The stadium roared beneath the Friday night lights.

Thousands of fans filled the stands, their voices merging into one thunderous chant as the Knights clung to an eleven-point lead with only three minutes left on the clock.

“Can quarterback Brett Pierson and the Knights hold on to secure the championship?” the announcer shouted over the deafening noise.

On the sidelines, Maddie Malone adjusted the blue-and-gold pom-poms in her hands. Her heart wasn’t racing because of the game.

Not really.

Tonight was supposed to change her life.

Just hours earlier, Brett had wrapped his arms around her and whispered the words she’d replayed a hundred times in her head.

“After I win this championship tonight, I’m going to marry the hell out of you.”

The memory made her smile.

For years, Brett had been her entire world.

He was the star quarterback.

The golden boy of Westbrook High.

The guy every girl wanted.

And somehow, he had chosen her.

Maddie tightened her grip on her pom-poms as Brett jogged toward the line of scrimmage.

“Let’s go, Brett!” she screamed.

The crowd erupted.

“Green 80! Green 80!”

The ball snapped.

Brett dropped back.

A defender charged.

Another.

But Brett slipped between them effortlessly, launching a perfect spiral downfield.

The stadium exploded.

The Knights were moments away from victory.

Maddie jumped up and down with the other cheerleaders, unable to contain her excitement.

“Brett! Brett! Brett!”

Then she heard it.

A laugh.

Sharp.

Mocking.

Cruel.

Maddie turned and found Veronica Steele standing nearby with a group of girls.

Veronica was beautiful in the way a snake’s scales shimmered before a strike.

Blonde.

Perfectly dressed.

And always looking for someone to tear down.

She smirked as Maddie cheered.

“Wow.”

Maddie frowned.

“What’s so funny?”

Veronica exchanged amused glances with her friends.

“I just think it’s sweet.”

Her voice dripped with fake innocence.

“You and Brett.”

Maddie relaxed slightly.

“What about us?”

Veronica tilted her head.

“The open relationship thing.”

The girls around her burst into laughter.

Maddie’s smile vanished.

“What are you talking about?”

Veronica widened her eyes dramatically.

“Oh.”

“Wait.”

“You don’t know?”

Maddie’s stomach tightened.

“We’re not in an open relationship.”

Veronica’s grin grew wider.

“Really?”

“Because from what I’ve heard, Brett’s been pretty generous lately.”

The words hit harder than they should have.

Maddie felt heat rush to her face.

“That’s not true.”

Veronica took a step closer.

“Then what’s going on tonight?”

Maddie lifted her chin.

Her voice came out stronger than she felt.

“After the game, Brett is proposing to me.”

For a split second, Veronica’s expression changed.

A flicker.

Almost like surprise.

Or anger.

Then it disappeared beneath a cold laugh.

“Wait.”

She looked around dramatically.

“Did everyone hear that?”

The girls immediately gathered closer.

“Our star quarterback is proposing…”

Veronica paused.

“…to the charity case from the orphanage?”

The laughter that followed felt like a slap.

Maddie’s entire body froze.

The word charity case echoed in her ears.

She hated that phrase.

Hated how people whispered it behind her back.

As if being abandoned as a child was somehow her fault.

As if growing up in an orphanage made her less than everyone else.

Her hands clenched into fists.

“What did you just say?”

Veronica’s smile sharpened.

There it was.

The real reason behind the insults.

Jealousy.

Because Brett Pierson belonged to Maddie.

At least for now.

Before Veronica could answer, a deafening roar erupted from the stadium.

“LET’S GO KNIGHTS!”

The crowd exploded as Brett completed another massive play.

The game was nearly over.

The championship was within reach.

And somewhere on that field, the boy Maddie loved was preparing to fulfill a promise that would change both of their lives forever.

At least, that’s what she believed.

She had no idea that tonight was only the beginning of a much bigger story.

One filled with secrets.

Betrayal.

And a love that would be tested far beyond a high school football field.
