Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad – Chapter 4

“You must be a virgin.”

The words hit Fay like a slap.

For several seconds, she simply stared at Kent Lippert across the interview table.

Had he really just said that?

Inside a state prison?

During an official psychological evaluation?

The man had completely lost his mind.

“What did you just say?”

Kent leaned back comfortably in his chair.

The corner of his mouth lifted.

That infuriating smile again.

The smile of a man who enjoyed chaos.

A man who knew exactly how much trouble he was causing.

“You heard me, Doctor.”

Fay’s pulse spiked.

Every professional instinct she possessed was screaming at her to remain calm.

Unfortunately, Kent Lippert seemed determined to destroy every ounce of that professionalism.

“If you don’t stop this right now,” she warned, standing from her chair, “I’ll scream.”

Kent’s dark eyes sparkled with amusement.

“Oh?”

He tilted his head.

“Do you promise?”

Fay nearly choked.

This man was impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

“Guard!”

She raised her voice toward the door.

Immediately, one of the correctional officers stepped inside.

“What seems to be the problem, Doctor?”

Before Fay could answer, Kent chuckled.

The sound was deep and dangerously confident.

“That’s adorable.”

The guard visibly stiffened.

Then something shocking happened.

The officer looked at Kent.

Not Fay.

Kent.

As if waiting for his permission to speak.

Fay’s stomach dropped.

What the hell?

The guard cleared his throat awkwardly.

“Everything okay here, Mr. Lippert?”

Mr. Lippert?

Not inmate.

Not prisoner.

Mr. Lippert.

Kent waved dismissively.

“We’re fine.”

The guard immediately nodded and left.

The door clicked shut.

Silence filled the room.

Fay stared.

Kent stared back.

Then he smirked.

“Get the fuck out of here, Cowboy.”

The comment had clearly been directed at the guard.

Fay couldn’t believe what she’d just witnessed.

“Did that officer seriously listen to you instead of me?”

Kent shrugged.

“I run this prison, Doc.”

Her jaw nearly hit the floor.

The terrifying part?

She wasn’t entirely sure he was joking.

Pull yourself together.

Fay sat back down and opened her clipboard.

No matter how frustrating he was, she still had a job to do.

“He might be afraid of you,” she said firmly, “but I’m not.”

Kent’s eyebrow lifted.

Interesting.

For the first time all day, she had his full attention.

Fay leaned forward.

“I still determine your chances of early release.”

The room grew quieter.

“So I suggest you cooperate.”

For several seconds, Kent simply studied her.

Then he smiled.

Not mockingly this time.

Almost approvingly.

Like a king observing a soldier brave enough to challenge him.

“Very well, Doctor.”

Fay ignored the strange flutter in her chest.

“Now, Mr. Lippert.”

She flipped to the next page.

“Please describe the actions which resulted in your incarceration.”

A standard question.

Simple.

Professional.

Necessary.

Kent’s gaze slowly drifted downward.

Toward her blouse.

Fay immediately felt self-conscious.

“What are you looking at?”

Kent’s smile widened.

“Your shirt.”

“What about it?”

His eyes darkened.

“It tells me everything.”

Fay looked down.

A button near her collar had come loose during the argument.

Heat flooded her face.

She quickly fixed it.

“My—”

She stopped.

Mortified.

Kent looked far too pleased with himself.

“Mr. Lippert!”

The sharpness in her voice echoed through the room.

His smile only grew.

“I suggest you take this evaluation seriously.”

The Mafia King’s expression remained infuriatingly calm.

“Darling.”

The nickname instantly made her blood pressure rise.

“I couldn’t take you seriously if I tried.”

That was it.

Absolutely it.

Fay slammed her clipboard shut.

The sound echoed through the room.

“No.”

Kent looked amused.

“No?”

“No more games.”

For the first time since entering the prison, Fay stopped reacting emotionally.

Instead, she became cold.

Professional.

Clinical.

The way she’d been trained.

“You’ve had every opportunity to cooperate.”

Kent’s smile faded slightly.

Interesting.

Perhaps he hadn’t expected that.

Fay picked up her evaluation form.

Her pen moved across the page.

Recommendation: Denied.

Release Status: Without Parole.

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Very heavy.

Finally, she signed her name.

“There.”

Kent glanced at the paperwork.

Instead of anger, he laughed.

Actually laughed.

A rich, genuine sound that filled the room.

“You are incredible.”

Fay stood.

“I’m done here.”

She gathered her files and moved toward the door.

The interview was over.

Or so she thought.

“Cowboy.”

Kent’s voice echoed behind her.

The guard immediately entered.

Fay turned in disbelief.

How was he summoning staff like a hotel guest ordering room service?

Kent nodded toward the evaluation.

“Why don’t we tell sweet little Dr. Fay here who determines release dates?”

The guard visibly swallowed.

Then answered.

“You do, King Lippert.”

The room went silent.

Fay froze.

Her heart skipped a beat.

“What?”

The guard avoided her eyes.

Kent slowly rose from his chair.

Even in handcuffs, he somehow looked more powerful than anyone else in the building.

Including the warden.

Including the guards.

Including the state itself.

A chill ran down Fay’s spine.

The realization hit hard.

Kent Lippert wasn’t trapped in this prison.

The prison belonged to him.

Kent stepped closer.

Close enough that she could feel the weight of his presence.

Close enough that her pulse betrayed her.

His dark eyes locked onto hers.

And once again, that dangerous smile appeared.

“I’ll see you on the outside, Doctor.”

Fay lifted her chin.

“We’ll see about that.”

For a moment, neither of them looked away.

Then Kent’s smile widened.

“You can count on it.”

As Fay walked out of the interview room, she told herself she never wanted to see Kent Lippert again.

Deep down, however…

She already knew that wasn’t true.

To be continued…
