The cafeteria at Western High was louder than ever.
Almost every table was occupied.
Students laughed, chatted, and exchanged gossip about one topic in particular.
Candice Kaplan.
Or at least, the girl everyone believed was Candice Kaplan.
At the center table, Candice sat like a queen holding court.
Gail and Tiffany occupied seats beside her while dozens of students competed for her attention.
Every joke she made was hilarious.
Every comment she gave was treated like wisdom.
Every smile she offered felt like a royal blessing.
It was exactly the kind of attention Candice had always dreamed of.
Across the cafeteria, Hailey grabbed a lunch tray and scanned the room.
She wasn’t expecting a warm welcome.
But even she was surprised by how obvious the exclusion had become.
The moment she approached one table, students suddenly remembered they were “saving seats.”
At another table, someone moved their backpack onto the empty chair.
A third table simply ignored her existence.
Hailey sighed.
Middle school behavior.
How original.
Balancing her tray, she continued searching for somewhere to sit.
The smell of spaghetti bolognese filled the air.
At least lunch looked decent.
As she passed Candice’s table, laughter suddenly erupted.
Something felt off.
A little too coordinated.
A little too rehearsed.
Hailey barely had time to react.
A leg shot out from beneath the table.
Directly into her path.
Her foot caught.
The tray tilted.
And the world flipped upside down.
Crash!
Plates shattered against the floor.
Spaghetti flew everywhere.
Students jumped back as food scattered across the cafeteria tiles.
Hailey hit the ground hard.
Pain shot through her knees.
One of them scraped against the floor.
Blood immediately appeared.
Red against pale skin.
Her T-shirt wasn’t much better.
Sauce covered the front.
Pasta clung to the fabric.
The entire cafeteria went silent.
For exactly one second.
Then the laughter started.
“Oh my God!”
“Did you see that?”
“That was hilarious!”
“She totally wiped out!”
Students laughed openly.
Some even pulled out their phones.
Meanwhile, Candice covered her mouth dramatically.
Pretending to be shocked.
Pretending to be innocent.
“Oh no.”
Candice stood up.
The fake concern in her voice was almost impressive.
“I’m so sorry.”
She pressed a hand against her chest.
“I didn’t see you there.”
The girls around her giggled.
Candice smiled sweetly.
“You just blended in with the losers so well.”
The entire table burst into laughter.
Hailey slowly pushed herself off the floor.
Her knees stung.
Her clothes were ruined.
And everyone was watching.
Waiting.
Hoping she’d cry.
Or run away.
Or give them the reaction they wanted.
Instead…
She calmly picked up a napkin.
“Ow.”
That was all she said.
One simple word.
No tears.
No tantrum.
No breakdown.
And somehow that disappointed everyone.
Especially Candice.
Candice folded her arms.
“What?”
“No dramatic exit?”
“No emotional speech?”
Hailey wiped sauce from her shirt.
Then she looked directly at Candice.
A slow smile appeared.
The kind of smile that usually meant trouble.
“You know, Candice…”
The cafeteria gradually quieted.
Everyone sensed something coming.
“For someone who claims to be so rich and powerful…”
Hailey tilted her head.
“You sure seem obsessed with me.”
A few students exchanged glances.
Candice’s smile faltered.
Slightly.
Only slightly.
“Obsessed?”
She laughed loudly.
“I think the word you’re looking for is disgusted.”
Her followers immediately nodded.
“Exactly!”
“She’s disgusting!”
Candice smirked confidently.
Problem solved.
Or so she thought.
“Really?”
Hailey asked.
“Because you keep coming after me.”
The cafeteria became even quieter.
Students began listening carefully.
“And honestly?”
Hailey shrugged.
“I just find it funny.”
Candice’s eyes narrowed.
Funny?
What was funny?
Hailey answered before she could ask.
“I find it funny that the so-called Kaplan heiress…”
Her gaze locked onto Candice.
“…feels threatened by a nobody like me.”
The words landed like a grenade.
Gasps echoed around the room.
Candice’s face darkened immediately.
“Threatened?”
She laughed.
A sharp, angry laugh.
“Don’t make me laugh.”
She stepped closer.
Someone at a nearby table whispered:
“Uh oh.”
Candice pointed at Hailey.
“Someone has to teach a troll like you how the world works.”
The room held its breath.
“Know your place, little peasant.”
For a second, silence followed.
Then Hailey laughed.
Actually laughed.
Not nervously.
Not awkwardly.
Genuinely.
The reaction confused everyone.
Including Candice.
“My place?”
Hailey repeated.
She stood up completely now.
Despite the blood on her knees.
Despite the sauce on her shirt.
Despite the humiliation.
She somehow looked stronger than before.
“And what’s your place, Candice?”
The fake heiress frowned.
“What?”
Hailey smiled.
“Because from where I’m standing…”
She paused.
The entire cafeteria leaned forward.
“It looks an awful lot like you’re auditioning for Mean Girls: Walmart Edition.”
For one glorious second…
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then—
Several students accidentally laughed.
Candice’s face turned crimson.
Humiliation.
Pure humiliation.
In front of everyone.
The queen bee had just been publicly mocked.
And the worst part?
The joke was funny.
“Oh.”
Candice’s voice trembled.
“Oh, you bitch.”
The cafeteria collectively winced.
Everyone knew what came next.
Before anyone could react, Hailey reached down and grabbed the nearest plate.
Still covered in spaghetti bolognese.
Candice’s eyes widened.
“No—”
Too late.
SPLAT!
Red sauce exploded across Candice’s face.
Pasta noodles dangled from her hair.
The cafeteria froze.
Completely.
Utterly.
Silently.
Frozen.
Candice stood there in shock.
Covered in spaghetti.
Looking less like a queen bee and more like a walking food disaster.
Several students stared with open mouths.
One phone dropped onto the floor.
Nobody could believe what they had just witnessed.
Hailey calmly set down the empty plate.
Then smiled.
“Oops.”
The exact same word Candice had used earlier.
The exact same mocking tone.
The exact same cruelty.
Returned with interest.
Candice finally found her voice.
“What the hell?!”
The scream echoed throughout the cafeteria.
Students jumped.
Teachers turned toward the noise.
And somewhere deep inside the school…
The war between the real heiress and the fake queen bee had officially begun.
To be continued…
