The championship party was in full swing.
Music blasted through the crowded sports bar.
Players laughed.
Glasses clinked.
The Dragons celebrated their victory while the defeated Knights tried to drown their disappointment in alcohol.
And in the middle of it all sat Maddie Malone.
Alone.
Invisible.
Exactly where Brett Pierson seemed to want her.
“Put those down.”
Brett shoved a tray of empty glasses toward her without even looking up.
“Go get another round.”
His teammates immediately cheered.
“Yeah!”
“That’s our girl!”
Maddie forced a smile.
Her stomach growled painfully.
She hadn’t eaten since morning.
The entire day had been consumed by the game, Brett’s betrayal, and the emotional storm that followed.
“Brett,” she said softly.
“I haven’t eaten anything all day.”
For a brief second, she hoped he might show some concern.
Instead, he rolled his eyes.
“Then eat later.”
His expression hardened.
“Just go get the damn beers, Maddie.”
The table erupted in laughter.
Maddie lowered her eyes and grabbed the tray.
Humiliation had become so normal that part of her barely reacted anymore.
At the bar, she quietly ordered.
“Three IPAs, please.”
Behind her, Brett and his teammates continued drinking and bragging.
One of the players leaned toward him.
“Yo, B.”
“How’d you get Maddie so obsessed with you?”
More laughter followed.
Another teammate shook his head.
“Seriously.”
“I can’t believe she stayed with you after everyone saw you kissing Veronica.”
Maddie froze.
The bartender continued pouring drinks, but she couldn’t move.
She listened.
Every word hurt.
Brett leaned back in his chair with a smug grin.
“I don’t know, boys.”
He raised his glass.
“I guess I’ve just got a way with women.”
The guys roared with approval.
Maddie’s hands tightened around the tray.
How had she become this person?
The girl who stayed.
The girl who tolerated everything.
The girl everyone pitied.
She looked down at the silver football keychain hanging from her car keys.
The one Cameron had given her.
Suddenly, memories flooded back.
Jack.
The orphanage.
The promise.
The boy who had protected her when nobody else would.
A painful ache settled in her chest.
“I don’t know how to leave him.”
The realization struck her unexpectedly.
It wasn’t because she loved Brett anymore.
Maybe she hadn’t for a long time.
It was because she was afraid.
Afraid of being alone again.
After the orphanage.
After the accident.
After losing Jack.
Part of her had spent years searching for that feeling of safety.
And somehow she’d convinced herself that Brett could replace it.
But he never had.
Because Brett wasn’t Jack.
Brett had never protected her.
Never valued her.
Never loved her.
The person she had been holding onto didn’t even exist anymore.
“I’m truly on my own now.”
The thought nearly brought tears to her eyes.
Then the front door opened.
A loud cheer erupted.
Veronica Steele had arrived.
The room instantly shifted.
Every eye turned toward her.
She wore a tight black dress and the confident smile of someone who always got exactly what she wanted.
Her gaze immediately found Brett.
And Brett’s reaction made Maddie’s stomach sink.
He smiled.
A real smile.
The kind he hadn’t given Maddie in months.
“I thought you weren’t coming.”
Veronica twirled a strand of blonde hair around her finger.
“I was getting pretty for you.”
Brett laughed.
“I like that.”
The intimacy between them felt like a knife twisting deeper.
Maddie couldn’t stay silent anymore.
She stepped forward.
The tray shook in her hands.
“How could you do this to me?”
The entire table went quiet.
Brett looked annoyed.
Not guilty.
Not ashamed.
Annoyed.
As if she were interrupting something important.
“Nice try.”
“What?”
Brett scoffed.
“I saw the way you were looking at Cameron Carter today.”
Maddie blinked.
“What does Cameron have to do with anything?”
Brett stood.
His expression cold.
“We’re done.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
Not because she wanted him back.
But because of how casually he said them.
Like years together meant nothing.
Then came the final insult.
“We’re done, slut.”
The entire bar fell silent.
Maddie’s face turned pale.
“Me?”
Her voice shook.
“You’re calling me that?”
She pointed between him and Veronica.
“What about you two?”
Veronica smirked.
Brett wrapped an arm around her waist.
Then he looked Maddie directly in the eyes.
The cruelty there was unmistakable.
“I’m a star quarterback.”
His voice dripped with arrogance.
“I’ve got an NFL future waiting for me.”
The players nodded eagerly.
“And Veronica?”
He pulled her closer.
“She’s more of a woman than you’ll ever be.”
The room erupted into laughter.
Veronica smiled triumphantly.
Several teammates raised their glasses.
But Maddie heard none of it.
Because something inside her had finally broken.
Not her heart.
That had shattered hours ago.
No.
This was something different.
This was the end of her fear.
The end of her excuses.
The end of pretending Brett Pierson was someone worth fighting for.
For the first time all night, Maddie looked at him and felt absolutely nothing.
And that terrified Brett far more than any tears ever could.
To be continued…
