Jocelyn West stared at the line of luxury vehicles parked beside the curb.
“For me?” she asked, completely bewildered.
The lead driver nodded respectfully.
“Yes, Ms. West.”
Jocelyn tightened her grip on her suitcase.
“May I ask who sent you?”
The answer came immediately.
“Miss Violet Astor.”
Jocelyn blinked.
Violet?
Her former employer’s daughter?
The sweet little girl she had cared for for years?
The driver smiled.
“Miss Astor arranged a blind date for you. We’ve been instructed to escort you there.”
Jocelyn nearly dropped her suitcase.
“A blind date?”
Her face turned bright red.
The idea seemed absurd.
Especially after the humiliating day she’d just endured.
Meanwhile, across town, another reluctant participant was having a conversation of his own.
“Dad, please.”
Violet Astor folded her arms stubbornly.
“You have to meet her.”
Ray Astor sighed.
His daughter had been relentlessly pushing this plan ever since Jocelyn left.
“Violet, you’re asking me to marry your former nanny.”
“Exactly.”
Ray rubbed his temples.
“You’re kidding, right?”
Violet wasn’t amused.
“Dad, you’re the richest man in California.”
She pointed accusingly at him.
“When are you going to take your foot off the gas and start living your life?”
Ray couldn’t help smiling.
Most people begged him for money or favors.
Only Violet demanded he find happiness.
“You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Just meet her.”
Her expression softened.
“One time.”
Ray hesitated.
Then he saw the hope in his daughter’s eyes.
Finally, he surrendered.
“Fine.”
Violet squealed with excitement.
“I’ll meet her once.”
She immediately threw her arms around him.
“Thank you, Dad!”
As soon as Violet left the room, Ray’s smile disappeared.
His business instincts took over.
He had seen countless women throw themselves at wealthy men.
How could he know whether Jocelyn was any different?
A plan quickly formed in his mind.
“I’ll hide my identity.”
His eyes narrowed thoughtfully.
“If she’s a gold digger, she’ll expose herself.”
That evening, Ray traded his tailored designer suit for simple work clothes.
No luxury watch.
No expensive car.
No billionaire image.
Tonight, he would be nothing more than an ordinary construction worker.
When Jocelyn arrived at the restaurant, she felt nervous.
The private room looked far more elegant than any place she would normally visit.
Before she could sit down, a man stepped forward and pulled out her chair.
“Here, let me help you.”
Jocelyn looked up.
The stranger was tall, handsome, and surprisingly polite.
His warm smile instantly put her at ease.
“Oh.”
She sat down awkwardly.
“Thank you.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Jocelyn offered an apologetic smile.
“Sorry to ask you to meet me on such short notice.”
Ray studied her carefully.
There was no arrogance.
No greed.
Just genuine embarrassment.
“Oh, it’s perfectly fine,” he replied.
Jocelyn relaxed slightly.
“Violet always talked about setting me up with someone someday.”
She laughed softly.
“I guess that’s you.”
The mention of Violet immediately softened Ray’s expression.
His daughter had clearly chosen someone special.
“Thank you for sending the car, by the way,” Jocelyn continued.
“That was very thoughtful.”
Ray’s eyes narrowed slightly.
There it is.
The car.
The luxury vehicles.
Maybe that’s what attracted her.
Perhaps she was exactly what he suspected.
He decided to test her.
“Actually…”
He leaned back in his chair.
“That wasn’t my car.”
Jocelyn blinked.
“It wasn’t?”
Ray shook his head.
“I’m just a construction worker.”
The room became quiet.
“I make about twenty-five dollars an hour.”
He carefully watched her reaction.
Most women would lose interest immediately.
Especially after arriving in a convoy of luxury vehicles.
Would Jocelyn’s attitude change?
Would disappointment appear in her eyes?
Or would she surprise him?
Neither of them realized that this simple conversation was the first step toward a marriage neither had expected—and a love story that would change both their lives forever.
