The courtyard remained silent after Hailey’s challenge.
For a brief moment, everyone waited to see what would happen next.
Would the mysterious rich girl expose the poor transfer student?
Would the transfer student apologize?
Would there be another fight?
Instead, Candice laughed.
A cold, dismissive laugh.
She slowly looked Hailey up and down as if inspecting something unpleasant.
Then she smirked.
“And who’s this?”
The crowd immediately leaned closer.
Candice tilted her head.
“The janitor’s unfortunate offspring?”
The students burst into laughter.
Even Gail nearly doubled over.
“Oh my God!”
“That’s brutal!”
“She’s not wrong!”
Hailey remained perfectly still.
The insults bounced off her like raindrops against glass.
Candice noticed.
Most people either cried or got angry when she humiliated them.
This girl did neither.
That irritated her.
“Ignore her,” Gail quickly said.
“She wouldn’t recognize luxury if it ran her over with a Rolls-Royce.”
More laughter.
The crowd eagerly joined in.
Everyone wanted to impress the new queen bee.
Everyone wanted a spot in her circle.
And the easiest way to do that was by attacking the outsider.
Hailey.
Candice crossed her arms and stepped closer.
Expensive perfume filled the air.
“Look at you.”
Her eyes scanned Hailey’s plain T-shirt and faded jeans.
“I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a potato sack like that.”
The surrounding girls immediately nodded.
“Seriously.”
“My cleaning lady dresses better.”
“Where does she even shop?”
“Probably clearance racks.”
The insults came nonstop.
But Hailey simply stared back.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Almost bored.
That expression bothered Candice more than any comeback ever could.
Suddenly—
RINGGGGG!
The school bell echoed across campus.
Students immediately groaned.
Class.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
Candice clicked her tongue.
“Saved by the bell, loser.”
She pointed a manicured finger at Hailey.
“Don’t worry.”
A smile spread across her face.
“I’ll catch you at recess.”
The threat was clear.
The crowd loved it.
Some students even laughed nervously.
Nobody wanted to be on Candice’s bad side.
Not if she was really a Kaplan.
Candice turned dramatically.
“Girls.”
Instantly, Gail and Tiffany straightened.
“Walk with me.”
“Of course!”
“Anything!”
The girls practically raced to her side.
Like loyal servants following a queen.
Candice enjoyed every second of it.
Power felt good.
Attention felt even better.
And for the first time in her life…
People were treating her like someone important.
Someone untouchable.
Someone powerful.
Someone rich.
She never wanted the feeling to end.
As the group began walking away, Candice suddenly stopped.
Without even looking back, she spoke.
“Oh, and…”
The crowd went silent again.
She glanced over her shoulder at Hailey.
“Make yourselves useful.”
The meaning was obvious.
The girls surrounding her immediately smirked.
Hailey had officially become a target.
And everyone knew it.
Yet surprisingly…
Hailey wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t scared.
If anything, she looked thoughtful.
As the crowd followed Candice toward the school building, Hailey remained standing alone in the courtyard.
The noise gradually faded.
Finally, she sighed.
I could expose her right now.
The thought crossed her mind again.
One phone call.
One text message.
One conversation with the principal.
That was all it would take.
The entire lie would collapse instantly.
Candice would be humiliated.
The students would discover the truth.
And Hailey Kaplan would reclaim her identity.
Simple.
Easy.
Immediate.
But then what?
Hailey already knew the answer.
The moment people learned she was the real Kaplan heiress, everything would change.
Again.
Students would suddenly want to be her friend.
Teachers would treat her differently.
Everyone would laugh at her jokes.
Everyone would invite her to parties.
Everyone would pretend to like her.
Not because of who she was.
Because of what she was.
A Kaplan.
The exact thing she had spent years trying to escape.
Hailey looked toward the school entrance where Candice had disappeared.
The fake heiress was probably already enjoying her new kingdom.
Surrounded by followers.
Surrounded by attention.
Surrounded by people desperate to use her.
The irony almost made Hailey laugh.
Candice thinks she’s winning.
But she has no idea what being a Kaplan actually means.
Being a Kaplan wasn’t luxury cars and designer clothes.
It wasn’t popularity.
It wasn’t power.
It was responsibility.
Pressure.
Expectations.
And secrets.
Lots of secrets.
A small smile appeared on Hailey’s face.
Fine.
You want to be Kaplan so badly?
Then be a Kaplan.
For now.
She slung her backpack over her shoulder.
Let’s see how long you can keep up the act.
Because lies always have expiration dates.
And when Candice’s lie finally exploded…
The fall would be spectacular.
Meanwhile, inside Western High, the fake queen bee was busy building her empire.
Completely unaware that the real queen had already decided to let her play the game.
For now.
To be continued…
