After the crowd dispersed, Selene remained kneeling on the cold stone floor.
Broken glass glittered around her like tiny shards of ice. The sting on her cheek from Tiffany’s slap had not faded. Neither had the humiliation.
The pack members barely spared her a glance as they walked away. To them, she was invisible—a servant without a wolf, an orphan without a family, a girl who belonged nowhere.
Slowly, Selene gathered the shattered pieces of the glass.
“One day,” she whispered, “I’ll leave this place.”
The words felt foolish the moment they left her lips.
Leave?
How could she leave?
Jackson was right. She wasn’t eighteen yet. She had never shifted. Without a wolf, she couldn’t survive as a rogue.
A cold wind swept through the courtyard.
Selene carried the broken tray back toward the servant quarters. The moon hung high above the Bloodmoon Pack territory, bright and impossibly distant.
For a moment, she imagined what freedom would feel like.
No orders.
No insults.
No Tiffany.
No Jackson.
Just trees, rivers, and silence.
A life where nobody looked at her with disgust.
That night, after finishing every task assigned to her, Selene slipped away into the woods.
The forest had always been her refuge.
She walked deeper and deeper between the towering pines until the sounds of the pack disappeared.
Only then did she sit beside a small stream.
The moonlight danced across the water.
Selene wrapped her arms around her knees.
“My eighteenth birthday is only three days away,” she murmured.
Three days.
Three days until everything changed.
Or nothing changed at all.
The possibility terrified her.
Most werewolves received their wolves by eighteen. Yet everyone already believed Selene was different.
Broken.
Defective.
Worthless.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
“Moon Goddess,” she prayed once more, “please hear me.”
The forest suddenly grew silent.
No wind.
No insects.
Nothing.
Selene opened her eyes.
A strange sensation spread through her chest.
Warm.
Gentle.
Almost like a heartbeat that wasn’t her own.
She stood quickly.
“Hello?”
No answer.
Yet the feeling remained.
Something was watching her.
Not with hostility.
With curiosity.
A silver light flickered between the trees.
Selene took a cautious step forward.
Then another.
The light vanished.
Just like that.
Gone.
Her heart pounded wildly.
Had she imagined it?
Or had the Moon Goddess finally answered?
Far away, beyond the borders of Bloodmoon territory, another wolf suddenly lifted his head.
A powerful Alpha.
One whose scent alone could silence an entire pack.
His golden eyes narrowed toward the distant moon.
For the first time in years, he felt something impossible.
A pull.
A connection.
A call.
And somewhere deep within him, his wolf growled a single word.
“Mate.”
Neither of them knew it yet.
But fate had already begun moving the pieces into place.
