Chapter 3 – The Party Everyone Was Waiting For

Cole stared at Kaitlyn for several long seconds.

She had crossed her arms, chin lifted defiantly, waiting for his answer.

“If I go to the party wearing this…”

She took one slow step closer.

“…what exactly are you going to do?”

Cole’s throat tightened.

Too close.

Way too close.

He could smell the faint scent of vanilla perfume mixed with the shampoo she’d always used.

“Say something.”

Anything.

Instead, the only thing that came out was—

“Kaitlyn…”

His voice dropped.

“I need you to be a good girl…”

“…and go change.”

A mischievous smile spread across her face.

“Oh?”

“And what will you give me if I do?”

Cole blinked.

“What?”

She leaned against the doorway, clearly enjoying his discomfort.

“If I change…”

“What do I get?”

He folded his arms, pretending not to be affected.

“You get to leave the apartment.”

She laughed.

“That’s not much of a reward.”

Then her eyes sparkled with playful mischief.

“I actually own another dress.”

“It’s even shorter than this one.”

She tilted her head innocently.

“Do you want to watch me change into that instead?”

Cole nearly choked.

“Kaitlyn.”

She grinned.

“I’ll take that as a no.”

Before he could stop her, she grabbed her purse.

“I’m going to the party.”

She walked toward the door without another glance.

“Don’t wait up.”

The apartment door clicked shut.

Silence filled the room.

Cole ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

“What has gotten into her?”

No…

The better question was—

“What has gotten into me?”

Music pounded through the fraternity house long before Kaitlyn arrived.

The front lawn was already packed with students.

Freshmen.

Sophomores.

Upperclassmen.

Everyone seemed to know everyone.

Inside, conversations centered around one person.

“Do you think Cole Hart is actually coming tonight?”

A blonde girl adjusted her makeup in her phone camera.

“No chance.”

Her friend shrugged.

“He’s a graduate student.”

“He’d never waste time at some freshman party.”

“Then why did I spend an hour getting ready?” another girl complained dramatically.

Across the room, a group of guys laughed.

“Seriously?”

“You don’t know who Cole Hart is?”

The freshman beside them shook his head.

“No.”

One of them whistled.

“Man, where have you been?”

“Cole’s basically campus royalty.”

“Top of his class.”

“Captain of the research team.”

“Built like he lives in the gym.”

“And every girl on campus has a crush on him.”

“The guy’s the complete package.”

Someone lowered their voice.

“But I heard something interesting.”

“What?”

“They say he just moved in with a freshman girl.”

“No way.”

“Seriously?”

“Who is she?”

Before anyone could answer…

The front door opened.

Conversation stopped.

Every head turned.

Kaitlyn stepped inside.

The black dress shimmered beneath the lights.

Her long hair framed her face in soft waves, and confidence replaced the heartbreak she’d worn only hours earlier.

The room collectively forgot how to breathe.

“Damn…”

“Who is she?”

“Is she a freshman?”

“I’ve never seen her before.”

“I thought they said Cole’s roommate was cute…”

“Cute?”

“She’s gorgeous.”

Whispers followed her through the crowd.

Kaitlyn tried to ignore them.

Tonight wasn’t about impressing anyone.

It was about reminding herself she was worth more than Brent had made her believe.

Then she saw him.

Brent.

Standing near the drinks table.

His smile disappeared the instant he recognized her.

“What…”

His eyes widened.

“…Kaitlyn?”

Beside him, Maddy looked equally stunned.

The confident girl who had dumped a milkshake over Kaitlyn only hours earlier now stared in disbelief.

“She cleaned up…”

One of Maddy’s friends whispered.

“…really well.”

Brent couldn’t stop staring.

This wasn’t the insecure girl he’d thrown out of the apartment.

This woman looked confident.

Beautiful.

Untouchable.

A sharp pang of regret twisted in his chest.

“Did I really let her go?”

Across the room, the whispers grew louder.

“That’s the girl living with Cole Hart.”

“Seriously?”

“No wonder everyone’s talking about her.”

Maddy’s expression darkened.

“She’s already living with another guy?”

Brent clenched his jaw.

“She moved on that fast?”

Neither of them knew the truth.

Kaitlyn wasn’t trying to replace Brent.

She was simply trying to survive.

But rumors had a way of creating stories far more exciting than reality.

Just as another wave of whispers spread through the party…

The front door opened once again.

Several girls gasped simultaneously.

Someone whispered excitedly,

“No way…”

“He actually came.”

To be continued…
