The smile on Maddie Malone’s face slowly faded.
The championship game continued around her, but Veronica Steele’s words echoed louder than the crowd.
“Didn’t you grow up in a homeless shelter or something?”
Veronica crossed her arms, looking Maddie up and down with open contempt.
“You wouldn’t even be here if Brett wasn’t paying for your entire life.”
Maddie’s jaw tightened.
“He doesn’t pay for my life.”
“Oh, please.”
Veronica rolled her eyes.
“He practically begged Coach Reynolds to put you on the cheer squad.”
The girls around her snickered.
“He said your dance scholarship wasn’t enough.”
She leaned closer.
“And that you were living in your car.”
The words struck like a punch.
Maddie’s heart skipped.
Living in her car wasn’t exactly a secret.
But it wasn’t something many people knew.
Especially not Veronica.
Which meant…
“Brett told you that?”
For the first time, Veronica looked pleased.
As if she’d found the perfect weapon.
“Oh, he tells me lots of things.”
Maddie felt a knot form in her stomach.
On the field, Brett dropped back for another pass.
The crowd erupted.
Then gasped.
A Dragon defender crushed through the offensive line and slammed Brett to the turf.
The stadium shook.
Meanwhile, Maddie couldn’t take her eyes off Veronica.
“When did he tell you?”
Veronica’s smile widened.
The answer came slowly.
Cruelly.
“As if that’s the important question.”
She tilted her head.
“Maybe you should ask whether he told me before or after he hooked up with me.”
Everything around Maddie went silent.
The cheers.
The announcers.
The game.
Gone.
Only Veronica’s words remained.
“Hooked up with me.”
No.
That couldn’t be true.
Brett loved her.
Didn’t he?
Maddie’s voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Is Brett cheating on me?”
Veronica laughed.
The sound was cold.
Mocking.
“Sharing is caring, Maddie.”
The girls beside her burst into laughter.
Maddie felt sick.
On the field, disaster continued unfolding.
Brett forced another throw.
The pass sailed through the air.
Straight into the hands of a Dragons defender.
INTERCEPTION.
The stadium exploded.
Not with celebration.
With panic.
“What the hell?” someone shouted.
The Knights’ lead was slipping away.
The Dragons were coming alive.
Maddie barely noticed.
Her thoughts were spinning too fast.
Was Veronica lying?
Or had Brett really betrayed her?
The Dragons marched down the field.
Play after play.
Yard after yard.
Then their quarterback, Cameron Carter, rolled left and fired a perfect strike into the end zone.
TOUCHDOWN.
The Dragons closed the gap.
The crowd erupted.
Half cheering.
Half terrified.
Maddie looked toward the field.
Toward Brett.
She needed answers.
Now.
Ignoring the routine, she started moving toward the sideline.
“Brett!”
A hand grabbed her wrist.
Veronica.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”
Maddie yanked her arm back.
“What?”
Veronica smirked.
“Leaving your squad during the game?”
She nodded toward the cheer coach.
“That’s an automatic disqualification.”
Maddie’s stomach dropped.
“No cheer, no pay.”
Veronica’s eyes gleamed.
“Wouldn’t want to end up sleeping in your car again.”
The insult hit hard.
But before Maddie could respond, one of the other cheerleaders stepped forward.
“Ignore her.”
Maddie turned.
The girl offered an encouraging smile.
“She’s just jealous.”
Veronica scoffed.
“Toughen up, Maddie.”
The game wasn’t over.
And neither was the humiliation.
Back on the field, the Knights offense collapsed again.
Three plays.
No progress.
Punt.
The Dragons got the ball back with time for one final drive.
The entire stadium rose to its feet.
The championship would come down to a single play.
“Defense!” the crowd screamed.
“Defense!”
Cameron Carter stood in the shotgun.
Calm.
Focused.
Fearless.
The ball snapped.
Pressure came immediately.
A defender wrapped his arms around Cameron—
But Cameron spun free.
The crowd gasped.
He rolled left.
Looked downfield.
Nobody open.
The clock ticked.
The defense closed in.
Then Cameron tucked the ball and ran.
The fifty.
The forty.
The thirty.
The crowd exploded.
The twenty.
The ten.
One defender remained.
Cameron cut inside.
The defender missed.
Touchdown.
For a split second, the stadium froze.
Then chaos erupted.
“The Dragons win the championship!”
The announcer’s voice thundered through the speakers.
Blue-and-gold fans stared in disbelief.
Red-and-black Dragons fans stormed the sidelines.
The impossible had happened.
The Knights had blown an eleven-point lead.
And Brett Pierson had lost everything.
Maddie’s heart sank as she watched Brett rip off his helmet.
Fury burned across his face.
“Goddammit!”
He slammed the helmet onto the turf.
The championship.
Gone.
The proposal she had dreamed about.
Gone.
The future she thought was waiting for her.
Suddenly uncertain.
Then something even stranger happened.
Instead of looking for Maddie, Brett pushed through the crowd and started running toward the cheerleaders.
Toward Veronica.
Maddie’s pulse stopped.
No.
Please no.
As Brett approached, Veronica’s confident smile returned.
And for the first time all night, Maddie was terrified of what would happen next.
To be continued…
