Falling for My Ex’s Mafia Dad – Chapter 7
The hallway fell silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Dean stood frozen beneath Kent Lippert’s gaze.
For the first time since Fay had met him, the arrogant nightclub owner looked genuinely terrified.
As he should be.
Kent wasn’t raising his voice.
He wasn’t shouting.
He wasn’t making threats.
And somehow that made him infinitely more dangerous.
Dean swallowed hard.
“Wait… but…”
His eyes darted between Fay and Kent.
Confusion mixed with panic.
“Your girl?”
The words had barely left his mouth when Kent’s expression darkened.
The Mafia King’s patience evaporated instantly.
“Boss, I—”
Dean never finished.
Kent took one step forward.
Just one.
Yet it was enough to send Dean stumbling backward.
“If you ever try something like that again,” Kent said quietly, “with any woman…”
His voice remained calm.
Almost conversational.
Which somehow made the threat even worse.
“I’ll feed your balls to my dogs.”
The guard immediately looked away.
Dean visibly paled.
Fay wasn’t entirely sure he was breathing anymore.
“Are we clear?”
“Y-yes.”
Kent’s stare intensified.
Dean nearly collapsed.
“Yes, sir.”
The silence stretched.
Then Kent pointed toward the exit.
“Now crawl out of here.”
Dean blinked.
“What?”
Kent’s expression didn’t change.
“Before I gut you.”
A second later, Dean was moving.
Fast.
Humiliatingly fast.
The powerful nightclub owner practically tripped over himself trying to escape.
Neither Kent nor Fay watched him leave.
The moment the hallway door slammed shut, a different kind of tension settled between them.
One that somehow felt even more dangerous.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Kent sighed.
A genuine sigh.
As if she had somehow become his newest headache.
“Doc.”
The nickname instantly sent a strange flutter through her stomach.
Kent shook his head.
“I told you I’d see you on the outside.”
His dark eyes swept across the nightclub.
The hallway.
The questionable crowd.
The security staff.
Clearly disapproving.
“I didn’t mean here.”
Fay crossed her arms.
Defensive.
Embarrassed.
Annoyed.
Mostly because part of her knew he had a point.
“I was looking for my sister.”
“You should have called the police.”
She almost laughed.
“The police?”
Kent raised an eyebrow.
“Fair point.”
Despite herself, Fay smiled.
Only for a second.
But Kent noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He seemed to notice everything.
The realization made her nervous.
Very nervous.
His gaze softened slightly.
“What is a girl like you doing in a place like this?”
The question sounded simple.
Yet something deeper lingered beneath it.
Concern.
Real concern.
Fay wasn’t sure what to do with that.
Especially coming from a man like Kent Lippert.
The feared Mafia King.
The criminal she’d been assigned to evaluate.
The man she absolutely should not be attracted to.
Unfortunately, her heart appeared unwilling to cooperate.
“I’m an adult.”
The answer sounded weaker than intended.
Kent gave her a look.
The kind adults gave children who had just said something ridiculous.
“You almost got yourself hurt.”
“I’m fine.”
“You were lucky.”
The correction came immediately.
And annoyingly.
Because he wasn’t wrong.
Again.
Fay hated when he wasn’t wrong.
The silence returned.
This time it felt different.
Closer.
More intimate.
The distance between them seemed to shrink.
Or maybe that was just her imagination.
Kent’s gaze dropped briefly.
To her mouth.
Then returned to her eyes.
The movement lasted less than a second.
Yet somehow Fay noticed.
And suddenly became very aware of everything.
The warmth in her cheeks.
The rapid beat of her heart.
The way Kent was looking at her.
Without thinking, she bit her lower lip.
A nervous habit.
One she’d had for years.
The effect was immediate.
Kent went completely still.
Dangerously still.
The kind of stillness predators displayed before moving.
Fay’s pulse accelerated.
Something had changed.
The air itself felt heavier.
Charged.
Electric.
“Mr. Lippert?”
His eyes narrowed.
Not angrily.
Something else.
Something that made her stomach flip.
“Don’t do that.”
Her breath caught.
“Do what?”
Kent took a slow step closer.
Close enough that she could smell his cologne.
Wood.
Leather.
Something distinctly masculine.
Far too distracting.
“You know exactly what you’re doing.”
The accusation left her speechless.
Because she genuinely didn’t.
Or at least…
she wasn’t sure she did.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
A dangerous smile appeared.
The same smile she’d seen inside the prison.
The one that usually meant trouble.
“You’re either incredibly innocent…”
His gaze lingered on her face.
“Or incredibly brave.”
Fay swallowed.
Neither answer felt safe.
Especially not with Kent looking at her like that.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Neither of them spoke.
And for reasons she couldn’t explain, Fay suddenly found herself wondering something she absolutely shouldn’t.
What would happen if she stopped fighting this attraction?
The thought terrified her.
Because deep down…
she wasn’t sure she wanted the answer.
To be continued…
