“Miss Astor called,” the man reported nervously. “She was crying.”

“Who made my daughter cry?”

When he arrived at the Astor mansion, he found seven-year-old Violet sitting alone on the couch, her eyes red and swollen from crying.

“Violet.”
The little girl looked up and ran into his arms.
“Dad!”
Ray knelt beside her and gently wiped away her tears.
“What happened? Tell me who upset you.”

“It’s Jocelyn…”
“Your maid?” Ray frowned.

“What did she do?”

“She quit.”

“Sweetheart, she’s just a maid. I’ll hire a new one before the end of the day.”
But Violet immediately shook her head.
“No!”
Tears filled her eyes again.
“She’s not just a maid.”
Ray froze.
Violet clutched his sleeve tightly.
“She’s patient. She always takes care of me.”
Her small voice grew softer.
“She’s like the mother I’ve never had.”
The words struck Ray harder than any business crisis ever could.
For years, he had devoted himself to building an empire while raising Violet alone. He had given her everything money could buy.
Everything except a mother.
Seeing his daughter so heartbroken, guilt crept into his chest.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
He pulled her into his arms.
“What can Dad do to make things better?”

“Jocelyn is single.”

“And?”

“You can marry her.”
