For the first time that night, the stadium had finally grown quiet.
The celebration had moved elsewhere.
The players were heading toward the locker rooms.
The cheerleaders were cleaning up the aftermath.
And Maddie Malone stood frozen under the bright stadium lights, staring at the stranger who had defended her when nobody else would.
Cameron Carter.
The hero who had just broken her ex-boyfriend’s championship dreams.
The guy who somehow knew her name.
The guy who looked strangely familiar.
Maddie shifted awkwardly, suddenly aware of how ridiculous she must look.
Mascara smeared.
Eyes red.
Heart shattered.
Not exactly the best first impression.
“I’m sorry.”
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Cameron raised an eyebrow.
“For what?”
Maddie glanced around at the mess surrounding them.
“The fight.”
“The drama.”
“The whole scene.”
A weak laugh escaped her lips.
“I think I ruined everyone’s night.”
To her surprise, Cameron smiled.
A genuine smile.
The kind that reached his eyes.
“It’s okay.”
His gaze drifted toward the locker room tunnel where Brett had disappeared.
“Brett’s an asshole.”
The bluntness caught Maddie off guard.
A small laugh escaped her despite everything.
Maybe the first real laugh she’d had all evening.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.
Which somehow made it even stranger.
Finally, Maddie extended her hand.
“I’m Maddie.”
The moment the words left her mouth, she immediately felt stupid.
Of course he knew her name.
He’d already used it.
Cameron’s smile widened.
“I know.”
Heat rushed to her cheeks.
“Right.”
“That was dumb.”
A laugh escaped him.
Not mocking.
Warm.
Comforting.
The kind that made her chest feel unexpectedly lighter.
“So…”
Maddie tilted her head.
“How do you know who I am?”
For a brief second, something changed in Cameron’s expression.
Something emotional.
Something complicated.
But it disappeared so quickly she almost imagined it.
Instead, he offered his hand.
“I’m Cameron Carter.”
Maddie immediately recognized the name.
Who didn’t?
“The Cameron Carter?”
His smile deepened.
“The one and only.”
“The legendary Heisman winner?”
“That’s what they keep calling me.”
Despite herself, Maddie laughed again.
The guy standing in front of her wasn’t acting like a football superstar.
If anything, he seemed more nervous than she was.
And that only made her curiosity grow stronger.
She studied his face.
The sharp jawline.
The blue eyes.
The familiar smile.
The strange feeling returned.
Like she had seen him somewhere before.
Somewhere important.
Somewhere she couldn’t quite remember.
“Have we met before?”
The question escaped before she could stop it.
Cameron’s entire body froze.
For a moment, hope flashed across his face.
Raw.
Powerful.
Almost painful.
“Maddie…”
His voice softened.
“I think that—”
A loud shout interrupted him.
“Hurry the hell up!”
The voice came from across the field.
Several Dragons players were waving toward Cameron.
The team bus was preparing to leave.
Reality crashed back into the moment.
Maddie looked toward the parking lot.
Her own problems suddenly returned.
Her car.
Her job.
Her future.
Everything waiting beyond the stadium.
She forced herself to smile.
“I should go.”
Something inside Cameron seemed to deflate.
As though he had waited years for this conversation and wasn’t ready for it to end.
Before Maddie turned away, Cameron reached into his jacket pocket.
“Wait.”
He held out a small object.
A silver football-shaped keychain.
Simple.
Old.
Well-worn.
Maddie looked confused.
“You should keep this.”
She hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.”
Their fingers brushed briefly as she accepted it.
A strange feeling rushed through her chest.
Warm.
Comforting.
Familiar.
But before she could understand why, the feeling disappeared.
“Thank you.”
She smiled softly.
“And…”
Her voice caught.
“Thank you for helping me tonight.”
Cameron looked at her as if she had no idea what she was thanking him for.
As if helping her was the most natural thing in the world.
“You don’t have to thank me.”
Maddie offered one last smile before turning toward the parking lot.
She walked away slowly.
The silver keychain dangling from her fingers.
The mystery of Cameron Carter lingering in her mind.
Behind her, Cameron remained standing beneath the stadium lights.
Watching her leave.
Just like he had once watched her disappear years ago.
His hand tightened into a fist.
Emotion filled his eyes.
Relief.
Gratitude.
And something dangerously close to love.
At last, he whispered the words he’d been waiting years to say.
“I finally found you, Maddie.”
The wind carried his voice away.
She never heard him.
Cameron smiled sadly.
“It’s going to be alright now.”
His eyes followed her until she vanished into the darkness.
“Even if you don’t remember me.”
And for the first time, viewers were left with a question far bigger than Brett’s betrayal.
Who exactly was Cameron Carter to Maddie Malone?
And what forgotten promise connected them long before football, heartbreak, and high school ever entered their lives?
To be continued..
