Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad – Chapter 5

For the first time in days, Fay was trying not to think about Kent Lippert.

Unfortunately, her brain refused to cooperate.

The prison interview had ended hours ago, yet his voice still echoed inside her head.

You must be a virgin.

Arrogant.

Infuriating.

Impossible.

And somehow…

completely unforgettable.

“Fay!”

A hand waved in front of her face.

She blinked.

The crowded nightclub snapped back into focus.

Colored lights flashed across the dance floor while music thundered through the building.

Across the table sat her older sister, Janeen.

Looking amused.

Very amused.

“There she is,” Janeen laughed. “I was starting to think you’d left your body.”

Fay grabbed her drink.

“I’m listening.”

“Liar.”

Janeen pointed accusingly.

“You’ve been staring into space for five minutes.”

Fay rolled her eyes.

“I’ve had a long week.”

That was the understatement of the century.

Within a few days she had:

Caught her boyfriend cheating.

Learned he had been using her.

Met the most dangerous criminal in America.

And somehow ended up arguing with said criminal inside a prison.

A normal week, really.

Janeen leaned forward.

“So tell me.”

Fay immediately recognized that tone.

Dangerous.

Curious.

The older-sister interrogation tone.

“How are things with that walking red flag, Daniel?”

Fay nearly choked on her drink.

Janeen frowned.

“Wait.”

“Oh no.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

The lie sounded terrible.

Janeen’s eyes narrowed.

“Did you finally meet his family?”

And just like that, another face appeared in Fay’s mind.

Not Daniel.

Kent.

Dark eyes.

Dangerous smile.

Absolute confidence.

Lavender.

Chamomile.

You must be a virgin.

Heat crept into her cheeks.

How had he known?

The question had been haunting her ever since.

Had he guessed?

Observed something?

Or was he simply that good at reading people?

“Earth to Fay.”

Janeen snapped her fingers.

Fay jumped.

“What?”

“You did it again.”

“Did what?”

“Disappear.”

Fay groaned.

This conversation was becoming dangerous.

Fast.

“So?”

Janeen pressed.

“How are things with Daniel?”

The answer should have been simple.

Terrible.

He’s my ex.

He was secretly dating someone else.

Instead, Fay forced a smile.

“They’re fine.”

Janeen looked unconvinced.

“Fine?”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Really good.”

Janeen raised one eyebrow.

“The worst liar in America strikes again.”

Fay sighed.

Her sister knew her too well.

“He’s… sweet.”

That part, at least, had once been true.

Janeen studied her carefully.

Then smirked.

“Oh.”

Fay immediately recognized trouble.

“What?”

“That means you still haven’t slept together.”

Fay nearly spilled her drink.

“Janeen!”

“What?”

The older woman laughed.

“It’s a simple observation.”

Fay crossed her arms.

“So?”

Janeen’s expression softened.

“Nothing’s wrong with that.”

“Good.”

“I just think you deserve to feel wanted.”

The words landed harder than expected.

For a moment, Fay didn’t know what to say.

Because despite everything that had happened with Daniel…

Janeen wasn’t entirely wrong.

Daniel had cared about her.

But had he ever truly desired her?

Or had she simply been convenient?

The thought left an uncomfortable ache in her chest.

Before she could answer, Janeen suddenly froze.

The color drained from her face.

Fay immediately noticed.

“What?”

Janeen’s eyes shifted toward the entrance.

“Dean.”

The single word carried unmistakable fear.

Fay turned.

A large man was pushing through the crowd.

Mid-forties.

Broad shoulders.

Expensive suit.

Mean eyes.

Every instinct Fay possessed disliked him immediately.

“Who’s Dean?”

Janeen looked away.

“My boss.”

Something about her tone felt wrong.

Very wrong.

“I thought he had the night off.”

The panic in Janeen’s voice confirmed Fay’s suspicion.

She was afraid of him.

The realization instantly put Fay on edge.

Dean approached their table.

His smile never reached his eyes.

“Janeen.”

“Hey, boss.”

Janeen attempted a cheerful tone.

It failed miserably.

“We need to talk.”

The words sounded less like a request and more like an order.

“Now.”

Fay sat up straighter.

The hairs on the back of her neck stood up.

Janeen quickly forced another smile.

“Before we go, have you met my little sister?”

Dean’s gaze shifted.

For the first time, he noticed Fay.

The look in his eyes made her uncomfortable.

Very uncomfortable.

“This is Fay.”

Dean barely acknowledged her.

“Nice to meet you.”

His attention immediately returned to Janeen.

“We’re going to the back.”

Janeen swallowed hard.

“Right.”

Something was definitely wrong.

Fay could feel it.

Janeen stood.

“I’ll be right back, sis.”

Her voice sounded strained.

“Just work stuff.”

Fay wasn’t buying it.

Not for a second.

Then Janeen leaned closer.

“So maybe you should head home.”

“What?”

“I’ll catch up with you later.”

The request felt rehearsed.

Like something she’d said before.

Many times.

Too many times.

Dean’s expression darkened.

“Janeen.”

The warning in his voice was unmistakable.

Janeen flinched.

Actually flinched.

Fay’s stomach twisted.

No boss should have that effect on an employee.

Ever.

“Let’s go.”

Dean grabbed Janeen’s arm.

Hard.

Too hard.

Pain flashed across her sister’s face.

Fay was already standing.

“Take your hand off her.”

Dean turned slowly.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What did you say?”

Fay stepped forward.

Every protective instinct she possessed roared to life.

“I said take your hand off my sister.”

Janeen’s eyes widened.

“Fay, don’t—”

“Janeen.”

Dean’s voice sharpened.

“Get in there.”

Fear filled her sister’s face.

“No.”

The answer came out barely above a whisper.

But it was still a refusal.

Dean’s expression darkened.

And Fay suddenly realized this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.

Not even close.

Whatever was waiting in that back room…

Janeen was terrified of it.

And Fay wasn’t about to let her face it alone.

To be continued…
