouble.

But Tiffany had already made up her mind.

As she stormed toward the door, she stopped beside Selene.

Leaning close enough that only Selene could hear, she whispered,

“You’ll regret this.”

Then she left.

The office door slammed shut behind her.

Silence returned.

An uncomfortable silence.

Selene stood motionless.

Waiting.

Jackson walked toward the large window overlooking the pack grounds.

For several moments, he said nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

“Your eighteenth birthday is in three days.”

Selene’s eyes widened.

How did he know that?

Nobody cared about her birthday.

Nobody remembered.

Yet Jackson knew.

The realization unsettled her.

“Yes, Alpha.”

He turned around slowly.

“Have you felt anything strange?”

She frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Dizziness.”

“No.”

“Dreams?”

Selene hesitated.

Actually…

There had been dreams.

Strange dreams.

Moonlight.

Silver eyes.

A voice calling her name from somewhere deep inside the forest.

But she wasn’t about to tell Jackson that.

“No.”

Jackson studied her face.

His wolf was restless again.

The sensation was becoming impossible to ignore.

Something was changing.

And somehow, Selene was connected to it.

Before he could say anything else, a sudden sharp pain exploded behind Selene’s ribs.

She gasped.

Her knees nearly buckled.

“Selene?”

The pain vanished almost immediately.

But for one terrifying second, she had felt something awakening inside her.

Something alive.

Something powerful.

A heartbeat that wasn’t her own.

Jackson stepped forward instinctively.

His eyes widened.

For the briefest moment—

A faint silver glow flashed inside Selene’s eyes.

Then disappeared.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither understood what they had just witnessed.

But far away, beyond Blood Moon territory, Alpha Alexander suddenly stopped in the middle of a council meeting.

His wolf surged violently inside him.

Mate.

The word echoed through his entire body.

This time louder than ever.

Closer than ever.

And for the first time, Alexander knew with absolute certainty.

His fated mate had finally awakened.

He just didn’t know that she was trapped inside the territory of his future enemy.
