True Heiress vs. Fake Queen Bee — Episode 23
The biometric panel repeated its request for Hailey Kaplan, each syllable cutting through the stunned silence. Gail stared at Candice, waiting for the explanation that always came. This time, the fake heiress had none prepared. The castle itself appeared to be contradicting her.
Hailey placed two fingers against the scanner. Green light moved beneath her hand, and the lock disengaged with a quiet click. Several guests gasped as the private doors opened. CeCe watched Candice’s face drain of color.
“Systems can be hacked,” Candice said. She accused Hailey of manipulating the panel after learning the housekeeper’s access code. The claim made little sense, but it offered frightened followers somewhere to place their disbelief. Gail immediately repeated that Hailey must have planned the trick.
Hailey could have led everyone through the family wing and shown them rooms filled with her life. Instead, she closed the doors again. Her mother’s bedroom, Frank’s study, and the photographs lining those halls were not exhibits for classmates hungry for scandal. Proving a point did not require surrendering every boundary.
Candice mistook the restraint for weakness. She announced that Hailey had closed the door because she knew stepping inside would trigger an alarm. A few students nodded, though uncertainty remained in their faces. Luke asked why the system had accepted Hailey’s fingerprints if she were an intruder.
Dedra moved forward before Candice invented another answer. She claimed Hailey’s print had been registered earlier that evening as part of the temporary guest access. The lie protected her daughter but directly betrayed the girl who had trusted her. Hailey met Dedra’s eyes and saw the apology she could not speak.
Candice recovered enough to laugh. She thanked Dedra for clearing up the confusion and accused Hailey of exploiting a technicality to seek attention. Gail called the stunt pathetic. The crowd relaxed because accepting a simple deception was easier than admitting they had worshiped the wrong girl all day.
Hailey told Dedra quietly that temporary codes could not register biometric data. The maid lowered her gaze. She knew the security manager and Luke had heard, but Candice rushed the group back toward the ballroom before either could pursue the point. Music resumed at an uncomfortable volume.
The party fragmented into clusters of speculation. Some students insisted Candice was genuine, while others replayed Hailey’s piano performance and the scanner’s announcement. Every inconsistency that had once seemed harmless now fitted a different story. Candice’s castle triumph was becoming a public trial.
Luke found Hailey near the terrace. He said he believed her, not because of the piano or the door but because Candice had behaved like an impostor from the moment she arrived. Hailey warned that standing with her could make him Candice’s next target. Luke replied that he had never been afraid of a fake crown.
His support brought warmth into a night dominated by betrayal. Hailey thanked him and finally admitted that the castle was her home. Luke accepted the truth without amazement or a sudden change in posture. He only asked why she had tolerated so much at school.
Hailey explained that she wanted one relationship untouched by the Kaplan fortune. Luke glanced toward CeCe and said she appeared to have found at least one. Then he added that perhaps she had found two. The quiet promise between them was interrupted by a crash from the service corridor.
McKenna had wandered away from the ballroom while searching for a private place to take photographs. She opened an unmarked door and knocked a covered frame against a storage cabinet. The crash drew Gail, Candice, and several guests before Dedra could stop them.
The protective cloth slid partly to the floor, revealing the lower half of an ornate family portrait. Hailey recognized her mother’s gown and Frank’s hand resting against the frame. Candice lunged to cover it again, claiming the painting was being restored. Her urgency made everyone more curious.
McKenna pulled the cloth away. The full portrait showed a younger Hailey standing between Frank and Evelyn Kaplan beneath the same ballroom chandelier visible through the open corridor. Her face was unmistakable. Time had changed her hair and softened childhood features, but not enough to erase the resemblance.
Gail looked from the painted child to the girl standing beside Luke. The room seemed to tilt beneath her certainty. She asked Candice why another student appeared in a Kaplan family portrait. No explanation about hacking or guest access could alter oil paint that had aged for years.
Candice claimed the child was a distant cousin. Hailey replied that the woman in the portrait was her mother, and the watch on Candice’s wrist had belonged to her. She crossed the room and demanded it back. For once, no one laughed at the claim.
Dedra stepped between them, pleading for calm. Candice used the interruption to accuse Hailey of orchestrating every discovery, from the portrait to the scanner. She said an obsessed stalker could fabricate images and manipulate servants. Desperation had replaced elegance in her voice.
Then Candice noticed a diamond bracelet displayed inside the adjoining reception room. An idea entered her expression as she looked from the jewelry to Hailey’s evening bag. If proof made Candice look like a fraud, she needed evidence that made the real heiress look like a criminal. She whispered instructions to Gail while the crowd argued over the portrait.
Hailey reached again for her mother’s Cartier, but a piercing alarm sounded from the jewelry cabinet. Guests turned as Candice cried out that one of the Kaplan diamonds was missing. Security doors sealed the ballroom, and Gail pointed directly at Hailey’s bag.
