The entire sideline fell silent.

Nobody could believe what they had just heard.

Cameron Carter—the championship-winning quarterback, the biggest star on the field tonight—had just dedicated his game-winning touchdown to Maddie Malone.

The same Maddie everyone had spent the night mocking.

The same Maddie Brett Pierson had just publicly humiliated.

Veronica’s smile disappeared instantly.

Brett looked even worse.

His face darkened with rage.

“What the hell did you just say?”

Cameron barely glanced at him.

His attention remained on Maddie.

As if nobody else existed.

Maddie’s pulse raced.

There was something strangely familiar about him.

The shape of his smile.

The way he looked at her.

Like he already knew her.

But that was impossible.

Wasn’t it?

“Cameron Carter?”

She whispered the name under her breath.

Why did it sound familiar?

Before she could think further, Brett stepped between them.

Aggressive.

Possessive.

Threatened.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Carter?”

The atmosphere instantly turned hostile.

Brett jabbed a finger toward Cameron.

“Talking to my girl?”

The word girl almost made Maddie laugh.

Funny how he suddenly wanted to claim her after spending the last hour treating her like garbage.

Cameron’s expression hardened.

“First of all,” he said calmly, “don’t talk to her like that.”

The confidence in his voice stunned everyone nearby.

Nobody talked to Brett Pierson that way.

Nobody.

But Cameron didn’t seem intimidated in the slightest.

“And second,” he continued, glancing toward Veronica, “it looked like you were pretty busy with your groupie over there.”

A collective gasp spread through the cheerleaders.

Veronica looked like she had just been slapped.

“Groupie?”

Her voice rose several octaves.

“I am the cheer captain.”

She pointed at herself dramatically.

“And my father is the biggest booster at Central High.”

Cameron nodded.

“Exactly.”

The single word hit harder than any insult.

Several Dragons players started laughing.

Veronica’s face turned crimson.

Brett took a threatening step forward.

His pride had already been destroyed by the championship loss.

Now Cameron was destroying what little dignity he had left.

“Maddie’s mine,” Brett growled.

The words made Maddie’s stomach turn.

Mine?

Where had that attitude been when he was cheating with Veronica?

Brett stepped even closer.

“So keep your hands…”

His gaze dropped.

“…and your balls away from my bitch.”

The insult hung in the air.

For one dangerous second, nobody moved.

Then Cameron smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A warning.

“You trying to go to the hospital?”

The atmosphere exploded.

Brett lunged first.

Cameron met him halfway.

Helmets crashed to the ground.

Players shouted.

Cheerleaders screamed.

The two star quarterbacks slammed into each other as years of ego and rivalry finally boiled over.

Brett threw a punch.

Cameron dodged.

Brett stumbled.

The Dragons players immediately started chanting.

“Loser!”

“Get him, Carter!”

The scene was pure chaos.

Then a thunderous voice cut through the noise.

“BREAK IT UP!”

Everyone froze.

Coach Reynolds stormed onto the field.

His face was red with fury.

The crowd instantly backed away.

The veteran coach looked ready to murder someone.

His eyes locked on Brett first.

“You.”

Brett straightened.

“Coach—”

“Shut up.”

The coach pointed toward the locker room.

“I’ve been around football my whole life.”

His gaze shifted briefly toward Cameron.

“And that kid is the best quarterback I’ve ever seen.”

The statement stunned everyone.

Even Cameron looked surprised.

Brett looked like he had been punched again.

“Coach—”

“I said shut up.”

The coach’s voice echoed across the field.

“You already got your ass kicked once tonight.”

The players nearby tried—and failed—not to laugh.

Coach Reynolds jabbed a finger toward the tunnel.

“Now get back to the locker room.”

Then his eyes dropped toward the mess scattered across the sideline.

Pom-poms.

Equipment bags.

Helmets.

“And while you’re at it, grab some of these bags.”

The laughter grew louder.

Brett’s face turned purple.

But he knew better than to argue.

For once, the star quarterback had no comeback.

Then Coach Reynolds turned toward Veronica.

The smile vanished from her face immediately.

“Young lady.”

His tone was calm.

Too calm.

The dangerous kind.

Veronica swallowed.

“Yes, Coach?”

“Your daddy’s a powerful man, isn’t he?”

Her confidence returned instantly.

“Very.”

“I’m sure he’d be interested to hear that his daughter embarrassed the entire cheer squad tonight.”

The color drained from Veronica’s face.

“What?”

Coach folded his arms.

“You heard me.”

Veronica pointed at Maddie.

“No, she’s the embarrassment!”

“Maddie Malone!”

Coach wasn’t having it.

“Nope.”

He grabbed a nearby equipment bag and tossed it toward Veronica.

“Pick it up.”

Veronica stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“Pick up the bags.”

Another bag landed at her feet.

“And the pom-poms.”

The cheerleaders exchanged nervous glances.

Nobody wanted to be on Coach Reynolds’ bad side.

“Move.”

Veronica looked horrified.

“You can’t be serious.”

Coach pulled out his phone.

“Or I can call your father.”

Silence.

Veronica’s confidence shattered instantly.

The entire cheer squad scrambled to collect the scattered equipment.

Even the girls who had spent all night laughing at Maddie.

As they worked, Veronica shot Maddie a look filled with pure hatred.

The kind of look that promised revenge.

“This isn’t over.”

Her voice was low.

Dangerous.

Then she spat out the word she knew would hurt most.

“Orphan.”

The insult lingered long after Veronica stormed away.

But for the first time all night…

Maddie wasn’t alone.

Because when she looked up, Cameron Carter was still standing there.

Still watching her.

Still protecting her.

And the question that had haunted her since he arrived grew even stronger.

Why?

Why would the most popular quarterback in the state care about a girl he supposedly didn’t know?

And why did it feel like this wasn’t their first meeting at all?

To be continued…
