True Heiress vs. Fake Queen Bee — Episode 14
Steam clouded the mirrors as the girls changed after dodgeball. Hailey rinsed the sweat from her skin, letting hot water ease the ache in her knee and shoulder. Beyond the shower curtain, lockers slammed and voices gradually faded. She allowed herself one quiet minute to enjoy the victory.
CeCe had gone to ask the nurse for ice, promising to return before the next bell. Most of Hailey’s teammates left together, still replaying their best moments from the game. Their excitement made the locker room feel lighter. Since arriving at Western High, Hailey had never felt less alone.
Candice waited until the room was nearly empty. She entered with Gail, spotted Hailey’s folded clothes beside the bench, and lifted them without making a sound. The gym uniform would not be enough for Hailey to attend class, especially once Candice removed that as well. Gail covered her mouth to suppress a laugh.
They carried everything across the corridor to the boys’ locker room. Candice selected a bench deep inside, where retrieving the clothes would require Hailey to walk past the showers. If someone photographed her there half dressed, the school would forget the dodgeball score by lunch. Candice arranged for several boys to remain behind.
Hailey shut off the water and reached for her towel. The bench outside was bare. She checked beneath it, then opened her locker and found only an empty hook. Her brief sense of peace vanished as she understood that the game had continued beyond the court.
She wrapped the towel securely and searched the room, hoping her clothes had been hidden in a childish prank. Nothing remained—not her shirt, pants, shoes, or gym uniform. Entering the hallway in a towel would violate school rules and give Candice exactly the spectacle she wanted. Hailey cursed herself for leaving the locker unsecured.
The door opened, and Hailey instinctively moved behind a bank of lockers. CeCe hurried inside carrying an ice pack, her expression alarmed. She said she had just seen Candice taking Hailey’s clothes into the boys’ locker room. The confirmation was both a relief and a warning.
“What?” Hailey asked, though she already knew why. Candice had not been satisfied with bruising CeCe or losing a game. She wanted to turn Hailey’s body into another object for public ridicule. Rage rose, but practical necessity came first.
CeCe offered to cover Hailey with an oversized gym towel and accompany her across the corridor. The next class had already begun, leaving the hallway mostly empty. If they moved quickly, Hailey could retrieve the clothes before a coach noticed. Waiting for help risked someone else discovering them first.
They slipped from the girls’ locker room together. CeCe walked ahead, checking both directions and shielding Hailey as much as her smaller frame allowed. Every sound made Hailey tighten her grip on the towel. The vulnerability was exactly what Candice had engineered.
At the boys’ locker-room door, CeCe listened with one ear pressed to the metal. No voices came from inside, and the gym beyond had gone quiet. She told Hailey no one seemed to be there. Still, neither girl trusted the silence.
CeCe volunteered to stand outside as lookout in case Coach Rivera or any students returned. Hailey thanked her, then pushed the door open only far enough to look inside. Rows of gray lockers stretched beneath harsh fluorescent lights. The air smelled of deodorant, damp towels, and the unmistakable remains of a trap.
Her clothes lay on a bench near the far wall. Candice had placed them in plain sight, too deep inside to reach from the doorway. Hailey hesitated, studying corners and partially open locker doors for a phone camera. She saw nothing.
“I’ll be right here,” CeCe whispered. The promise gave Hailey enough courage to enter. She moved quickly, bare feet silent against the tile, one hand holding the towel and the other ready to grab the clothes. Each step carried her farther from the exit.
Halfway across the room, she heard a faint scrape behind the shower partition. Hailey stopped and held her breath. The sound did not repeat. She told herself it was a dripping faucet or a loose locker settling.
Outside, CeCe paced beside the door. She watched the corridor toward the coach’s office and failed to notice Gail peering from around the opposite corner. Gail sent a quick message to Candice, confirming Hailey had entered. The trap was closing on schedule.
Hailey reached the bench and snatched up her clothes. Relief lasted less than a second. A low male voice murmured, “Dude, I don’t know,” from beyond the partition, answered by a stifled laugh. She was not alone.
She spun toward the door, but two boys stepped into view near the showers. Their surprise looked theatrical, as if they had been waiting for the exact moment she found them. Hailey tightened the towel and backed toward her clothes. The path to the exit now ran directly past them.
One boy grinned while the other looked uncertain. Hailey ordered them to move, keeping her voice steady despite the exposure prickling over her skin. Instead of obeying, the first boy leaned against a locker and let his gaze travel over her. The phone in his hand was already raised.
“Well, hello there,” he said. Laughter sounded from somewhere Hailey could not see, and the locker-room door shifted behind her. She had walked into Candice’s ambush exactly as planned. Before she could reach the exit, another figure emerged between her and the boys, and Hailey could not tell whether he had come to help or complete her humiliation.
