Jocelyn West stood nervously outside her son’s luxury townhouse, clutching a thermal bag tightly against her chest.
A smile tugged at her lips.
It had been weeks since she’d last seen her son, Ethan, and his newborn baby. Ever since losing her job, she had finally found time to visit them.
Maybe, she thought, they could use a little help.
The front door opened.
“Mom?” Ethan looked surprised. “What are you doing here?”
Jocelyn’s eyes immediately brightened.
“How’s the baby? And your wife?”
“They’re good.”
Before Ethan could say anything else, a sharp voice cut through the air.
“Stop right there!”
Stacy Smith appeared in the hallway, her designer heels clicking against the marble floor.
The moment she saw Jocelyn, her expression turned cold.
“What are you doing here?”
Jocelyn swallowed nervously.
“I just thought you two might need an extra hand with Caleb. I can help with the baby while you’re resting.”
Stacy let out a mocking laugh.
“Help?”
She crossed her arms.
“What kind of help could a washed-up old woman possibly offer?”
The words hit like a slap.
Jocelyn lowered her eyes but forced herself to remain polite.
“I may not come from money like you, but I’m hardworking.”
Unfortunately, Stacy wasn’t interested in kindness.
“I don’t need an uneducated, uncivilized woman in my house taking care of my son.”
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Stacy, don’t talk to my mother like that.”
“Don’t talk back to me.”
Her glare immediately silenced him.
“I would never have married you if you hadn’t gotten me pregnant.”
The room fell silent.
Jocelyn felt her heart ache for her son.
“It’s okay,” she whispered softly.
She had spent her whole life protecting Ethan. Even now, she couldn’t bear to cause trouble between him and his wife.
Trying to change the subject, she carefully lifted the thermal bag.
“I brought something for you both.”
Her eyes lit up hopefully.
“Truffle lobster chowder from Seafood Sunrise.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
That restaurant was famous throughout the city—and outrageously expensive.
“I know how much you like it,” Jocelyn said shyly. “You should eat it while it’s still hot.”
For a moment, Ethan was speechless.
He knew his mother could barely afford rent these days.
The soup must have cost her a fortune.
But before he could thank her, Stacy snatched the bag.
“Seafood Sunrise?”
She scoffed.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Her voice dripped with contempt.
“You couldn’t even afford an appetizer there, let alone their most expensive soup.”
Jocelyn’s fingers tightened.
“I saved for an entire month to buy it.”
“Yeah, right.”
Stacy rolled her eyes dramatically.
“You probably dug it out of a dumpster behind the restaurant.”
A cruel smile appeared on her lips.
“I’d probably get rabies if I ate that.”
The color drained from Jocelyn’s face.
Even Ethan looked horrified.
“Stacy, cut my mom some slack. She came here to help.”
But Stacy ignored him completely.
She lifted the heavy bag and turned toward the trash can.
“Oh, wait,” she said sarcastically.
“That’s pretty heavy.”
Jocelyn’s eyes widened in panic.
“I’ll take it!”
For one hopeful second, she thought Stacy had changed her mind.
Instead, Stacy smirked.
“You think I’m helping?”
She raised the bag over the garbage bin.
“I’m throwing this out.”
Jocelyn froze.
A month’s worth of savings.
A mother’s love.
A desperate attempt to stay connected to her family.
All of it was about to be tossed away like garbage.
Standing there humiliated and unwanted, Jocelyn finally realized a painful truth.
She no longer had a place in her son’s home.
And with no job, no family willing to stand by her, and nowhere else to go, she found herself completely alone.
Little did she know, fate was already preparing an unexpected encounter—one that would soon change her life forever.
