True Heiress vs. Fake Queen Bee — Episode 08

Hailey stopped in the center aisle and stared at the man behind the podium. He was not Principal Adams. She searched the edge of the stage, expecting Adams to appear with a bandage or a late apology, but only unfamiliar staff members waited there. Around her, students pressed into seats, too excited to notice her alarm.

Candice entered moments later with Gail and her entourage, the stolen Cartier displayed prominently on her wrist. When she saw the substitute at the podium, relief softened her face. She did not know why Principal Adams was absent, only that the man who might recognize Hailey had failed to appear. Fortune had opened another door just as the lie threatened to close.

The interim administrator welcomed everyone and began with routine announcements. He reminded students to register for the upcoming talent show, prompting scattered groans and cheers. Hailey barely heard him. Her attention remained fixed on the empty chair bearing Principal Adams’s name.

At last, the administrator reached the purpose of the assembly. He praised the Kaplan family’s generosity and invited the heiress, Miss Hailey Kaplan, to join him onstage. The use of her real name sent a shock through Hailey. She stepped toward the aisle at the same moment Candice rose from her seat.

“Coming,” Candice called brightly. Gail helped clear a path, shoving Hailey aside before she could reach the stage. The administrator glanced between the two girls for only a second. He had never met the heiress, but one wore expensive clothes and the famous family watch while the other looked like a student from the lost-and-found box.

His choice appeared obvious to him. Hailey watched Candice climb the stairs and accept the applause meant for her. The theft felt more intimate in the auditorium, surrounded by banners carrying her family’s name. Candice was no longer exploiting a rumor among teenagers; she was representing Frank Kaplan before the entire school.

The administrator welcomed “Miss Kaplan” and commented on the heirloom watch. Hailey’s fingers closed around the bare skin of her wrist. That single stolen object had become confirmation because no one bothered to ask how Candice obtained it. Evidence mattered less than the story people already preferred.

Candice reached the microphone and thanked the administrator with polished confidence. She declared herself honored to attend on behalf of her father. The word struck Hailey like a second slap. Candice could borrow clothes, a surname, and even a house for one night, but she had no right to claim Frank as her father.

“Daddy always taught me to give to the less fortunate,” Candice continued. Her gaze swept across the students with benevolent superiority before settling briefly on Hailey. The speech converted the Kaplan family’s genuine philanthropy into another tool for humiliation. Students applauded, delighted by the gracious heiress in front of them.

Hailey forced herself to remain still. Exposing Candice without Principal Adams would now require facts the crowd could verify immediately. A phone call to Frank might work, but the administrator could dismiss it as staged. Identification could be called fake just as the watch had been. Candice had taught everyone to interpret truth as jealousy.

When the applause faded, Hailey raised her voice and asked where Principal Adams was. The question interrupted the administrator’s praise, and irritation crossed his face. He explained that Adams had been hit by a school bus that morning. Though expected to recover, the principal would remain on leave for the rest of the school year.

Disbelief moved through Hailey. The timing was so absurd it might have seemed invented, yet murmurs from the staff confirmed the accident. Her strongest witness had vanished before the assembly began. Onstage, Candice concealed a smile behind a concerned expression.

The administrator attempted to return the program to its conclusion, but Hailey refused to let the opportunity disappear. If Candice truly represented Frank, she should know why the family had donated and what the contribution funded. Hailey remembered every conversation because she had helped select the program herself. The question required knowledge no costume could supply.

She stood and addressed Candice directly. “What exactly did your daddy donate?” she asked, emphasizing the stolen intimacy of the word. “How much, and for what specifically?” The auditorium quieted as hundreds of students waited for an answer.

Candice’s fingers tightened around the microphone. Dedra had mentioned the donation only in passing, and public gossip supplied no exact amount. Candice could invent a number, but the administrator might know it was wrong. Her confidence visibly faltered beneath the stage lights.

Gail glared at Hailey from the front row and whispered that she was ruining everything. Other students turned with expressions ranging from annoyance to curiosity. Hailey ignored them. She watched Candice search for a new lie and felt the balance shift by a fraction.

The interim administrator stepped toward the microphone, ready to protect the school’s relationship with its largest donor. His posture made clear that he viewed Hailey’s question not as a search for truth but as an attack on money he feared losing. Candice saw the rescue approaching and recovered enough to look offended.

Hailey understood the danger. By challenging Candice publicly, she had threatened the school’s funding, and the administrator might punish the easier target rather than investigate the claim. Yet remaining silent would allow Candice’s theft to become official. There was no longer a safe way back to anonymity.

Candice lifted her chin. “That’s private information,” she said, turning ignorance into a boundary Hailey had supposedly violated. A few students nodded, accepting the evasion. Hailey stared at the watch on Candice’s wrist and knew polite questions would never be enough.

She stepped into the aisle, prepared to expose every contradiction she could. The administrator raised a hand to silence her, anger building in his face. Candice stood beneath the Kaplan banner wearing Hailey’s heirloom and her father’s name, protected by an institution desperate for money. Hailey had come to the assembly expecting recognition; instead, she was about to be punished for telling the truth.
