Maddie felt as if the entire world had stopped spinning.

The stadium lights blurred.

The crowd noise faded into a distant hum.

All she could see was Brett Pierson standing beside Veronica Steele.

Together.

Comfortably.

Like they had done this before.

Like they weren’t even trying to hide it anymore.

Brett looked down at her, irritation written across his face.

“What the hell are you doing on the ground?”

His voice wasn’t concerned.

It was annoyed.

Embarrassed.

As if she were the problem.

“Get up,” he snapped.

“We’re leaving.”

Maddie struggled to her feet.

Her hands trembled.

“Wait…”

Her voice cracked.

“I don’t understand.”

A few hours ago, he had promised to propose.

A few hours ago, she had believed they had a future together.

“Babe,” she whispered. “You were going to propose.”

The moment the words left her mouth, Brett laughed.

Actually laughed.

“Are you out of your damn mind?”

Maddie froze.

The cruelty in his voice felt unfamiliar.

Almost like she had never known him at all.

“Did you not just see us lose the championship?”

His eyes hardened.

“I swear to God, Maddie.”

He shook his head.

“Everything always has to be about you, doesn’t it?”

The accusation hit harder than any insult Veronica had thrown at her.

Because it came from him.

The person she trusted most.

Maddie’s chest tightened.

Her eyes drifted toward Veronica.

The blonde cheerleader stood proudly beside Brett, her arm looped through his.

Like she had already won.

Slowly, Maddie forced herself to ask the question she dreaded most.

“So it’s true?”

Silence.

Then Brett sighed dramatically.

“You and Veronica?”

Veronica smirked.

Brett immediately held up a hand.

“Stop.”

His expression darkened.

“Don’t even try that victim act with me.”

Victim act?

Maddie stared at him in disbelief.

The entire stadium seemed to disappear.

Only Brett’s next words remained.

Cold.

Sharp.

Merciless.

“Do you seriously think a guy like me should be tied down to someone like you?”

The sentence shattered whatever remained of Maddie’s heart.

Around them, Dragons players celebrated their championship victory.

The crowd roared.

Music blasted through the stadium speakers.

But Maddie couldn’t hear any of it.

She could only hear Brett choosing someone else.

Choosing Veronica.

Choosing popularity.

Choosing status.

Over her.

Veronica leaned into Brett’s side.

“Let’s go, baby.”

She flashed Maddie a victorious smile.

“First round’s on me tonight, boys.”

The football players cheered.

Laughing.

Celebrating.

As if Maddie’s humiliation were just another part of the victory party.

Brett threw an arm around Veronica.

“I need to blow off some steam.”

Then he looked directly at Maddie.

Not with love.

Not even with guilt.

Just expectation.

Like she was still there to serve him.

“Hey, Maddie.”

He pointed toward the scattered equipment near the sideline.

“Mind picking up our pom-poms and helmets?”

His teammates burst into laughter.

One of them added,

“And after that, wash my jockstrap too.”

More laughter.

Louder this time.

The cheerleaders giggled.

Nobody defended her.

Nobody stopped them.

Maddie stood completely alone.

The humiliation burned through every inch of her body.

For a moment, she thought she might actually cry.

Then a voice interrupted the laughter.

“Hey, Mads.”

The nickname was unexpected.

Familiar.

Warm.

The laughter slowly died.

Everyone turned.

A tall figure wearing a Dragons jersey had crossed onto the Knights’ sideline.

Number 12.

Cameron Carter.

The quarterback who had just stolen the championship.

The hero of the night.

The guy every sports reporter in the state would be talking about tomorrow morning.

Maddie’s eyes widened.

What was he doing here?

Even Brett looked confused.

Cameron stopped directly in front of her.

His blue eyes studied her face.

Not mockingly.

Not pityingly.

Just… curiously.

Maddie blinked.

“I’m sorry.”

“Do I know you?”

A small smile appeared on Cameron’s lips.

The kind that made half the nearby cheerleaders instantly forget how to breathe.

“Not yet.”

The answer only confused her more.

Cameron glanced around at the stunned crowd.

Then back at Maddie.

His smile widened.

“I hope you will.”

The stadium suddenly seemed very quiet.

Even Brett looked annoyed.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he demanded.

But Cameron ignored him completely.

His attention remained fixed on Maddie.

Then he delivered a sentence nobody saw coming.

A sentence that made Veronica’s smile disappear.

A sentence that made Brett’s jaw tighten.

A sentence that left Maddie speechless.

“I scored that touchdown…”

He paused.

“…for the prettiest girl in this stadium.”

The world seemed to stop again.

Only this time, for a very different reason.

To be continued…
