Ray Astor sat across from Jocelyn West, quietly studying her reaction.
Most women would have shown disappointment by now.
After all, he’d just confessed that he wasn’t a billionaire, a CEO, or even a successful businessman.
In her eyes, he should have been nothing more than an ordinary construction worker earning twenty-five dollars an hour.
Instead, Jocelyn smiled.
“I don’t mind.”
The answer caught Ray off guard.
Jocelyn folded her hands neatly on the table.
“I’m a blue-collar woman myself.”
There wasn’t a trace of embarrassment in her voice.
“I spent years working as a maid.”
A shadow briefly crossed her face.
“Until my son got married.”
Ray noticed it immediately.
The pain.
The loneliness.
The quiet heartbreak she was trying so hard to hide.
But she quickly forced a smile.
“At this point in my life, I’m more interested in finding personal happiness.”
Ray felt something unexpected stir inside him.
Most people spent their lives chasing wealth.
Jocelyn simply wanted peace.
Still, he wasn’t ready to abandon his test.
“Well,” he said carefully, “my place is pretty small.”
He shrugged casually.
“It’s definitely not a mansion.”
Jocelyn laughed softly.
“I’ve never known what it’s like to have money.”
Her eyes were calm and sincere.
“I don’t want a mansion.”
The answer was immediate.
Natural.
Unforced.
For the first time that evening, Ray found himself questioning his assumptions.
Maybe Violet had been right about her all along.
Maybe Jocelyn wasn’t interested in money at all.
But if that was true…
Why did he suddenly feel relieved?
The realization made him uncomfortable.
He had come here to investigate her.
Not to become interested in her.
Wanting to regain control of the conversation, Ray cleared his throat.
“Actually…”
Jocelyn looked up.
Ray forced a polite smile.
“I’m not really looking for marriage right now.”
The words sounded harsher than he intended.
For a brief moment, disappointment flickered across Jocelyn’s face.
Ray immediately regretted it.
Fortunately, she recovered quickly.
“That’s okay.”
He relaxed slightly.
“I’m really glad I met you.”
The sincerity in his voice surprised even himself.
“Why don’t we just consider this dinner between friends?”
Jocelyn smiled warmly.
“That sounds perfect.”
Ray picked up the menu and pushed it toward her.
“Order whatever you want.”
He flashed a friendly smile.
“My treat.”
Jocelyn nodded gratefully.
But the moment she opened the menu, her eyes widened.
The prices nearly gave her a heart attack.
A single dessert cost more than her weekly grocery budget.
One steak was worth several days of wages.
She discreetly swallowed.
This wasn’t a restaurant.
It was daylight robbery.
Meanwhile, Ray watched her carefully.
Would she order the most expensive items?
Would she take advantage of his generosity?
Instead, Jocelyn quickly closed the menu.
“No.”
Ray blinked.
“No?”
A slightly embarrassed smile appeared on her face.
“Actually…”
She hesitated.
Then she gathered her courage.
“Would you like to come back to my place instead?”
Ray froze.
Jocelyn brightened immediately.
“I can cook dinner.”
Her eyes sparkled with confidence.
“You’re going to love it.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Ray stared at the woman sitting across from him.
Most people wanted luxury restaurants.
Expensive wine.
Five-star experiences.
Jocelyn wanted to cook a homemade meal.
The contrast was so refreshing that he couldn’t help smiling.
Perhaps this date wasn’t turning out the way either of them had expected.
And perhaps, for the first time in years, Ray Astor was actually looking forward to what came next.
