Jocelyn West’s small apartment was warm with the smell of home-cooked food.
For Ray Astor, it felt like stepping into another world.
No luxury chandeliers. No marble floors. No staff silently waiting in the background.
Just a simple kitchen… and a woman who seemed completely at peace inside it.
She placed a steaming bowl of beef stew on the table.
“Beef stew with carrots and potatoes,” Jocelyn said gently.
Ray leaned forward, clearly impressed.
“You aren’t kidding, Jocelyn. What a treat.”
He took his first bite—and paused.
Something about it hit differently.
Not just the flavor.
But the feeling behind it.
“Nothing beats a home-cooked meal,” he admitted.
Jocelyn smiled softly.
“I’m glad you like it.”
Ray nodded, almost amused at himself.
“I love it.”
For a man who dined in five-star restaurants and attended elite galas, the words came surprisingly easily.
Jocelyn relaxed a little more, her eyes brightening.
“Cornbread’s ready. I’ll go get it.”
Ray watched her disappear into the kitchen.
“Cornbread…” he murmured.
Something about the word stirred a distant memory.
“My grandmother used to make it for me when I was a child.”
His voice softened before he even realized it.
Jocelyn returned with a basket of warm cornbread, placing it carefully on the table.
The aroma filled the room instantly.
Ray reached out quickly.
Too quickly.
The moment his fingers touched the hot bread—
“Ah—!”
He jerked his hand back.
“Hot.”
Jocelyn’s eyes widened.
“Oh my god. I’m so sorry—I should have warned you!”
She immediately reached for his hand, checking if he was okay.
Her touch was gentle.
Careful.
Without hesitation, she guided his hand toward a bowl of cool water nearby.
“That’s my fault,” she said softly. “I should’ve reminded you.”
Ray exhaled, still surprised by the sudden sting.
But what surprised him more… was her reaction.
Not panic.
Not annoyance.
Just immediate care.
He let out a small laugh, shaking his head.
“You’re like a little kid—just so eager for the first bite.”
Jocelyn blinked.
Then smiled faintly, slightly embarrassed.
Ray dipped his hand again, and Jocelyn instinctively adjusted the water temperature and gently held his wrist steady.
After a moment, he tested his fingers.
“How does it feel now?”
Ray looked at her.
Then at his hand.
“Much better,” he said quietly.
A pause settled between them.
Not awkward.
Just… warm.
For the first time, Ray Astor wasn’t thinking about business, suspicion, or tests of character.
He was simply sitting across from a woman who made him feel unexpectedly at ease.
And somewhere deep inside, a question he had been avoiding began to surface again—
Was this really just a dinner…
Or the beginning of something neither of them was ready for?
