Chapter 5 – You’re Not Taking Her
The music was louder than ever.
Lights flashed across the crowded house as students laughed, danced, and shouted over one another.
But Kaitlyn barely heard any of it.
Her vision blurred.
The floor seemed to tilt beneath her feet.
Lydia frowned as she caught Kaitlyn swaying.
“Hey… are you okay?”
Kaitlyn forced a weak smile.
“I think…”
She pressed a hand against her temple.
“…that drink hit me harder than I expected.”
Her voice sounded distant, even to herself.
“I just need some water.”
“And maybe the bathroom.”
Lydia pointed down the hallway.
“Second door on the left.”
“Thanks.”
Kaitlyn steadied herself against the wall before disappearing into the hallway.
Neither of them noticed Brent quietly following behind.
Inside the bathroom, Kaitlyn splashed cold water across her face.
The icy droplets offered only a moment of relief.
“What’s happening to me?”
“I’ve barely had anything to drink…”
She stared at her reflection.
Her cheeks were flushed.
Her breathing felt uneven.
Something wasn’t right.
Before she could gather her thoughts—
The bathroom door swung open.
Kaitlyn jumped.
“Someone’s in here!”
Brent stepped inside anyway and closed the door behind him.
His smile made her stomach turn.
“Brent?”
“What are you doing?”
He leaned casually against the door.
“I just wanted to check if you were okay.”
His eyes swept over her unsteady posture.
“You look like you’re having a rough night.”
“I’m fine.”
She took a cautious step backward.
“Please leave.”
Instead of moving, Brent took one step closer.
“Not yet.”
“I think we still have something to settle.”
Kaitlyn frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Brent laughed bitterly.
“We dated for years.”
“I waited.”
“I respected your boundaries.”
“But now we’re in college.”
His expression hardened.
“You owe me.”
Kaitlyn stared at him in disbelief.
“I owe you… what?”
“My first time.”
The words echoed through the room.
For a heartbeat, Kaitlyn wondered if she’d heard him wrong.
Then anger replaced her confusion.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
“My body has never belonged to you.”
“It never will.”
She pointed toward the door.
“Get out.”
“Now.”
Brent’s face darkened.
“You’ll change your mind.”
“No.”
Her voice shook, but her eyes remained steady.
“I already have.”
“You don’t get to decide anything about me.”
For the first time since their breakup, Brent realized the timid girl he used to manipulate was gone.
Standing before him was someone who wasn’t afraid to tell him no.
At that same moment…
The front door of the fraternity house slammed open.
Conversation throughout the room stopped.
Students turned toward the entrance.
A tall figure stepped inside.
Dark hair.
Broad shoulders.
Sharp eyes scanning the room with unmistakable urgency.
Someone whispered in disbelief.
“Is that…”
“Cole Hart?”
Another student laughed nervously.
“No way.”
“The Cole Hart?”
“The hottest guy on campus?”
“What is he doing at a freshman party?”
Every eye followed him as he walked through the crowd without slowing down.
A sophomore finally called out,
“Hey, Cole!”
“What brings you here?”
Cole didn’t bother with small talk.
His jaw was tight.
His expression colder than anyone had ever seen.
“Good.”
His voice carried across the room.
“Now that I have everyone’s attention…”
He looked around the packed house.
“I’m looking for someone.”
The room fell completely silent.
“Kaitlyn Sinclair.”
No one laughed.
No one spoke.
Some students exchanged uneasy glances.
Because the way Cole Hart said her name…
It didn’t sound like he was looking for a date.
It sounded like he was preparing for a fight.
And somewhere down the hallway…
Behind a locked bathroom door…
Kaitlyn still had no idea that the one person she’d secretly loved for years had come crashing into the party…
Just to find her.
To be continued…
