True Heiress vs. Fake Queen Bee — Episode 9
“Excuse me?” Candice asked from the stage, wrapping offense around the fear in her voice. Hailey repeated the question without lowering her gaze. If Candice’s father had donated millions to Western High, surely his daughter could identify the purpose. The answer should have been effortless for the girl everyone had welcomed as a benefactor.
Candice declared the information private and added that someone like Hailey could not understand how philanthropy worked. The insult redirected attention from the missing answer to the supposed impropriety of asking. Several students laughed, relieved to return to a simpler story in which Candice was generous and Hailey merely jealous. Hailey remained standing.
“Or maybe you’re just a liar,” she said. The word traveled through the silent auditorium and struck the stage harder than a shout. Candice’s face tightened. The interim administrator reached the microphone before she could respond.
He demanded to know how Hailey dared create a scene in front of the Kaplan heiress. Her family, he reminded everyone, had donated millions to the school, and he would not permit an ungrateful student to jeopardize that support. His concern was nakedly financial. Investigating the truth mattered less than keeping the person he believed controlled the money pleased.
Hailey insisted she had not bullied anyone. She had asked two factual questions, neither of which Candice could answer. The administrator ignored the distinction and accused her of targeting a fellow student. If she acted out once more, he threatened, he would make certain she was expelled.
The threat changed the calculation. Hailey had tolerated insults to preserve her anonymity, but Candice was now using that silence to take away her education. Every concession had encouraged a more dangerous abuse: first a name, then her mother’s watch, her father’s reputation, and now the power to remove Hailey from school. The experiment had reached its limit.
The administrator ordered her to apologize to Miss Kaplan. Around Hailey, students waited eagerly for surrender. Gail smiled from the front row, already savoring the sight of the poor outcast kneeling before the girl she had elevated. Onstage, Candice wore the expression of a monarch granting mercy.
Hailey looked up at the banner bearing her surname. She remembered telling Frank she wanted real friends and could manage public school without his protection. Admitting the truth now felt like failure, but allowing Candice to destroy her in the name of independence would be worse. Privacy had become a weapon in someone else’s hands.
“This has gone too far,” Hailey said to herself. Her voice was soft, yet the resolve behind it steadied her breathing. She stepped out of the row and moved closer to the stage. Candice’s satisfied smile began to fade.
Hailey explained that the girl beside the microphone was not Miss Kaplan. The administrator tried to interrupt, but she spoke over him, no longer asking permission to reclaim her life. Candice gripped the podium, the stolen Cartier bright beneath the stage lights.
“Because I am Hailey Kaplan.” The declaration settled over the auditorium in stunned silence. For one moment, no one laughed. Students stared between the two girls, comparing the glamorous figure onstage with the bruised, plainly dressed girl in the aisle.
Candice recovered first. She let out a disbelieving laugh and asked whether Hailey expected anyone to accept such an obvious fantasy. Gail joined in too loudly, insisting the loser had finally gone insane. Their mockery gave the rest of the room permission to dismiss the claim before examining it.
The administrator looked Hailey up and down. His gaze lingered on the borrowed shirt, scuffed sneakers, and injured knee. Everything he saw contradicted his idea of a billionaire’s daughter. He never considered that a wealthy girl might choose ordinary clothes; appearance had already become his only evidence.
Hailey told him she could prove her identity. She had identification, family contacts, photographs, and knowledge of the donation. Principal Adams would verify everything once he recovered. She only needed the administrator to listen for sixty seconds instead of protecting a conclusion he had reached from an outfit.
Candice sensed the danger in allowing evidence. She clutched the watch and claimed Hailey had been stalking her since morning, copying her story and trying to steal her belongings. Gail eagerly described the hallway confrontation in reverse. Within seconds, the actual theft had become proof against its victim.
Hailey’s anger sharpened into disbelief. She pointed at the Cartier and said it belonged to her late mother, but Candice displayed it as confirmation that she was the authentic heiress. The administrator saw only an expensive heirloom on the richly dressed girl. He ordered Hailey to stop making ridiculous accusations.
A ripple of laughter moved through the auditorium. This time the sound hurt because Hailey had surrendered the secret she valued and received nothing in return. She had expected the truth to carry its own authority. Instead, the lie had gathered enough followers to shout it down.
Still, she refused to apologize. She repeated her name and told Candice that wearing stolen property did not change who either of them was. Candice’s eyes flashed with hatred, but the administrator stepped between them. His protection allowed her to maintain the wounded expression of an innocent target.
The assembly dissolved into excited whispers as staff directed students toward the exits. Hailey remained beside the stage, waiting for someone in authority to ask a real question. No one did. The administrator approached with an expression that promised discipline rather than investigation.
Candice descended the steps surrounded by friends and paused just long enough to meet Hailey’s eyes. Victory made her reckless, yet fear still lived beneath it; she now knew the real heiress had abandoned silence. As the administrator demanded an explanation for Hailey’s “delusion,” Candice walked away wearing the stolen watch, and Hailey realized telling the truth had only made the coming war more dangerous.
