Jocelyn West stood silently in the middle of her son’s living room, enduring yet another wave of humiliation.
Stacy Smith looked at her as if she were something unpleasant dragged in from the street.
“My family is about to sign a deal with the Astor Group,” Stacy announced proudly.
The name alone carried enormous weight.
The Astor Group was one of the most powerful corporations in the country, owned by billionaire Ray Astor himself.
Stacy’s eyes sparkled with greed.
“Once the deal is finalized, we’ll be joining the one percent of the one percent.”
She tossed her hair over her shoulder.
“And people like us don’t need help from some scruffy old hag.”
The insult landed heavily.
Jocelyn lowered her gaze.
Her worn coat, faded shoes, and trembling hands suddenly seemed even more obvious under Stacy’s mocking stare.
“We’ll be hiring a professional maid.”
Stacy pointed toward the door.
“So get out.”
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked deeply uncomfortable.
“Mom…”
For a moment, it seemed like he wanted to defend her.
But one glance from Stacy was enough to silence him.
The disappointment in Jocelyn’s heart was worse than the insults.
After all, she had spent years raising Ethan alone.
Now, when she needed support the most, he couldn’t even stand up for her.
Still, she forced a smile.
“No, no. I understand.”
Her voice remained gentle despite the pain.
“I don’t want to become a burden on your marriage.”
She picked up her small suitcase.
“I’ll just go.”
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
“But Mom, you just quit your job.”
His voice was filled with concern.
“Where are you going to stay?”
Jocelyn patted his hand reassuringly.
“Don’t worry about me.”
The truth was she had no real plan.
No job.
No savings.
No home.
But she refused to let her son see how frightened she truly felt.
“I’ll go back to my hometown.”
She smiled softly.
“I’ll be fine.”
Stacy rolled her eyes.
“Wherever you end up, I hope it’s far, far away from here.”
The cruelty of the words stunned even Ethan.
“Stacy…”
“Go.”
The single word echoed through the house.
Jocelyn swallowed the lump in her throat.
Without another argument, she turned and walked toward the door.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
As she crossed the front yard, she couldn’t stop herself from glancing back one final time.
The home she had hoped would welcome her.
The family she had sacrificed everything for.
Neither belonged to her anymore.
The front door closed behind her.
And just like that, she was alone.
A middle-aged woman carrying a suitcase and nowhere to go.
The afternoon wind blew through the street as Jocelyn slowly walked away.
She wondered if returning to her hometown was truly the right choice.
Perhaps fate had something else planned.
Suddenly, several black luxury vehicles pulled up beside the curb.
The doors opened in perfect unison.
A group of professionally dressed men stepped out.
Jocelyn froze.
They walked directly toward her.
For a brief moment, she worried she had somehow gotten into trouble.
Then the man in front respectfully bowed.
“Ms. West.”
Jocelyn blinked in confusion.
“Yes?”
The man offered a polite smile.
“We’ve been sent to pick you up.”
Her eyes widened.
“Pick me up?”
She had no idea who these people were.
But judging by the expensive cars, tailored suits, and respectful attitude, whoever had sent them was someone incredibly powerful.
And somewhere across the city, billionaire Ray Astor was already preparing a plan that would bring Jocelyn West back into his life—and into his daughter’s.
Neither of them knew it yet.
But their destinies were about to collide.
