The bar had gone completely silent.
For once, nobody was laughing.
Nobody was cheering.
Nobody was celebrating Brett Pierson.
Because everyone could see it now.
The perfect golden quarterback wasn’t so perfect after all.
Maddie stood motionless in the center of the room.
Brett’s arm was wrapped around Veronica.
His teammates surrounded him.
And yet, for the first time in years, she wasn’t afraid.
A strange calm settled over her.
Like the end of a storm.
Brett smirked.
“Come on, guys.”
He raised his beer.
“It’s all jokes.”
The football players laughed obediently.
Veronica giggled.
The performance continued.
But Maddie wasn’t watching them anymore.
She was watching her own life flash before her eyes.
Freshman year.
The orphan girl nobody noticed.
The lonely girl eating lunch by herself.
The girl convinced she didn’t deserve anything better.
Then Brett Pierson had spoken to her.
A single conversation.
A single smile.
And she had mistaken it for salvation.
“When Brett first talked to me…”
Maddie swallowed hard.
“I thought he was my knight in shining armor.”
The realization hurt.
Because she had spent years believing the fantasy.
Believing Brett had rescued her.
Believing he loved her.
Believing she owed him something.
But now she finally understood the truth.
“I wasn’t his princess.”
“I was his toy.”
A convenient toy.
A loyal toy.
A toy he could break whenever he wanted.
Then repair just enough to keep around.
Over and over again.
Until she forgot what respect looked like.
Until she forgot what love looked like.
Until she forgot who she was.
The realization hit with startling clarity.
And suddenly she was done.
Completely done.
Maddie looked Brett directly in the eyes.
“Screw you.”
The entire bar froze.
Brett blinked.
“What?”
“I’m done.”
No hesitation.
No tears.
No apology.
Just truth.
The words landed harder than a punch.
Veronica’s smile faltered.
Several teammates exchanged nervous glances.
Brett’s face darkened instantly.
His ego couldn’t handle rejection.
Especially not from Maddie.
“You fucking bitch.”
The room tensed.
Maddie didn’t flinch.
Brett took a threatening step forward.
“You’re done?”
His voice dripped with anger.
“Fine.”
He pointed at her.
“I want all your crap out of my apartment.”
Maddie’s eyebrows shot up.
“Your apartment?”
The nerve.
“I pay half the rent.”
Brett laughed.
A cold, ugly laugh.
“You think I give a shit?”
The cruelty in his eyes was unmistakable.
“When I get home tonight, I want all your stuff gone.”
The room fell silent again.
Nobody missed what he was really saying.
He wasn’t just breaking up with her.
He was making her homeless.
Again.
Brett leaned closer.
His voice dropped.
“So you can go back to being homeless.”
A pause.
“And being an orphan.”
The words landed like a slap.
Several people visibly winced.
Even some of Brett’s teammates looked uncomfortable.
But Brett only grinned.
Proud of himself.
Proud of the damage he’d caused.
He turned toward the crowd and spread his arms dramatically.
“Anybody want to defend little orphan Maddie?”
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The room suddenly became fascinated with their drinks.
Their phones.
The floor.
Anything except the girl being publicly humiliated.
Brett laughed.
“That’s what I thought.”
Veronica wrapped her arms around his neck.
Her eyes sparkled with admiration.
“God.”
She smiled.
“You’re so hot when you’re alpha.”
Brett smirked.
“Thanks, babe.”
The crowd forced awkward laughs.
Nobody wanted to challenge him.
Not the future football star.
Not the most popular guy in town.
Not Brett Pierson.
“Any takers?”
His voice echoed through the room.
Silence.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Then a chair scraped loudly against the floor.
Everyone turned.
A tall figure slowly stood.
The room instantly grew tense.
Because everyone recognized him.
Cameron Carter.
The Dragons quarterback.
The state champion.
The man who had already embarrassed Brett once tonight.
Cameron’s eyes never left Brett.
Cold.
Dangerous.
Protective.
The same look he’d worn years ago when another bully had threatened a little girl at the orphanage.
And suddenly, for the first time, Jack Harper seemed very much alive beneath the Cameron Carter everyone knew.
“I’ll stand up for her.”
The words cut through the room like a blade.
Every conversation stopped.
Every laugh died.
Brett stared in disbelief.
“What the fuck?”
Several players immediately backed away.
They could sense trouble coming.
Big trouble.
Cameron took another step forward.
His jaw tightened.
“You heard me.”
The room felt electric.
Like lightning was seconds away from striking.
Veronica’s confidence vanished.
Even Brett seemed unsure for the first time all night.
Because unlike everyone else…
Cameron wasn’t afraid of him.
Never had been.
Never would be.
And as Cameron moved toward Maddie, only one thought ran through his mind.
The same promise he’d made years ago.
The same promise he’d never forgotten.
“I’ll always protect you, Maddie.”
Brett had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
And everyone in the bar was about to find out why.
To be continued…
