The classroom buzzed with excitement.
“Castle! Castle! Castle!”
The chant echoed from every corner.
Students were already imagining grand ballrooms, crystal chandeliers, private gardens, and luxury beyond anything they had ever seen.
A party at the Kaplan Castle.
It was the social event of the year.
And everyone wanted in.
Everyone except one person.
Candice Mathis.
Because while the crowd celebrated, she felt her entire world collapsing.
Her smile was becoming painful.
Every second that passed made it harder to maintain the illusion.
Miss Darci looked delighted.
“Well?”
The teacher folded her hands together.
“I’m sure your friends would love the opportunity.”
Friends.
The word almost made Candice laugh.
These people weren’t her friends.
They were opportunists.
The same type of people she used to hate.
The same type she had now become.
Candice forced herself to speak.
“Well…”
The room immediately quieted.
“The castle isn’t really open to the public.”
A few disappointed groans followed.
For a moment, Candice thought she might have escaped.
Then Miss Darci smiled.
A very unhelpful smile.
“These aren’t members of the public, Miss Kaplan.”
The teacher gestured toward the class.
“They’re your friends.”
The students nodded enthusiastically.
“Exactly!”
“We’d never tell anyone!”
“We’re basically family already!”
Candice nearly choked.
Family?
She didn’t even know half their names.
Miss Darci continued.
“I’m sure you’d love spending your birthday with your friends at the castle.”
The room erupted again.
“Please!”
“Come on, Candice!”
“It’ll be amazing!”
Every eye focused on her.
Waiting.
Expecting.
Demanding.
Candice knew she had no choice.
Not if she wanted to keep the lie alive.
Not if she wanted to remain Queen Bee.
“Fine.”
The classroom exploded into cheers.
Candice stood up dramatically.
“I’ll make a call and get everything ready for tonight.”
Students screamed with excitement.
Gail nearly fainted.
Tiffany was already planning social media posts.
Meanwhile, Hailey quietly lowered her gaze to hide her smile.
Because unlike everyone else…
She knew exactly how impossible that promise was.
The moment class ended, Candice rushed into an empty hallway.
Her confident expression vanished instantly.
Panic took its place.
She pulled out her phone.
Think.
Think.
Think.
There had to be a solution.
There had to be someone who could help.
Then one name came to mind.
Mom.
The call connected after a few rings.
“Candice, honey?”
A tired voice answered.
Background noises echoed through the phone.
Vacuum cleaners.
Running water.
Cleaning equipment.
“I’m working,” the woman said gently.
“What’s up?”
Candice rolled her eyes.
Even hearing those sounds embarrassed her.
“Mom…”
She lowered her voice.
“You’re at the Kaplan estate, right?”
There was a pause.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Candice glanced around to make sure nobody was listening.
Then she got straight to the point.
“I need you to find a way to let me into the castle tonight.”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
On the other end of the phone, Dedra Mathis froze.
She had spent nearly twenty years working for the Kaplan family.
She cleaned hallways.
Polished furniture.
Maintained guest rooms.
Worked long hours.
Everything she did was for one purpose.
To give her daughter opportunities she never had.
But this?
This was different.
Very different.
“What do you mean?” Dedra asked carefully.
Candice sighed impatiently.
“I’m throwing a party.”
The words came out as if they were obvious.
“And everyone expects it to be at the castle.”
Dedra nearly dropped her cleaning supplies.
“A party?”
“At the Kaplan estate?”
“Yes.”
Candice sounded annoyed.
“It’s not like they even use it all the time.”
Dedra felt a knot form in her stomach.
The Kaplan family had always been kind to them.
More kind than they needed to be.
When Candice received a scholarship recommendation, the Kaplans helped.
When tuition became difficult, they quietly assisted.
They never treated Dedra like she was beneath them.
Which was why this felt so wrong.
“What?”
Candice snapped.
“Don’t tell me no.”
Dedra closed her eyes.
“Candice…”
“I’m just a maid.”
The words hung heavily in the air.
A maid.
Not a manager.
Not an owner.
Certainly not someone with the authority to host a party.
“The Kaplans were generous enough to help with your tuition.”
Dedra’s voice softened.
“But I can’t just invite hundreds of students into their home.”
Candice immediately became furious.
“Seriously?”
“That’s your answer?”
Her voice rose.
“It’s already embarrassing enough having a cleaner as a mom.”
The words hit like a knife.
Dedra went silent.
Her heart sank.
But Candice wasn’t finished.
“I deserve this.”
“I deserve better than this.”
“I deserve to finally be somebody.”
For a moment, all Dedra could hear was her daughter’s breathing.
Heavy.
Desperate.
Determined.
Then something unexpected happened.
Dedra’s anger disappeared.
Because beneath the entitlement…
She heard fear.
Fear of losing everything she had built.
Fear of being exposed.
Fear of becoming invisible again.
Dedra looked down at her worn cleaning gloves.
Her daughter was wrong.
Painfully wrong.
But she was still her daughter.
And a mother’s heart rarely follows logic.
No matter how much it should.
“Please,” Candice whispered.
The single word carried more weight than everything else she had said.
Dedra sighed.
A long, defeated sigh.
“I’ll see what I can do.”
Immediately, Candice brightened.
“Really?”
“Thanks, Mommy.”
The sweetness in her voice returned instantly.
As if the cruel words from moments earlier had never happened.
Then the call ended.
Dedra slowly lowered her phone.
The empty hallway of the Kaplan estate suddenly felt much colder.
She stared out a nearby window at the magnificent castle grounds.
A place she had spent years maintaining.
A place that didn’t belong to her.
A place her daughter desperately wanted to claim.
Even if only for one night.
And for the first time…
Dedra wondered whether helping Candice would save her.
Or destroy her.
To be continued…
